  1. I'm going with the Brewers. Milwaukee is playoff-starved and they have a good young team. I want the Cubs to be playing next season as the 100th anniversary of their last championship. Screw the Cards.
  2. Fantastic win!!!
  3. You really have to feel sorry for Pirates fans. With all that history, and possibly the best ballpark in the majors, they've had to settle for one of the most consistently bad teams of the past 10 years and an owner who won't spend money on talented players.
  4. Oh, now I see - this is connected to the Rodney Harrison thing. Ok, that makes it much worse, in terms of how you judge him as a person. Still, I give him credit for all the years he spent trying to come back. Many people simply would've given up after totally flaming out like he did. It takes guts to to try something different, knowing it could take years, to make it back.
  5. Show me evidence that he's used it this year. Back then, technically he wasn't breaking any rules. It kinda leaves a smudge on the comeback story for me, but it's still a pretty good feel-good story in my mind. Stuff that happened three years ago really doesn't ruin it for me.
  6. Whoa whoa whoa, hold on there! If this is because you think I made up the nickname "The Barbarian", you're wrong. Conine himself uses it, as evidenced by his personal website: Jeff Conine's page on his restaurant's website
  7. 19 as the Braves score 7 runs in the last two innings to beat the Phillies 9-8.
  8. Collazo - 1.5 Beltran - 1.25 Castillo - .75 Wright - .5 DiFelice - .5 Humber - .5
  9. The Barbarian really needs to step it up here. Green's been decent lately. We haven't seen much of Marlon recently, though. OE: Removed a "though" at the end of the second sentence. Oops. Totally zonked out writing this post, didn't notice it.
  10. Awwww Endy... you gotta come up big in these situations!
  11. Maine could really use some rest.
  12. C'mon, Mets! Don't let the opposing pitcher's feel-good story intimidate you! Send him back to the grounds crew!
  13. It's about damn time we won 5 in a row!!!
  14. DOOKIE!!!!!! Lo Duca fucked up the inning.
  15. I've never understood why the Hall of Fame game didn't count for anything. Making it an official game would indeed be pretty cool. I think the Hall ought to possibly double in size - there are plenty of baseball artifacts that can't be seen because the Hall is physically too small. There also should be larger exhibits for each team. An outdoor exhibit where you can play baseball using 1880s rules a la Jim Bouton's league (though in the interest of safety, maybe with modern gloves) would kick ass.

  17. One of the many problems I have with Hall of Fame voting is its treatment of non-players when it comes to enshrinement, particularly managers, umpires, executives, and the like. Who do you think deserves enshrinement in this category? What active managers do you think will end up in the Hall of Fame? Tony La Russa, Bobby Cox, and Joe Torre are locks, I think, and Lou Piniella has a shot if he gets a few more good seasons in.
  18. Here's to hoping we cruise through September with Wright keying the offense, the Phillies go into a tailspin, Utley goes into a month-long slump, and Utley, Rollins, and Howard split the Phillies vote. Then I think David Wright wins the MVP. But September is usually the most important month for the MVP and other end-of-year awards (see Piazza, Mike) and players usually win or lose the award during the final month.
  19. On a team with great speed, it wouldn't be good if we wound up with a Jason Phillips-esque slowpoke though.

    Canada

Fuck the Yankees. Brooklyn's our territory, we can do what we want. As for the state of Canadian baseball, the Blue Jays seriously ought to make a conscious effort to reinvigorate it. Trade for Jason Bay, go get Eric Gagne. Pick up as many Canadian players as they can and move their minor league teams north.
  21. I'm glad we have at least one good catching prospect. Encouraging number: 2 triples. If he has decent speed, I'm excited.
  22. If, heaven forbid, the Cardinals make the playoffs, Pujols could end up getting it. However, if David hits 4 more homers, keeps his batting average above .315, winds up with over 100 RBI and 100 runs scored, it looks like it's between him, Prince Fielder, and Matt Holliday. It all depends on which player and which team has the best September. If the Brewers don't make the playoffs, it seriously weighs against Fielder. Some voters might be put off by Holliday's Coors Field-inflated numbers. That leaves it up to Wright to separate himself from his teammates. If that happens, he has a fantastic shot at it.
  23. If we go on a big win streak and he puts up big numbers through the month, he has a shot. Right now, he's in the mix, certainly, but I don't think he's established himself as #1.
  24. We won! Good! I was out all day, last I knew what was going on we were up 3-1.
  25. I know they are. I'm talking about next season. Hopefully he performs well enough that he slots out someone like Sele when we come back next year.
