  1. I like it... as a Mets fan. He's a CF who doesn't hit for power or steal bases. Aside from his glove he's not much of an all-around player. Hot wife though.
  2. IMHO this deal is 100% about Rolen and LaRussa butting heads. Otherwise they are a wash, with Glaus having more power and Rolen a better glove.

Whiffed D'Angelo Jiminez and got Nook Logan in a DP. Then he threw a scoreless 7th. The very next night he gave up the final 3 runs in the 'lets-waste-Marlon-Anderson's-clutch-3-run-double/where-the-hell-is-Wagner game. Sadly, I don't much recall the Nationals game... yet I remember the Marlins game the next night with brilliant clarity.
  4. ="seawolf17"] Mama mia! (For what it's worth, I don't know that Donkey Kong is your traditional shortstop, but he probably has pretty good range. I do like Koopa on the mound, in the finest Wellsesque tradition.) I got confused, thought that Koopa was in fact Roger Clemens.
  5. I've got some real nice feelings about this entire process. His uppance has come, finally.

  7. ="smg58"]I think Pagan will give the Mets the luxury of having somebody other than Carlos Gomez to call up in case of an injury. I don't see him being much more than that. So it certainly doesn't hurt, but it might not help all that much. He's the new Ben Johnson... only maybe this guy can contribute something.
  8. Benjamin Grimm wrote: So far this has been the easiest offseason ever for me. Last year ended with such a bad taste in my mouth, and nothing has happened this winter to whet my appetite for the new season. So no, I'm not jonesing yet. Maybe by the end of January I will be. I might actually be in Florida this March, with a chance to see the Mets play in St. Lucie or in Fort Myers. That would be a nice way to shorten the offseason a bit. I'd say the opposite. The Jets have left me craving something to watch with hope. Well, at least Syracuse starts its conference schedule this week. That will help a little.

  10. Edgy DC wrote: No. The ex-Met, for what it's worth, didn't set the record with the Mets. Was it Shaw(o)n Dunston? I seem to recall he rarely took a BB in his playing days.

  12. The insanity continues... Mariners agree to terms with Silva on $48 million, 4-year contract By GREGG BELL, AP Sports Writer December 20, 2007 SEATTLE (AP) -- Pitcher Carlos Silva and the Seattle Mariners finalized a $48 million, four-year contract Thursday. The 28-year-old right-hander was 13-14 last season for the Minnesota Twins with a 4.19 ERA -- better than every Mariners starter other than hard-throwing Felix Hernandez. Seattle likes that Silva pitches deep into games, generally stays low in the strike zone with a sharp sinker and walked just 36 batters in 202 innings last season. He joins a Seattle rotation that includes Hernandez, Miguel Batista and Jarrod Washburn. "We feel that signing Carlos addresses one of our main needs, adding a quality arm to the starting rotation," general manager Bill Bavasi said. "Our goal heading into the offseason was to identify the best available pitcher on the free agent market and we feel we got the best one."
  13. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Just arguing here, but that "mediocre arm" produces a fine 2:1 K:BB ratio, though not all that many K's or BB's; and he's still relatively young and never really employed in a "pitcher's park." Unsexy though it may be, 150+ innings of reliable mediocrity -- which is what Lohse is all about (plus a small upside) -- is a good thing to have at the back-end of your rotation, and/or to fill in as needs arise further up the chain, and they will. Unless he gets Kevin Appier's contract to come here. Then it's a colossal fuck-up. I have to believe that 180 innings of Humber/Pelfrey/retread-C/etc. can put up comparable numbers without the idiotic salary.

  15. The denial is now official. Highly enjoyable reading. Clemens fires back, denies taking steroids or HGH Associated Press NEW YORK -- Roger Clemens denied allegations by his former trainer that he took performance-enhancing drugs, calling them "a dangerous and destructive shortcut that no athlete should ever take.'' The accusations against the seven-time Cy Young Award winner from his former trainer, Brian McNamee, were contained in last week's Mitchell report. Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell said McNamee said he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998 while with the Toronto Blue Jays, and steroids and human growth hormone in 2000 and 2001, while with the New York Yankees. "I want to state clearly and without qualification: I did not take steroids, human growth hormone or any other banned substances at any time in my baseball career or, in fact, my entire life,'' Clemens said Tuesday in a statement issued through his agent, Randy Hendricks. "Those substances represent a dangerous and destructive shortcut that no athlete should ever take. "I am disappointed that my 25 years in public life have apparently not earned me the benefit of the doubt, but I understand that Senator Mitchell's report has raised many serious questions. I plan to publicly answer all of those questions at the appropriate time in the appropriate way. I only ask that in the meantime people not rush to judgment.'' Another McNamee client, Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte, said last weekend that he took HGH twice while rehabbing from an injury in 2002. Mitchell said McNamee told him he injected Pettitte with HGH two-to-four times that year. Baseball players and owners didn't have an agreement banning steroids until September 2002. They banned HGH in January 2005.
  16. As per Metsblog.com... The Mets have signed free-agent RHP Matt Wise to a one-year contract. Wise, 32, was 3-2 with one save and a 4.19 ERA in a career-high 56 games last year for the Brewers. Mets GM Omar Minaya, on Wise Matt has had success in a variety of roles. He adds a versatile arm to the bullpen. Since 2005, Wise has posted a 3.27 ERA against the NL East.
  17. Fifty years from now, when they're all wearing their quasi-futuristic Mercury Mets uniforms, you will all miss the black hats and jerseys. Trust me!
  18. According to the St. Petersburg Times, Jae Seo has signed a 1.5 million dollar deal to return to pitching in his native S. Korea.
  19. Real nervey of a team that performs the biggest September choke job in the history of baseball to then jack up the prices. Good stuff. I'll be enjoying all but 1 or 2 these games from home on SNY and XM, thanks.
  20. I always assumed that it was Jeet that was getting male hormones injected forcefully into his rear end.

  22. Otsuka is the name that jumped out at me. He had great relief numbers the last few years and I recall some trade rumors about him and the Mets last year at the deadline. Career ERA/WHIP of 2.44/1.16. He is coming off of an injury however.
  23. He should go home and get his fucking shine box (I know, right movie, wrong character). I guess Marco Scutaro was unavailable for this role.

No. Three hitters (Johnson, Crosby and Schneider) who hit under .240 last year. Add Castillo's aversion to doubles, triples and HRs and an aging Delgado and you're looking at one weak-ass lineup. Even Omar I think would see it as folly.
