  1. How so Irish?
  2. Sorry for the techno-SNAFU-- I think there are two real tragedies here-- the obvious murder of a young father, and the fact that someone who was obviously ill did not receive the treatment they so desperately needed. A state appeals court on Thursday upheld the murder conviction of an uncle to country singer Tim McGraw for killing a Vallejo neighbor. Dennis McGraw, 47, who also is the brother of onetime New York Mets baseball star Tug McGraw, was sentenced to life in prison for killing neighbor Jason Garfield, 31, on July 13, 2002. Garfield was shot three times outside 522 El Dorado St. Vallejo police officer Les Bottomley saw McGraw fire into Garfield's body as he lay on the street and arrested McGraw after a violent struggle, police said. Justice Lawrence Stevens rejected a number of procedural issues raised by McGraw, saying there was "no question" that McGraw was the shooter. 3. Sorry to have upset the forum on Thanksgiving: It was his brother Dennis: The incident occured on 13 July 2002-- sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/...&type=printable
  4. Was there any mention of Tug's brother? He's recently been convicted of first-degree murder, having gunned down his neighbor in front of my office mate, his wife and their two darling daughters. Tough times for the McGraw family (Tim excluded)...
  5. Cubs ink Bobby Howry for 3 years/$12 Million
  6. My off-season scorecard has the Phils and Mets leading Bosox, Pale Hose and Fish (in that order).
  7. Interesting, Val...A's management always makes noise about relocating within the gretaer bay Area: the Giants would block a move to San Jose, but Sacto (home of Athletics top affiliate) is rarely mentioned-- since it has a larger population, maybe it should be... I recall the A's playing some pre-season games in Vegas,a nd the rumors of htier impending move to the Desert-- I think the gambling stigma is too much for MLB to overcome, as Edgy mentioned earlier.
  8. Casey Stengel yields a few intersting ones: Essay Neglect Let Gay Scenes And many more..........
  9. or, ....A Nerd Pole OK
  10. Ed Kranepool= A Poked Loner
  11. Doc Gooden= De Coon God
  12. Darryl Strawberry= BARRED STARR WRYLY
  13. so what happens to Jose Vidro and Junior Spivey??-- looks like the Nats have corenerd the market on 2b-men...
  14. Scott Eyre: 2 years $11 Million http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2227664
  15. I'm not sure I buy this "he's a good enough hitter to play position X but not position Y" theory. i remember a few years ago, the Bucs were considering moving Jason Kendall to LF-- there was alot of backlash about how this wasn't a good idea-- about how it was OK to have a singles hitting $10 million catcher, but not a singles-hitting $10 million LF and I just didn't get it... I also recall Bobby V stating he wouldn't move Piazza to 1b since he'd then have to find a Catcher who could replicate Mike's offensive production (but what you really needed was one who could replace the power of the now-benched 1b-men, right?) Am I missing something here? (I know I ain't adding anything...)
  16. I heard they're trying to find a way to somehow include the oldest living Sox player, a 93 year old former middle infielder-- helluva lot better than Bo, IMO. (perhaps they can trade hip-replacement stories?)
  17. Longtime Oakland A's radio announcer Bill King passed today...
  18. Specualtion in the Bay Area is that A's third-base coach Ron Washington is secret fifth candidate-- makes sense since DePodesta was an assistant to Billy Beane and knows RW from their days together in Oakland. Washington certainly fits the profile of "employed by team not in playoffs" and should he be passed over (again) in Oakland, he may want to bolt.
  19. Molina would be a better option than Hernandez IMO. Both are very good defensively and Castro can provide a nice understudy to either, but Hernandez has some recent injury woes IIRC
  20. How are these guys listed/ranked?
  21. I can almost see MFY fans having this discussion fifteen years ago-- but with Mike Pagliarullo, Dan Pasqua and a 1B HR machine named Kevin Mass leading the resurgence-- while Jacobs is a nice story, let's not get overly optimistic! I still want a legitimate major league tested bat at 1B
  22. Bay Area scuttlebutt has A's Bullpen coach (and longtime--since they were etenagers in San Diego-- Billy Beane friend) Bob Geren to be the frontrunner to replace Macha. Macha was born and bred in Pittsburgh-- runors have him headed there (sucks for Art Howe, who'd been rumored as leading candidate for Bucs job) And A's third base coach Ron Washington scheduled to be interviewed by both Florida teams (among others)-- apparently he's the next WWSB, getting tons of interviews 'cause he's black and thereby fufills MLB's mandate--
  23. Despite fewer AB's (nearly 200), Mike outperforms Beltran (among others) in almost all offensive stats. I'm not saying we break the bank for him, but if it comes down to spending comparable sums on MP or Ramon Hernandez, for argument's sake, it's an easy decision. Piazza deserves to be bought back on performance, not just on his name or his past accomplishments.
  24. IIRC, Pinella went to Tampa so as to be close to his home...if that remains the case (and one could reasonably expect that), then a move to Miami to replace McKeon is a fair guess. I think it's a good fit--let's see Cabrera pull his stunts with Sweet Lou!
  25. nice analysis Z...
