  1. A's promote bench coach and former MFY backstop Bob Geren to manager...Geren beats Jamie Quirk and Orel Hershiser, and has managed the team's AAA affiliate, giving him a familiarity with many on the club. That's the last opening, I think.
  2. Reports have Baltimore landing lefty relief specialist Jamie Walker (from Detroit); 3 yrs, $11.5 million
  3. Windy City deal: Cubs send David Aardsma and minor leaguer to ChiSox for Lefty Neal Cotts...Aardsma is not bad.
  4. Posted: Thu Nov 16, 2006 12:33 am Post subject: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I won't buying it,even though I am sure I would score in November if I did.. Close the polls, we have a winner for post of the post-season. Too funny!
  5. Dear Edgy: On behalf of my client, the self-proclaimed coiner of Met nicknames, I hereby request that you immediately cease and desist from bestowing cute and/or catchy sobriquets on all Metly personae. The individual you refer to as "The Alchemist" shall henceforth be referred to as "Sprint" or some other banal name as designated by Valadius. I trust you will comply. As ever, Lawyer Tee
  6. Official: $51.5 million. Holy Smokes.

    CitiField

For another perspective on the ball-park of the future, check out the A's new hi-tech digs planned for Fremont...oaklandas.com Among other things, the entire stadium will be wired, allowing spectators to order food from their seats, vote on plays that have been rebroadcast on the diamond vision (was that a strike? a fair ball? -- this is a slippery slope- how long before some Veeck-like exec allows fans to vote on lineups and the like?) etc-- it will either revolutionize the spectator experience or go up in smoke. My money's on the latter. Why can't going to a major league game be entertainment enough?

  9. Chuck, I think you misread my post. I don't want to get into a pissing contest about which immigrant group had (or has) it worse-- I am just pointing out that even if NINA ads never existed (and they did-- the fact that they are few and far between is not surprising given the largely illiterate nature of the Irish immigrants--- why put in print that they were not wanted when 1. they couldn't read and 2. they couldn't afford the paper if they were literate?!) discrimination did (something even Jensen would acknowledge). As to stereotypes never being adopted by a thinking public, look no further than the Wild West shows of the 1890's, or the tricentennial of Jamestown (1907) where members of the native community were told they were not welcome in the historical exhibits, but could articulute their heritage in the amusement concourse...it is a slippery slope from objectifying someone to liquidating them. We've come a long way, thank God.
  10. Rich Aurilia anyone? RH, plays three infield positions. Good citizen, native Brooklynite...
  11. Cubs re-up with Aramis Ramirez (5 years, $73 million) and Kerry Wood (1 year, $1.5 million).
  12. Opinion: Celebratory banners should celebrate pennants and world championships, nothing else. FACT: The Mets wore pillbox hats in 1976 (on occasion)
  13. A 2007 Phillies lineup with three silver sluggers (Howard, Utley and Soriano) and a staff with Jamie Moyer scares me.
  14. A tactic to keep him from the Bronx for a year? Post a ridiculously high bid, then don't even try to sign him...you lose nothing in that scenario, right?
  15. Biggio re-ups with Houston: 1 year $5 million

    Glavine

Glavine files, says he's only got one more season in him (according to Marty Noble). If that's true, sweetening the pot with a second year probably won't make much of a difference-- me thinks he heads back to Atlanta.
  17. Orel Hershiser could be a second one...he was the pitching coach for Texas. no? (or was it LA?) and he is a hot commodity these days...
  18. Opinion: Steve J Rogers spends too much time looking at busts in the Diamond Club Lobby. Fact: Former Met and current Minny skipper Ron Gardenhire was born on an air force base in Germany.
  19. Josh Barfield to Cleveland--
  20. Art Howe named to coaching staff of Texas Rangers, reuniting with Oakland pal Ron Washington.
  21. oops: FACT: Former Met Jay Payton is testing the free-agent waters.
  22. opinion: Had Sisk been used, $10 would have been too much to see the NL champs play in '87.
  23. "He supplied lyrics to the music of boxing..." Cool phrasing there-- take notes SteveJ.
