  3. NYMR, that's the part I found most compelling, too. The comparison between Joe Borowski and Rafael Betancourt is amazing.
  4. Apropos of our recent thread on Wagner and two inning saves, Jason Stark: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3006756&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab1pos2
  5. Terry Puhl (this).

Maybe the Nats could move a squad to Montreal? Residents of that city are used to seeeing the best talent exported. j/k
  10. ]If the Brewers don't make the playoffs, it seriously weighs against Fielder. Andre Dawson won MVP for the last place Cubs. As Branch Rickey would say, "we can finish last without you, too".
  11. I imagine lots of voters would split the Mets between Wright and Reyes, with Beltran getting some consideration, too. Fielder looks good...anyone on Arizona having a lights-out type of year?

Edgy ]The Nats and their fans, at least have something to look forward to for the franchise. What would that be? Other than stadium issues (they have a new one on the horizon, and the Fish don't--at least not in SoFla), I think hte Marlins have a much brighter future and core around which to build: Cabrera, HanRam, Uggla, D-Train, Jacobs, Willingham--- I think the two most identifiable Nats--Dmitri Young and Nick Johnson--play the same position!
  13. A colleague of mine tells this apocryphal tale: While driving from Maine to Florida for Spring Break, he was pulled over for speeding in Georgia. An ornery patrolman told him "nobody goes through our state that fast." "Sherman did" came his reply....that night he was the guest of the local sheriff.

  15. There is a security detail of a few bicycle cops on the bridge, the main purpose of which is to spot and stop would be suicides. That's gotta be a tough beat.
  16. Yancy-- That's a great ride. I've done it myself. With the Bay Bridge closed this wekend, you'll have the city to yourself. Enjoy the holiday!
  17. Isn't that how Anaheim added Frankie Rodriguez (K-Rod) to their WS championship squad??
  18. Good to castillo back... I was concerned his injury was more serious than it appears to have been
  19. ]Win expectancy with the visting team winning by one in the bottom of the seventh: No Outs: 62.9% One Out: 69.3% Two Outs: 72.6% Thre Outs: 76.0% Those three outs increase the win expenctancy from 62.9% to 76.0%, or 13.1 points. Win expectancy with the visting team winning by one in the bottom of the ninth: No Outs: 82.3%% One Out: 91.1% Two Outs: 97.2% All the more reason to bring your stud in earlier, when the game is more in doubt and victory in jeopardy, than later (when it is all but assured).
  20. If that's true, that is great. Here in CA, authorities have resisited efforts to place a suicide barrier on the Golden Gate Bridge, for aesthetic reasons. A recent award-winning documentary chronicles the devastating effect suicide (by some accounts, one per week from the span) has. I'll try to find the link and post the infomation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bridge_(documentary_film) A colleague lost his daughter to this, so it is close to my heart.
  21. ]DocTee wrote: the last three outs are no more important than the 24 preceeding them Edgy: While importance isn't easily quanifiable, I don't think this is really so. Outs in the seventh inning of a 10-3 game aren't as important as outs in the ninth inning of a 10-9 game, because they're less likely to swing the result. And that's why they're the province of the Darren Olivers of the world. My point was that three outs in the seventh inning of a 3-2 game were as important as three in the ninth of a 3-2 game.
  22. I don't think closers need to finish games...the last three outs are no more important than the 24 preceeding them (or more if you are in extra frames)...sometimes the most crucial outs are in the 6-7-8 innings and I'd have no problem running Wagner out there then to get those outs, then letting someone else finish the game on a given day. <----and look who I am
  23. Ozzie Guillen takes lessons from Valadius: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=270829113 This guy should lose his job. If it's the "same shit since April" he deserves the blame. Calling his team out like that is bull
  24. Cincinatti: ten games under .500, six games out of first. With 18 games remaining against the three teams ahead of them -- Cards, Brewers, and Cubs,-- they could be spoilers at least.
