  1. third place?! what the shit is this?!
  2. does ron darling count?
  3. Of COURSE it's going to happen. Otherwise why would the internet be speculating about it? The internet never guesses wrong guys. If this doesn't pan out, it's all because Jeff opened up his stupid cereal-filled mouth and ruined the goddamn thing.
  4. i think griffey might have a shot, just because he's the anti-bonds. great hitter, great guy, never a whiff of juice.
  5. looking at the likely ballots coming up between now and then, the best chances we have at beating jeter to the punch are randy johnson, who has arguably a stronger HOF career than even greg maddux, pedro martinez, and ken griffey jr.
  6. the other side of hte analysis is, well, we see what the shift has done to lefty hitters, i guess, based on some data from older lefty hitters who could conveniently be declining also, but what about offense from righty hitters, who would not be facing the shift? if the righty offensive numbers have stayed flat, and hte decline is only due to the shift, then we have something to at least talk about meaningfully. but if the righty offensive numbers are down too, and i suspect that they largely are, well, then how do we go about blaming hte shift for that?
  7. imagine how bad offense would be if all hte good pitchers didn't blow out their elbows this year.
  8. what utter fucking nonsense that would be. if they want to pull the 2b and put him in the outfield, why not? pitcher, catcher, and 7 infielders (or 7 outfielders), fucking go for it! let the offense beat the damned shift. the pitcher and catcher's positioning is defined by rule. everyone else can go where you want them. will there be rules for how far left or right your infielders and outfielders can shift? how deep or shallow? because if you couldn't shift your SS to the 2b side of the bag, you just need to switch positions between your SS and CF, and have your CF (played by your regular SS) play absurdly shallow - like on the infield dirt shallow - and have your SS (played by your regular CF) play super-duper deep, like where your CF would normally play. this would of course be great for fantasy baseball, getting some outfielders SS eligibility, and vice versa.
  9. maybe oldest all star shortstop to play more htan one inning at the position, though not necessarily in the game. because cal ripken was 41 when he played shortstop in his final all star game, having switched with arod for the first inning. he played more htan one inning of course, though from the 2nd inning through the 5th, he played third.
  10. so my takeaway from that awful, awful video is that derek jeter demands so greatly that we all show him the respect he deserves, that he's just gonna stand there in the batters box not doing a damned thing until he's sure we've all paid our due homage. jerk.
  11. i have miggy and zimmerman at third, and miggy, morneau, and davis at first. i really need some outfield power....
  12. well, magadan should've been an allstar in 1990...
  13. Well done, internal decision makers!
  14. Damnit, second place! My kingdom for a home run hitter...
  15. we have an intramural softball league at work. it's been going on for over 20 years or so, i've played for maybe 10 years, i think. we typically have between 16 and 20 teams in the league, all are either employees or spouses, and residents of hte adjoining towns are eligible as well, but there aren't too many of those guys... despite an alarming lack of experience playing baseball related sports i've developed into a pretty solid righty 1bman, with a line drive, opposite field swing. i'm also a thoroughly unreliable outfield glove with a lot of range.

  17. he's got his fingers wrapped right around it, i'm sure. (see, this right here is why my kids can't read this forum)
  18. Bingo to Savannah Nelfi Zapata, C damnit, nelfi!
  19. damned near just as soon as they invented the possibility of a team with a losing record winning a division, our own mets just about pulled off hte feat, winning 82 against 79 losses in 72. not to be outdone, the 2005 padres won 82 games and bested our loss total with an even 80. that same year, the washington nationals managed to finish last in the NL east with a 0.500 record. it stands to reason, too, that if you can win a division with a losing record, you could also finish last in a division with a winning record. that record would be an astonishing 123-39, presuming all the teams in your division play 0.500 ball, and defeat all comers outside the division, except for your lowly mets, who would, of course, manage to lose one game to the dodgers.

Is it mathematically possible to win the division without winning half your games? of course. in fact, it's mathematically possible for a team to be significantly below 0.500 and win a division. though fairly unlikely. the easiest way to think about it is, if all the teams in the division play 0.500 ball against each other. and lose all their games outside hte division, except for one team which manages to accidentally win one of those out-of-division games. each team has 76 games in their own division, meaning you could win your division with as little as 39 wins, given my terribly unlikely scenario. that should be the theoretical minimum, unless i'm gloriously miscounting something...
  21. oh, c'mon. his 16.6 yankee WAR is more than lenny dykstra's 16.5 metly WAR. that's the stuff of legends right there.
