  2. The Dude does a lot more than just abide.
  3. I'd love to see Reynolds get in, just so he can be the second person to make a postseason appearance with no previous MLB games.
  4. I had a friend who had actually attended a Cubs World Series game. Alas, he died over a year ago. But he was planning to ask for tickets if the Cubs got into the series again. Knowing him, he would have scored them -- he was a world champion schmoozer and was able to talk his way into things like getting a job as an extra in The Hobbit.
  5. Game 6. I was home and working for a graphics company. When the Sox went up by two, I figured it was over, said, "well, if we had to lose, the Red Sox are a good team to lose to." My wife told me to watch the game until the end, though... I do remember a Vin Scully comment in the top of the tenth. Scully thought it was poor strategy for the Mets to have Howard Johnson hit away when pinch hitting in the bottom of the ninth. His partner in the booth thought otherwise. When they returned from the commercial, you could hear Scully say, "If he's good enough to hit away, why isn't he good enough to start?" just before he realized he was live. I don't remember watching Game 7. I don't really know why. I probably would have been at my writer's group, but that ended around 9 pm, so I could have caught it.
  6. Is there any question (especially since it was already answered)? The only issue was how he felt after Thursday. Too much was made of his "100 pitches warming up." You don't throw your best on every pitch while warming up; the point is not to throw strikes but to get your muscles ready and test out your control. You can do that with 80 mph fastballs. Also, the number is misleading anyway. A starter has eight warmup pitches each inning, plus those before the game. So going seven innings means there were 56 -- say 70 -- warmup pitches even before the pitch count starts. No one complains about how they tire out the pitcher. Getting up and down to warm up in the bull pen is really no different from pitching an inning and then sitting in the dugout, and the tosses are easier.
  7. It not the number of outs -- it's the number of pitches. Familiar threw 21 tonight. He threw 21 on Thursday for six outs. That's not all that big a workload.
  8. There was never any question that Harvey would start tonight: their top(ish) pitcher on regular rest. It's also reasonable to wait on Syndergaard to see how he feels. Matz is probably the best option if he's not: Niese would be too much of a risk, and Colon should stay in the bullpen for now (He's going to be more effective if he comes in with his soft fastballs after the batters have been used to seeing 95+.)
  9. Sandy is saying he won't be available. I hope that the Mets blow out the Cubs so much that Matt Reynolds gets to play.
  10. They don't even quote him correctly. (Everyone leaves off the meat of the quote, which was basically saying, "If a player were gay, I'd treat him like any other teammate.")
  11. Chance in 1964 had numbers that Koufax could envy. ERA of 1.65 (Koufax's best was 1.77) 15 shutouts (Sandy never managed more than 11). ERA+ of 200 (Koufax's best was 190). He won 20 vs. 19 for Koufax (Met killer Larry Jackson won 24 and got more CY votes), all for a team that went 82-80. It was a career year for him; he was never even close to those numbers again. But that year he was better than Koufax in just about everything the voters thought was important in that era.
  12. Hernandez had a late injury, so they had Maine substitute.
  13. Cal Koonce, Jack Dilauro, and Bobby Pfeil were on the 1969 team in the postseason, but didn't play.
  14. Large graphic, but very satisfying to read.
  15. Organs also give many more options. They have a vaudeville theater here with an working pipe organ; you can get just about any sound you like out of it -- trumpets, drums, clarinets, etc. It looks like they also were easily connected to PA systems without microphones. A quick look at the history was that the first one used for a sport was installed at Chicago Arena for Black Hawks games in 1929, and the Cubs added the first baseball one to Wrigley in 1941.

Johnson was known for his kindly and gentle demeanor so even if he said anything, it would have been just a quiet word, likely in private. Ty Cobb, however, would have killed him.
  19. I think the fight started when Papelbon bragged he was a bigger dick than Harper. Harper couldn't let his dickishness be challenged.
