René has found himself north to I-88 (aka the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway), east and west across Illinois. You ain't a big leaguer until you cross the Canadian border, René. Get out of Illinois.Hah! I-88 is in New York, between Schenectady and Binghamton. AKA, the Warren M. Anderson Expressway. Anderson was Senate Majority Leader for ages and lived in Binghamton. I think they named it after him so he'd use it and then double the traffic (Alas, Anderson flew back and forth to Albany). It's the Road that No One Uses. They once cut it down from four lanes to two, routing all traffic onto the two open lanes. It didn't even slow traffic. Unless you specify Binghamton or Oneonta as your destination, no mapping program will take you there. About half the exits tell you you're getting off at Route 7, which you can see most of the way. I drove it to visit my daughter in DC.

I guess I was enjoying the bounty that came along in the mid 80s after about a decade when the Mets got very little attention. I read If At First. A Dream Season. Bats. Rookie. And then Lenny Dykstra's book, Nails, came along. That's the one that broke the spell. I realized that no amount of team loyalty would convince me to read a book that was "written" by Lenny Dykstra. After that I had the freedom to be more selective. Just curious, but did you read The Wrong Season?
  3. I hope by the end of the season, he can stop being the leader on this list.
  4. I vote for Num Nummo, though the reference is pretty obscure.
  5. It's worth exploring, but not likely. He's going to want a long-term contract and there are other suitors.
  6. There even suggestions that the Mets sign him, which gets 100 on the "Hell, no" scale.
  7. News is that he's been released from the hospital (tests found nothing wrong) and will be with the team for the homestand.

  9. Good enough, but the damn bit about the sloth was completely unfunny after the first visual. It milked the joke ever worse than Family Guy. Overall, though, it was pretty standard and by-the-numbers.
  10. Syndergaard also said at first that his first pitch in the World Series got away from him. I don't believe his story. I don't like Utley, but the umpire made the right call. It's not that Syndergaard is known for his lack of control
  11. Cabrera takes off the helmets of everyone who doesn't take off his own. But who takes off his helmet? He can't because he doesn't remove helmets from those who take off their own. And who shaves the barber? Paging Bertrand Russell.
  12. Sucks to be Ty Kelly right now.
  13. Oh, I know he disapproved of having Johnson hit away. But if he was being sent up there to bunt, why not just have Elster do it instead of wasting a bench player? And, as things worked out, a successful bunt may have led to a win. Mazzilli hit a fly ball at the next AB. How far did it go?
  14. I'm still looking for confirmation about something I thought I heard Scully say. It's the sixth game of the 86 series. Ninth inning. Mets have runners on first and second and they send Howard Johnson up to pinch hit. Scully thinks Johnson should be bunting, but he swings away and strikes out. Scully makes it clear he doesn't like that strategy. Inning ends without a run scored. Cut to commercial. Back to the show. Scully, obviously talking about the inning with the other guy in the booth, says "If he's good enough to swing away, why isn't he good enough to start?" He then realizes the mic is live and goes back to the game. Am I misremembering?

'Panic' to me would mean dealing some potentially valuable future piece for an outsider because you think the team is going to fall apart without imported help. But Loney would be essentially free to pick up and, unlike Duda, we wouldn't be invested in him past this season so he could play a straight 1B platoon with Flores while allowing Wilmer to get in the occasional 2B & 3B action filling in for Wright and/or Walker. Loney also strengthens the LH-hitting bench just as Wilmer strengthens the right. And likely both Campbell & Kelly are banished with De Aza representing a much stronger 25th roster spot. My thoughts exactly. It only costs the major league minimum salary to get him. He's no Duda, but he's a strong replacement.
  16. James Loney looks like an interesting stopgap. Best part: the Mets won't have to give anything up. https://www.sny.tv/mets/news/mets-are-curious-about-loney-loney-is-curious-about-mets/179969738

  18. M&M's® joins the Mets as a new partner in 2016. A great fit, since Bartolo has the physique of an M&M.
  19. Colon named co-player of the week
  20. He was available yesterday to pinch hit.
  21. Wanna bet than, when Barolo retires, this will be the clip they show.
  22. 761 to go! At this rate, he'll catch Bonds in 16,475 AD. Set your calendar!

I didn't think it was likely, but I certainly thought it was firmly ensconced in the realm of possibility. But not a strong possibility. Around here, people were thinking that Yoenis was gone at that point, and it wasn't until three weeks later that reports started leaking out that he might be interested in re-signing.
  24. dinosaur jesus wrote: If he signed with the Mets thinking he was going to play every day, or at least platoon with Lagares, then he's being damn nice about having to ride the bench. I respect that a lot. Is it possible they warned him they were still going after a bigger name? At the time the signed him, no one in the world though they could get Cespedes, and they didn't sign Yoenis until a month later. I think the potential for a postseason share makes it much easier to ride the bench.
  25. Collins said that they couldn't find Cespedes at first, so he had Duda in the on deck circle as a placeholder.
