  1. Not hard to do. They play the Braves in the first series. Move the opener up from April 3 to April 1. Fly back on the 4th. Next home game is the 7th. Start spring training three days earlier for both teams.
  2. Tebow was a great college QB, so he had that behind him when he joined the NFL. He is very demonstrative about his faith, which played well with religious NFL fans, and he won a couple of playoff games with long passes when people thought things were over. Scouts never thought he was a particularly good QB, but he did have enough talent to get lucky. It built up his fan base (many of whom were fans of his college career). His clean-living style is also very appealing to some.
  3. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Cards beat the Giants. I think that's more of a No, it's good news. Now the Mets are ahead of both teams. If the Giants had won, the Mets would be tied with them.
  4. Gavin Ceccini makes Bud Harrelson look like Frank Howard. I'm surprised he's not mistaken for the clubhouse boy.
  5. I still have the 1969 season preview issue. Their capsule prediction for the Mets: "Back to the cellar again." Just a tad off.
  6. How does it hurt the team? Most likely, it will have no effect at all. And there's a slim chance it may help. It's not worth getting bothered about. If it wasn't Tebow, but some undrafted ex-college guy, who would care?

  8. It'll be a draw for a few weeks, and plenty of people will be showing up to see him fall on his face. It's not even an extra expense: the team will need to fill out their minor league rosters anyway, and why not do it with someone who might draw some fans (and certainly draw publicity)? I doubt he'll ever play in the majors except as a stunt.
  9. While not a great film, Wilder's role in Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex shows just how great an actor he was. Say what you can, but any actor who can show he's falling in love with a sheep -- almost entirely by his expression and body language -- is truly an excellent one.
  10. Ron Locke never found the key to a successful career. Danny Napoleon hoped to conquer baseball, but failed.
  11. Bill Monbouquette gave small bunches of flowers as gifts. Ralph Terry loved big, soft towels. Jack Fisher was an angler in the offseason.
  12. In the history of baseball, only twice did a team have two players on the roster with the same first and last names. Both times, it was the Mets: 1962: Bob Miller and Bob Miller (Robert L. Miller was also one of three 1962 Mets to play on a Mets pennant winning team.) 2000: Bobby Jones and Bobby Jones.
  13. I think the Bobby Joneses ruined it for everyone.
  14. Last year, after a memorable tearful moment, the Mets backed out of a deal for Carlos Gomez. Today, the Astros DFAed him. I don't know what was in his supposedly dodgy medical report, or if that has anything to do with his problems, but this is looking to be the best deal the Mets never made.
  15. Rockin' Doc: just noticed your sig. I have a hell of a story involving that song.
  16. It's plus to get rid of Bastardo. Niese will be useful in his place in the bullpen, and could become a fifth starter if needed.
  17. Good pickup, but it's not going to help much this year.

IIRC he had never played short before, and he played well. Not for injuries, but because their regular shortstop, Ray Oyler, had a slash line of .135/.213/.186. To be fair, that year he was batting 40 points lower than his lifetime average...
  19. I don't mind the trade, but it leaves us with too many left handed outfielders (and no good choice in CF) and a shortage of infielders.
  20. I thought it was Cy Williams, but I guess there's been a shift.
  21. No. Satchell Paige was 47, and Rivera was a few months older.
  22. One of the fringe benefits of being a Mets fan is that you can learn all about unusual medical conditions: spinal stenosis, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome... It makes bone spurs seem almost quaint.
  23. Most games with the Mets without playing in a World Series as a Met.. 1. Jose Reyes: 1050 (at start of season) 2. Rey Ordonez: 916 3. Carlos Beltran 839 4. Todd Hundley: 829 5. John Stearns: 810 6. Kevin McReynolds: 787 7. Dave Magadan: 701 8. Dave Kingman: 664 9. George Foster: 655 10. Hubie Brooks: 654 Projected: Jose Reyes: 0

If you have located an opponent who has advocated the jettisoning of Conforto, please present this person, otherwise, please spare us such arguments. here's an article pondering how Conforto fits into the plans and how. https://86again.wordpress.com/2016/07/04/will-the-mets-clutter-hold-conforto-back/ I exaggerated wishing Conforto into the cornfield, but the article does include "maybe the Mets should start prepping for the Nimmo era" I was simply drawing a comparison about overreacting and making definitive conclusions based on a few handfuls of AB. And it's a common enough theme. highly valued prospect gets called up an fans say "he's here now, you can't sit him." and pencil him into the lineup for the next 9 years. Hell fans were ready to jettison d'Arnaud this spring for Plawecki. The Mike Vail effect.
