  1. Utterly charming. I'm a big fan of Aardman Animation, who have a long streak of great films (their worst -- Flushed Away -- is still very good). The movie took a bit to get going, but one it hit its stride, it was wonderful.
  2. I think the Wilmer Flores game on the 31st could be the Black Cat game of 2015. (For the youngsters)
  3. Two things have to happen for there to be a chance: 1. The team must be willing to commit the money -- at least as much as they're paying Wright, and probably more. 2. Cespedes must be willing to waive a portion of that clause that makes him a free agent five days after the WS. He can agree to make it 30 days so they can negotiate. #1 is the big hurdle. The team has $11 million coming off the books if Colon doesn't come back (I doubt they'll ask him), and another $8 million if they don't bring back Murphy. There's also the $2 million they saved on Mejia's salary. So they should be able to afford one year, but things get sticky after that.
  4. Sandy is really going all-in, isn't he?
  5. Is he in a white room?

Milwuakee reporter says Mets backed off Gomez deal due to money, not medicals http://metsblog.com/metsblog/milwuakee-reporter-says-mets-backed-off-gomez-deal-due-to-money-not-medicals/ That doesn't make much sense. The Mets knew what Gomez was owed. If that was an issue, it would have been mentioned up front, not when everything else was in place. Besides, next year Colon comes off the books (I assume they won't re-sign him), which means Gomez's salary is actually a decrease in payroll.
  7. Yes. I thought the rule was you can't trade a DLed player, for obvious reasons. Maybe that video of Wheeler was bait. In any case, Milwaukee is evidently confident the TJ surgery is successful. It would have been nice to have Wheeler in the rotation next year, but with Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard, Matz, and Niese coming back (and Montero and Verret in the wings, with Fulmer around in a few years), they won't miss them. Flores has no place to play now that Uribe and Johnson are here. For the first time in ages, the Mets are making a "win now" move.
  8. Wikipedia confirms it. Of course, the short existence of the team has something to do with it, plus the fact that, unlike, say, the Mets, their early teams featured younger players and not over-the-hill ones. The 62 Mets had Richie Ashburn (and maybe one day Gil Hodges), but that was because they were going for known players (especially if they played for the Dodgers) even though they weren't likely to help the team on the field.
  9. Sandy said they hadn't been notified when they made the deal. As for Mejia
  10. I'm partial to Clutch. [youtube:2dcj8v5n]pFnLirXjjto[/youtube:2dcj8v5n]
  11. I haven't read the book, but I would think the movie took much from it. You rarely get plotting that clever from Hollywood alone.
  12. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Don't overpay, Mets. The shit is free all over the internet. He's dead, but his grandsons are still available.
  13. A version of the legend, starring Ian McKellen as a 90-year-old version Holmes living in retirement and raising bees. His memory foggy, he attempts to write the truth about on particular case.
  14. Too many Mets fans just want to reenact the Scott Kazmir trade. The reality is that to get the type of player who can make an immediate difference, they're going to have to offer either Harvey, DeGrom, or Syndergaard. If Matz comes back from the DL from the deadline, then they can offer him, too. Niese won't do it. Wheeler and Montero are DL'ed. Gee is probably not even enough to get a good prospect these days. The hard cold fact is that other teams don't give away game changers for nothing. So put your money where your mouth is. Who do they give up? Harvey, DeGrom, or Syndergaard?
  15. http://www.wsj.com/articles/why-a-new-york-transplant-picked-the-mets-1437002453 The article is great, but the best part is (surprisingly) the comment: "Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for the sun to rise. Rooting for the Mets is like rooting for the sun to rise...in the West."
  16. Get over it, folks. Comforto isn't ready. His stats make that clear.
  17. Do you mean Mets games named for an opposing player? Because that gives you the Rick Ankiel Game. Or Mets games named for a nonhuman: the Black Cat game.
  18. So the Mets lineup now has two players they lost to other clubs but got back before the season ended. I wonder if that's happened before.
  19. Pixar animated offering about the anthropomorphized emotions in an 11-year-old girl's head.
  20. Brad Bird's first live-action film, where a young woman discovers a pin from the 1964 World's Fair, that takes her on an adventure to a World of Tomorrow (and George Clooney).
  21. The Daily News has confirmed it. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-designate-pitcher-dillon-gee-assignment-article-1.2258844 So has the Post. I liked Gee, and the team has been jerking him around all season, but he's just not up to snuff, especially with Matz ready and Wheeler and Montero coming back next year.
  22. TheOldMole wrote: What was Pumpsie Green's other distinction besides being #16?First player to get drunk and try to get on a plane to Israel in the middle of the season without a passport or luggage (tied with Gene Conley).
  23. The words on the chair sum it all up: The Who were still a terrific band through Who Are You. Kenny Jones just wasn't up to following Keith.
  24. Better than I had thought it would be. Clearly the second best animated film of the year.
