There was a very different electorate in 1982. The group has since been pared down considerably. Fewer 98 year olds who haven't written in 25 years. There were also writers back then who only covered baseball for a short part of their career, but whose BBWAA membership somehow stayed active, even though most of their career might have been on a boxing beat, or restaurants, or dance.

If you are responsible to pay money to get rid of a player, and you are responsible to pay money when a player gets rid of you, that's what I understand is meant by asymmetrical. Whether parties enter into negotiations with equal power or not, neither party, if they are smart and clever, is going to cede more power than is ceded back at them. If you are negotiating with a hostage-taker (to give a crude but important example) and he wants an escape route, he's not going to give up all the hostages for a motorcycle, because then he's got nothing left to work with, and the police have no incentive to let him escape. If you are the police negotiator, you aren't going to give a motorcycle, a helicopter, a pilot, and clear route to the helipad for just one hostage, because then the gunman has no incentive to spare the other hostages. So as the offer gets hammered out, one hostage is given up for the motorcycle, one for the cleared route, one for the helicopter, one for the pilot, and if the maybe the guy gets to hold on to one hostage (the bank manager, presumably) until he has safely escaped. Boras — at least in Cohen's view — wants Alonso to get the bank's money, the safe escape, and get to keep or kill all the hostages. However rich you are, it's operating against your own interests to give a player an incentive to exit a contract.

The Bechdel Test asks (a) does a film has at least two female characters? ( do they have a conversation with each other? and © do they have a conversation with each other about something other than a man? It's generally presented as singular question, though, rather than on that continuum of three questions. Also, I confess that I tend to be a sucker for comedies that deal with the grown-up, ****ed-up remains of dysfunctional families.

It'd be very weird, over two decades later, if Adrien Brody won a second Best Actor Academy Award, again playing an Eastern European Jewish Holocaust survivor in a film beginning with THE, ending with -IST, and having two syllables in between.

I will say this for the film — it has an off-the-charts score on the The Bechdel Test, without seeming to make a point of that. Like Dumb and Dumber, it has a full-time comic actor teamed up with one who isn't particularly associated with comedy, but gives the latter plenty of room to work and she matches up nicely. I find Awkwafina to be something of a trip. Part of her appeal as a film actor is that she doesn't seem to be quite comfortable on film. Her timing can be a beat off, she doesn't seem to have an intuitive sense of where the camera is, and her voice isn't modulated at the same level of the rest of the actors. Even her teeth aren't all straight. She's relatable because she seems to be failing her screen test right in front of us, but powers through anyhow. It's kind of remarkable that she starred in a Marvel film when everything about those films is tight and crisp, if nothing else. As her character is such a poorly adjusted misfit in this film, she slots in perfectly. I guess the first part of her name is supposed to reference her awkwardness.

I guess I'm still not sure what has been proven, but yeah, Mike Piazza didn't fail to gain election in 2013, 2014, and 2015 because one guy didn't vote for him, but because 42.2%, 37.8%, and 30.1% of the electorate failed to vote for him in those respective years. And if we can't respect those outcomes, I don't think there is any process we are going to accept.

Chasing down that last holdout will always, always be done in frustration. There will always be holdouts, if only to draw attention to themselves as contrarians, and putting energy into chasing them down only raises their profiles and amplifies their positions, while having no effect on the outcome.

I didn't expect that to be particularly LOL funny.

The voters who voted against many of those figures can speak for themselves, and many have. To me, it doesn't matter, because when you're in, you're in, and the percentages don't matter to me. Others feel otherwise. All people are flawed, so if you're pedantic enough, or want to distinguish yourself with a "Look at me!" minority view, no matter how strained, you can make a case against anybody. In Ted Williams' time, the notion of distinguishing between "Hall-of-Famer" and "First-Ballot Hall-of-Famer" — which is still a distinction plenty of people still make even though nothing in the voting instructions suggests it should be there — was even more pronounced. Beyond that, there wasn't the five-year waiting period for a stretch, so players like Joe Dimaggio would lose votes from some writers based on the notion that he might un-retire, as if somehow an actual Hall-of-Famer on the field playing would be farcical. I, actually, would love to date a person's eligibility as something like 20 years from the start of his or her professional career. That way we would occasionally have a few Hall-of-Famers still taking the field late in their careers, with a nice little patch on the sleeve to show off.

Wagner, lest it go unremembered, was in his tenth and final year on the ballot. He will be, somewhat surprisingly, the first lefthanded reliever in the Hall of Fame.
