Amazing inning in that all three Reds outfielders have looked like high schoolers. -

Also, Viento's sac fly should have advanced all three runners. -

When McLean strikes out a guy to end the inning, he walks off the mound with a deGromian authority. Especially when he dots a corner with a called strike three. It's a shame that Hernandez is not a soccer fan, as Spain has one of the top two or three men's teams in the world, and are probably alone atop of the women's national teams. -
The Mountain Goats are an indy folk rock outfit that's been around since the early nineties, perhaps still trying to recover from their meh name. But in 2019 they released this track about a legendary righthander. Maybe it was shared back then at the old forum, but I just heard it today, and was moved to share it again. Somewhat melancholy, but built around a beautiful Spanish guitar lick, it seems to be set during Gooden's American League years, when he was no longer a great starting pitcher, no longer a good starting pitcher, but still a big-league starting pitcher, looking back to the days not too long before when his mere presence was surreal. You can dig the studio version or the live one, which sounds alright for what seems like an iPhone recording.

I'm not sure, but I think Alonso leads the American League in players left on base.

Doesn't Santillan know he is supposed to throw that ball behind his back?

The 2026 Mets — We Flail at Sliders Away
-
Weirdos doing something between the "Tarzan Boy" chant and the Tomahawk Chop chant.
-
Two more stranderinos. The Mets miss Tyrone Taylor.
-
Let's see you try that shit against Benge.
-
Both of the first two have walked. CORREA IS GENIUS!!!
-
Tying run up. Something's gotta givygive.
-
Bad rundown skills, Mark Vientos.
-
OK, Kai Correa, show us what you've got.
-
Mendoza has some hilarious gesticulations, with his hands almost always mirroring each other.
-
Young and Melendez both got lifted against the lefty, but right now, Baty seems like the guy I would have liked to see pinch-hit for.
-
Five.
-
The last four called strikes should have been challenged.
-
Mark Vientos suddenly getting something done. Maybe there's a law of conservation between him and Baty. When one is productive, the other is utterly drained of skills.
-
Baty sure chases some errant sliders.
-
It's fascinating how two teams can play each other pretty close to even over the course of a series, while one team is outscoring the other 17-1.

After an extended rehab period, the Mets get a frontline starter back, but whether his rehab is complete, and whether they particularly wanted him back at all, is still up for debate. It was the butt-end of a doublle-header, and lest it go unsaid, the results — 3 runs in 2 2/3 innings, with 3 walks and only one strikeout — weren't pretty, throwing 50 pitches against the lowly Rockies and walking off into rehab limbo. And when the team finally came up with a diagnosis — lumbar pine inflammation — it too wasn't pretty, reminding one of the spinal stenosis that ultimately ended David Wright's career prematurely. You hate to say the guy's done — 9.00 ERA aside. We've all seen bursts of hopeful indicators, in the majors and minors — elevated volume setting up that devastating forkball. But usually an inning later, the velocity and control disappear, and you get the guy they have been getting. That's life, but what seems like it was meant to be avoided was the rehab ending today. David Peterson was rested enough to be today's starter or bulk reliever or whatever, but he was forced into mopup duty in yesterday's rout, and Kodai is forced forward today. All our best to him. And maybe he is ready. Maybe, maybe. We blew all of our Zack Short facts in the last post, but it's curious that Vidal Bruján has been sent to DFAville. He certainly was unproductive, but playing every eight to ten days, primarily in low-leverage situations, he hardly has been a difference maker, and to look at Shorty's career, he is unlikely to provide more, as the 2024 Mets were one of the teams he has played himself off of. But maybe their scouts see something that isn't coming through. Maybe he's Luis Torrens 2026, with a singular tool set waiting for a team that can isolate him in the right spots. Maybe, maybe, maybe.
