    How about for players who have a higher value than those of Raley and Minter and other one-year guys, but still might be a year or two off? Because those two certainly do have 2027 value, but free agents from this offseason can offset that loss.

    I don't expect it, but I desire it. That said, a dude should at least consult the GM in such cases, so they aren't working at cross-purposes.

    For what it's worth, Davey Johnson decided to make Roger McDowell a reliever, and if you believe his book Bats, the main guy he consulted on it was Keith Hernandez.

    Tim Stauffer was a Mainian a Mainiac a Downeaster. John Maine, on the other hand, was not.

    The manager's job perhaps should be to win that day's game, but clearly that isn't the priority. It wasn't last night, it wasn't the before last night, it wasn't before Andy Green got the gig, and it hasn't been for a while. The first job of the Mets' manager, and I imagine most managers, is sustainability — sustaining today's assets so they will be available for tomorrow, and usually, it's a tomorrow that never comes. I reject that — every game is somebody's first and it's somebody else's last, and it should be played (and managed) that way — but it's the way it is in 2026.

    Winning is clearly not a priority. If there were shots of Soto in the dugout grabbing a bat, and pestering the manager to let him pinch-hit, that might have been something. But if showcasing is a priority, they probably ought to send Benge, Ewing, McLean, Scott, and Thornton back down until after the deadline. They can get their playing time, and more room is available for Operation Showroom. I don't want this, but pretending to keep some sort of balance isn't a pretty picture. Baty is stuck somewhere in the middle — not really being showcased for a selloff, but not really looking like a part of the team's future either. More playing time may help allow him to change his trajectory for now. Maybe he can get more of a foothold in one category or another with a good week. Dubious, but, I dunno. If they move Bichette, though, third base becomes wide open for him once more.

    No, Polanco has shown some wheels since his has been back. Alvarez, Vientos, Soto, Wagaman, and (disappointingly) Bichette and Mauricio have all been slower than him when gunning it this year.
