    That certainly appears to include the playoffs. That's a heck of a bargain with fate, considering he's 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA.

    Not only did the Reds lose despite sending Chase Burns to the mound against the defending world champs, but they lost by pulling him after three no-hit innings. Baseball is getting weirder and weirder every week.

    Catching the Nats is terrific. Catching the Reds, the Pirates, and/or the Marlins is better.

    It turns out that this Mason Miller guy is pretty good, and behind his efforts shutting down the Nats in the ninth, the Pads take a 3-2 win, and the Mets take a share of fourth place! (They're actually a tiny percentage behind but as both teams are the same number of games back, we'll call it even.) This is the Mets' first taste of the air outside the cellar since May 31! This is also the first time they have had a claim to any league-wide place higher than 13th since, well, the same date. And as you can see below, there is even a period there where they were below the Giants. Tough times in the deep water, but now we're looking at the fine art of surfacing. Your job now is to root for the Dodgers to bring the roof down on Chase Burns and the Reds.

    Keith Hernandez, nearing 73, bespectacled, and sometimes (oftentimes) not fully attentive, has put on a season-long clinic in strike zone observation in this, the first year of MLB ABS challenges. He has predicted the outcome of what seems to be a minimum 90% of ball-strike challenges, despite (a) making his calls instantly, without the benefit of a replay, and (b) not having the batter's box superimposed on the screen, like we usually do. Granted, I'm taking Gary Cohen's word on (b), and also, Gary hasn't insisted that to be the case in quite a while. Under any circumstances, the performance is impressive, and details only change the degree. A side benefit is the novelty value of predicting these outcomes has kept Keith more engaged than he has been in a few years, when his restless mind and native boredom has allowed his focus to wander. At any rate, how do we monetize this? Is there a "prediction marketplace" where we can put a bundle on Keith?

    Now it's time to put on your Padres gear and start rooting for San Diego. If they take care of business this afternoon/early evening, the Mets are a fourth-place club.

    Jonah Reid Tin Chee Matthew Tong disappeared for a bit in the second. Utterly. But there he is back in the third.

    Gets in a 3-0 hole to open the second against Otto Lopez and then whiffs him on the next three. Eye-opening.

    Perez gets swing and misses on some weak off-speed stuff. I imagine changing off the fastball and him being a giant help him out.

    Gary Carter mentioned among the leaders in homeruns after intentional walks. Darling speculates that it tended to happen after walking Andre Dawson. Gary Cohen counters that it also happened after walking Strawberry. Only as a third thought did anybody mention Keith. Did they not watch the Mets? Carter — when he was good — batted behind Keith, day in and day out.

    Jonah Reid Tin Chee Matthew Tong looking brilliant, coming from straight over the top and whiffing the side. Changeup screwing them into the ground.

    Immediately optioned to Syracuse. To make room for them, they DFA'd catcher Shawn Ross, who went to waivers and got claimed by Toronto. Shawn had been claimed from Pittsburgh a month earlier. No apparent relation to Dylan Ross.

    A 2-0 lead in the first and we've got a three-man booth with Zeile in Keith's chair. I thought Keith always took to the Florida trips to help his tax position.
