  1. Makes the reinforcing of the trade with the Buck/Thole swap even more fascinating.
  2. Also notable is Marlon Boid's first appearance in center on the year. Terry is clearly disquieted about Valdespin's glove. Collins : Valdespin :: Manuel : Murphy
  3. Yeah, anybubby who hates on Vaughn, or conflates him with Bonilla, just ain't willing to pay attention.
  4. The Starland vocal band were made up of John Denver's collaborators. And I've long suspected that, had it been associated with the genial and engaging Denver, and not with the largely faceless SVB, it might have been remembered not as the embarrassing pop country drech it's treated like, but perhaps more like a goofy and fun lark, as "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" is. I'm not sure if the Anchorman and Good Will Hunting appearances were a step in that direction (irony is so confusing), but they probably made the SVBs a lot of extra $$.
  5. (Apologies to readers who have been waiting all comment for a Big Lebowski joke. Not happening.) Yeah, that Song of the South joke was much fresher.
  6. Boik down.
  7. How does Foley's get so much publicity for this dubious operation? (G-FaFiF eloquently labeled it "The Hall of the Available to Attend.") I'm proud that Staub measures up to the Joe Flaherty standard.
  8. Frayed Knot wrote: Too early, I think, to just toss him on the scrap pile, but if he doesn't get his act together he is likely to find himself there. And the bigger problem is that in this post-Santana/pre-Wheeler era he finds himself in the 3rd spot in the rotation instead as a more comfortable #5 guy. I prefer to think of it as the post-Santana/pre-Wheeler/has-anybody-seen-Marcum? era.
  9. No, I would think if his glove is his only calling card, then den Dekker's going to get the call as soon as he is fit. I still think of Tejada as a fundamentally sound shortstop, offensively and defensively, but his head has been buttbound a lot this season. I wouldn't be surprised if the cold provided a crippling distraction. But mental discipline is a part (I'd say a big part) of what separates big leaguers from their largely just-as-talented colleagues at AAA. And his has been absent. I think maybe the best thing for him is to give Valdespin one or two starts over the next week at shortstop --- to reclaim his perspective and remind him of what he is and what he isn't.
  10. And probably on McEwing and Shinjo, depending on which year we're talkin'. But I hear you about Gee. A three-deep rotation is one thing. Two-deep does nothing for me, and it saps vital life force from the bullpen. Laff and Heff are at least fakin' it.
  11. Quintanilla is hitting .250 in Las Vegas. No other way to describe Tejada's work yesterday than saying that he threw away a win. His momentum was carrying him toward first, but Davis didn't even have a chance to so much as stab for it. Cowgill, on the other hand, went 3-6 at the top of the lineup in game two. (Though that's hardly typical.) Looks like Terry is playing him, Nieuwie, and Valdy in roughly equal porportion until one distinguishes himself. Who knows how long that will take, but I get the idea that Valdy is trending up and Nieuwenhuis downward. If it's his glove keeping him in the majors, then he isn't going to be there long, 'cuz it ain't that good.
  12. Working Nieuwie away, where he likes it.
  13. Maybe Gee can come back and pitch in this one too.
  14. Ashie makes his 68th flip on the Tejada issue. This is all to set up a Timo Perez homer.
  15. And we have our blownie.
  16. Rice, no hold for you!
  17. Man, these guys totally have the cowl advantage.
  18. Helton still has a great swing. Only one benchie left for Colorado.
  19. Wonder how tough it is for Brandon to get loose twice on a night like this.
  20. "Sweet Caroline" filling the empty seats of Coors Field.
  21. Great strikeout for Atchy.
  22. Those Latin catchers love to show off their batting eyes.
  23. Three hits for Cowguts.
  24. That's the tying run on.
  25. Meanwhile these Moes in the Rockies booth are gonna call him "Jacob Turner" all night. Not quite the same as stereotyping a hemisphere, though.
