I'm sure it's possible that he can do all the right things and come back ahead of schedule while still obtaining responsible clearance from real doctors. Folks do it all the time. The big problem with the September scenario is the weeks he lost between the injury and the surgery. But let's be honest, everybody says they'll be back sooner than expected. I remember somebody (McEwing?) declaring that he didn't care about reports that his season was over, he knew in his heart he'd be back, failing to realize in his proclamation that the team had put him on the 60-day disabled list and there were less than 60 days left in the season. But you want the guy to be motivated. Rehab is hard. It's boring, it's lonely, and it's painful. Middle-aged folks sometimes love it because physical therapists are often young and fit and wear tight workout clothes and they touch you are are sometimes sexily strict, but in general, it's a big PitA, and focusing on a target, even (or especially) an unreasonably optimistic one, and celebrating your benchmarks are what gets you through it.
