  1. Yeah, I remember somebody ribbing him on some goof he was having, saying "Get a job." His response was, "I already got a job, and it's the best job in the world."
  2. Only 17-year-old in the Appy League last year. And there were only 14 18-year-olds. One of those 18-year-oldies was also a Kingsporter --- 2012 draftee Chris Flexen, who went 8-1 / 2.09 in 11 starts. Interesting to see if they end up in Coney or jump to Savannah this year. Smiff might also jump to a full-season league.
  3. Yeah, Turner saved a bad season last year with suddenly-in-September production, but he only saved it on paper. He wasn't firing when the team needed him. He's certainly not the hitter Satin is, and if he was a better fielder, that edge was disappearing or had disappeared. He's gone because Joshie won his slot.
  4. That's like the third Rosario-is-new comment. Come on! He's Amed Fucking Rosario! Know this man!

  6. Fun guy, but for a bench player, but in that sense, enjoyed being a big leaguer a little too much for a guy whose status as such was highly tenuous. Was platooning with Murphy at second the day Wright crashed into the Davis. The next day --- and for much of the rest of the summer --- he was third, firstr was at second, and Tejada was brought up to play second. Essentially replacing their two best best hitters with Tejada and the inverse of the Murphy/Turner platoon, the team essentially treaded water in the standings, and I appreciated him for this. Getting fat, becoming a negative on defense, showing up at weddings with his fray-fray untended, I didn't appreciate as much. One dark night, he was tweeting about heading into Vegas for a fun weekend, and some chick (or so the photo said, but I have my doubts) was all "Hey, @redturn2, I'll be at the Borgada at 10:00. Let's MEET!" And he was all "@BarbieDreamhouse CRAZY! See you there!" And I was all ("Private Message: Justin, you are TOTALLY being set up here. Watch the hell out.") He said he was hip and knows what cooks. Maybe, but his goodtime-goofball persona had me worried. Hey, maybe Barbie turned out to be his current girlfriend.
  7. Minor league dealio, too.
  8. Justin Turner: LA Dodger.
  9. Yeah, I ran into a guy on FB who decared that Rod Carew was a better option for the Mets than Chris Young. What point is being made here?
  10. I'd gobble up Longoria's deal like a hungry hippo.
  11. He did great, Rod Carew told The Post, in a telephone interview Tuesday night, of his work with Young. We took out a lot of thinking. I want him seeing the ball and reacting to the ball. He was concentrating on what we were doing. and Chris is the kind if hitter that wants to pull everything, Carew said. We worked on using his hands more instead of trying to muscle the ball. On tracking the ball. And Young was all... If you focus more on your average, the power will always be there, he said. If youre squaring the ball up more consistently, the power will come. and ?Consistent in my eyes is .280 and up. Its what pops in my head, he said. It means you dont have long slumps, you beat out some grounders and you hit all types of balls to all fields to keep yourself out of trouble. http://nypost.com/2014/02/04/chris-young-changes-things-up-in-quest-for-consistency/
  12. Shooting wildly here: Vladimir Guerrero
  13. Can't find Chris Young's thread. Article today says he sought out Rod F. Carew this offseason and spent a month working with him on his hitting game. Great. But the real curiosity here is that Young is a classic fly ball hitter and Carew one of history's great slap hitters. Will instruction from Carew augment or undermine Young's game? 14. Reviewing the Rauch Scorecard, I realized one can go as high as 96 with him, but some of it is disputable. Playing a long career, it gives a guy a chance to score multiple times in hair and beard categories. Perhaps I should just give a base score with additional points for variations. I also treat the Expats as two different teams. Naturally, he scores big in bigness. But come on, there's got to be a three-figure guy out there. I could probably give him points for a full sleeve of tatts (by now, anyhow) but he's not quite there and I've graded too generously as it is. 16. I wouldn't begrudge you awarding a bonus there or altering the formula a bit as long as it stays within the spirit of the thing. I counted Montreal and Washington separately for Rauch.
  17. Edgardo to coach in Mets system this year, as per Adam Rubin.
  18. Just ran Jon Rauch through the machine, and he ranks a clean 87. He maybe presents a meathead, but character-wise, he's pretty much profiles as a dude. He took a lot of the crap sitting down from that twitter troll that got arrested, when you might've thought a guy like him would level a town or two. Can't say much about his marriage, but the neck tatt is supposedly a tribute to his wife and her fight with cancer. Worst I could find about him is that he gave Jeff Pearlman the cold shoulder. That'll happen. Jon Rauch, you're alright with me.
  19. It seems the Twinks are playing the game the same way the Mets are --- laying back and hoping Drew will fall into their laps, while playing it like they don't care one way or the other. Man, the modern MLB GM has to be a little like the Fonz.
  20. Kristie Ackert ?@AckertNYDN 4m #Mets source says no offer on the table for Stephen Drew at this time. I haven't heard the clip, but perhaps it's just poorly phrased wishful thinking/pot stirring by Francesa. It's the sort of thing he usually gets right, though.
  21. Mets blog on Francesa report: http://metsblog.com/mets-rumors/stephen-drew/stephen-drew-rumors-red-sox-make-a-two-year-offer/ Mets made an offer, as did Red Sox February 4th, 2014 2:25 pm The Mets made an offer to free-agent SS Stephen Drew and continue to negotiate over the length of the deal, WFANs Mike Francesa said on air Tuesday (Brender, Feb. 4). 5:00 am: MLB Networks Peter Gammons said Tuesday that he believes Drew will eventually sign with the Mets. (What? Not Beirut?) Last week, Sandy Alderson said hes continuing to monitor Drews situation, but signing the shortstop remains unlikely (DiComo, Jan. 29). It was reported late Tuesday that the Red Sox made a two-year offer to Drew (Bowden, Feb. 3). However, according to Gammons, Boston is asking Drew to essentially be a utility infielder, playing shortstop, third and second base. Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer The way I understand it, Drew is still insisting on a three- or four-year deal, and no team (including the Mets) seems to want to go there. The Blue Jays, As and Twins are also reportedly interested (Martino, Jan. 27, Heyman, Jan. 28), so maybe he still feels he has leverage. Hes reportedly willing to play multiple positions, but I assume that is simply a way to get more teams involved. In the end, I have to think hed prefer to be a starting shortstop, which is something the Mets can offer him that Boston cannot. The Blue Jays have Jose Reyes and Houston has a bright, up-and-coming prospect ready to take over. The As have Nick Punto and Jed Lowrie. So, again, like I said months ago, the Twins and Mets may end up Drews best option
  22. Are you doubting WFAN's leading broadcastuh?
  23. Twitter just blew up with reports from King Cotton that the Mets have an offer to Drew on the table.
  24. Non-baseball players who are, in spirit, lunkhead relievers: Christian Bale Chris Christie Li'l John Armand Assante John Daly Pete Best.
  25. I've got to think cheap but original programming can be so do-able with an iota of creativity. But we don't demand it. We watch SNY or YES or MSG out of brand loyalty. And they are dubious that ratings would spike if they put something better on than the fiftieth evergreen interview with the guy who knows where to stand to catch homers during batting practice, or the 99th rebroadcast of the Matt Franco game. Seriously, how expensive could JCL's notion of rebroadcasting old games with MST3000 commentary be? Not a lot, but who cares? I could fill out a 24-hour schedule in 10 minutes, but if the non-game-broadcast programming costs more than it takes to keep the lights on, I doubt they'd be interested. I'm not sure the current culture suggests they should. But someday, one of these networks is going to outflank the competition and put on an innovative low-budget thing, and it'll be a big hit despite being only kind of good and stay a hit after it quickly grows tired.
