  1. You want intrigue, here's your intrigue: Ken Rosenthal (citing multiple sources): Mets made higher offer to Balfour than Tampa. Mike Puma (quoting a Mets source): Mets made lesser offer to Balfour than Tampa. Adam Rubin (citing an "ultra-reliable" Mets source [you gonna take that, Puma?!]): Mets made the same offer to Balfour Tampa made. That's DRAMA! wtf? Is Rubin like well, I can't say they bid higher, and I can't say they bid lower, hmm.... and then he kinda mocks the contradictory reports. I don't know where you're finding ambiguity. Rubin asserts what he asserts pretty clearly. I know you dislike the dude, but I'm not sure at all what you're reading.
  2. And perhaps indeed write to WOR, who likely would have less than no clue.

  4. Broken link fixed, but you ain't missing much. The writer is... some guy.
  5. Stupid, ridiculous hyperbolic headline of the day: New York Mets Failure to Land Grant Balfour Exposes Huge Problem
  6. I always forget that Tekulve isn't dead. I never conflated him and Quisenberry during their careers. But when one died, my mind somehow buried both.
  7. Gwreck would be devastated, not disappointed.
  8. I would guess that, like Gary Carter in the Mets cap, there's just too much Chicago-based money available to allow yourself to be represented as a Brave in perpetuity. Hey, remember when Roger Clemens said that he would refuse to show up to his own HoF induction ceremony if he had anything other than a Yankee logo on his plaque?
  9. Maddux? Strange.
  10. Wilpon's interference can be gleaned from the bits of breakfast cereal spotted around the radio booth.
  11. Revenues factoring into payroll does not mean payroll drives ticket prices.
  12. Mets ticket prices haven't really crept up in recent years, but inched down, as demand has diminished.
  13. Traded for Jerry Blevins, signed Nate McClouth, traded for Doug Fister(!), replaced Davey Johnson with Matt Williams, and hope for full healthy seasons from their two prodigies.
  14. Listing I saw said they were at 66-1, after being at 75-1 at the start of the offseason.
  15. See you at Hooters.
  16. Moving to Norfolk. Firing Joe Maddon after uncovering some unseemly behavior. Signed some Cuban supastar. Started a regional sports network and/or signed a cooperative deal with Sheffield Wednesday or something corporate.
  17. Certainly don't want to be married to your bullpen extras. Know what would be a classy gesture? For him to legally change his name to "Ardsma" before he retires, and so restore alphabetic supremacy to Hank Aaron.
  18. Also, has any Met ever had a shorter run as closer. Fired after one day!
  19. I liked him. I like guys who are just passing through, bounce between the bigs and AAA, have passed through a waiver or two, but don't give a shit about decorum, and speak and carry themselves and demand respect like big leaguers, even if the back of their baseball card says, "Well, sometimes."
  20. David Aardsma, first man in baseball history alphabetically if not chronologically and sadly, not qualitatively is now an Indian (a minor-tribe Indian, anyhow). Pause now and recall him as he was.
  21. Juan Lagares has been named "Top Dominican Rookie", according to a panel of Dominican sportswriters. Juan is the first Met to receive the honor. Or the eighth. I'm not sure.
  22. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Okay. HLR isn't a stat. But isn't calling a reliever an HLR kind of like calling a batter a clutch hitter? No, because it designates how and when he's used, rather than how he effectively performs. It's more like calling a batter a pinch hitter.
  23. Ash going back to 1984 for Woody's redemption. Vic Sage wrote: But i thought we HAD stopped, pretty much. Sounds to me like a meaningful handful of youse COULDN'T HELP YOURSELVES.
  24. The Royals are an interesting test case --- no big ticket items, but a lot of guys between $3 million and $13 million. A willingness unusual for teams in their position to spend $4 million on supporting players instead of finding a rookie or a pre-arbitration guy that may be just as good but isn't as field-proven. Usually I think that's a poor use of money, unless you have it burn, but we'll see.
  25. Wouldn't it be grate if the language that evolved (or devolved) from "stopper" to "closer" started evolving further, moving the zeitgeist from "closer" to "high-leverage reliever," and then actual usage started reflecting the changing language? Wouldn't it be great if the Mets were ahead of the curve in that department?
