  1. Nice to see Wright not chasing away. Whacks a ball but gets robbed by Crawford.
  2. So the dying family member turned out to be Lagares' aunt, who raised him. So effectively, he was dealing with a dying mother this week. Maybe we can give Terry a little bit of a break.
  3. Puig turns an excellent pitch into a single.
  4. The nuts and bolts stuff of announcing, reading the lineup or stat lines, continues to be occasionally flummoxing to Keith.
  5. Yazzy Puig: co-National League Player of the Week. This is pretty much when the the Fire Mattingly bandwagon got heated up last year.
  6. Seriously. Mrs. Drew is ECSTATIC.
  7. Wilmer back to work, anyhow.
  8. Buying off a big leaguer with a tee shirt is one thing, but a Hall of Famer? [fimg=350:e5ukgwq9]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BoGdEU3CYAARWaF.jpg[/fimg:e5ukgwq9] [fimg=350:e5ukgwq9]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BoGAHeYIMAAZ8H8.jpg[/fimg:e5ukgwq9] I like how Lucas is one step inside a Mets executive's doorway. >>>>> "Put this on, smile, and shut up." >>> "Is this meant to imply that..." >>>>> "Cheryl, get me Allan Dykstra on the line..." >>> "All right, I'm putting it on. I'm smiling."
  9. Willie continues to feel sorry for Willie. I like Willie. Makes me feel even worse that he seems so clueless.
  10. Well, that was... long. What's next?
  11. Mike Hessman slugs his 400th minor league homer, fifth on the all-time list. He also has 14 homers in MLB play, and six more for NPB's Orix Buffalo in Japan.
  12. Pretty funny that the hat still has the giveaway sponsor on it.
  13. If that photo represents the design accurately, it looks like the head doesn't bobble, but the hat.
  14. On May 24, the Akron Aeros will be hosting a Devo Bobblehead Night. Come early, as supplies are limited, with Devo bobbleheads going to the first 1,000 patrons through the turnstiles. Mark Mothersbaugh will be in attendance, with a significant outlay from each ticket going to the family of late-Devo member Bob Casale. I like that the band's image was sort of cloney, so you don't really have to distinguish which Devo guy that is. Anyhow, it's part of a series of four Akron-themed "Rock 'n' Bobble" giveaways that the Rubber Ducks are staging this season, to be followed later in the season by Akron legends Joe Walsh (James Gang), Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) and the Black Keys. Not a bad legacy for a boring, boring town. I bet Pere Ubu is PISSED to be left out, though. Note that the team is now the Rubber Ducks, and no longer the Aeros. When did that happen? It would be cool if the players wore caps and helmets designed in the style of the energy hats, but that may be a bridge too far.
  15. Metly speculation is that Montero may have been tipping his pitches in the start against the Yankees. My further speculation suggests that, with no runs, he wasn't going to win anyhow. Jake deGrom still a Met as of this hour.
  16. Next two big prospects rolling out of Cuba: 1) Alfredo Despaigne Bulky 27-year-old corner outfielder slugger with pure power 2) Finger-sign flashing switch-hitting outfielder Daniel Carbonell. If there's anything Cuban that MLB teams love more than slugging corner outfielders, it's artificial market controls, so they have some boring, wonky limit as to what a team can spend on international free agents, but it doesn't apply to guys 23 and under, so the Yankees are expected to be all-in on 23-year-old Carbonell. More here.
  17. I was guessing it was a medicinal tray. Griffith Stadium, famous for having that row of four slender rowhouses in center field full of families who refused to sell their house, so the ballpark had to be built around them. [fimg=800:p69hwoih]http://deadballbaseball.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/griffithhistorypressblog.net_.jpg[/fimg:p69hwoih]
  18. I'm guessing Huggins is behind the cops. And that's probably rookie manager and future Hall of Famer Bucky Harris at right. This would be from the only MLB championship season in Senators (or Washington, DC) history.
  19. I don't think the goal is to win a National Book Award, ceets. Fill up 200 pages, make sure at least 50% of that is slime, and cash checks. Dennis Rodman's As Bad as I Wanna Be could have been called As Bad as I Wanna Write. It was terrible. They had to change the font size regularly to keep people moving and to fill enough space to justify calling it a book. But ka-ching! It's not about literary merit. Clotheslines air clean laundry.
  20. The world has a lot of "actual writers' who would love to get actually paid. If Samuels has a book contract, it'll take him about 10 seconds to find a collaborator.
  21. This amazing photo comes from the Times. [fimg=800]http://static01.nyt.com/images/2014/05/16/upshot/17UP-BABE/17UP-BABE-superJumbo.jpg[/fimg] It's from 90 years ago, May 16, and it shows the greatest hitter ever with birds circling his head. Ruth pulled a move Pete Reiser would become known for a generation later, running full steam into a concrete barrier. Reports have him out cold for five minutes, treated for his unconsiousness in the classic Bugs Bunny fashion, with a bucket of cold water to the face. Upon wakening, Ruth refused to be removed from the lineup, and somehow Miller Huggins acceded. And of course he got two more hits in the game. Also notable is that the section where he has collapsed is largely populated by African-American fans. The report says that a teenaged Buck Leonard is almost certainly in attendance, watching his first ever major league game. Click the photo to embiggen!
  22. I don't understand how reports of the book being pitched means there likely isn't really much to put in the book. A pitch doesn't mean the manuscript is or isn't finished. And it doesn't mean there is or isn't a ton of filthy filthy filth to put in a manuscript. The reports haven't broken there because Samuels put out a press release that he has a pitch but no book. It's New York, center of the publishing industry, with a lot of gossip, and a handful of trade publications reporting on what's being circulated.
  23. Chubbier than the Seo I remember too. Roger McDowell, fashion tip: Never wear accessories funnier than you are.
  24. Sleeping on it, though, I guess there's a possibility that he had a role in Piazza's alleged procurement chain. It would seemingly be stupid for a jocko to use a member of the club to help him get his juice, but nobody ever said jocks were smart. And maybe Piazza knew all the dirt about Samuels, so he thought it could keep him quiet. Now that Samuels' dirt is out in the open, any leverage folks had on him is gone. He may not have a coke can full of syringes --- then again, he might --- but the BBWAA has sure made it clear that their standard of evidence is smaller than any court. But what an enormous skeleton in the closet this guy represents to the organization as they try to move on. Wilpon probably wishes he had found a way to keep him getting paid.
  25. I would expect he'd have more juice on the players that are no longer there than on the management that is. But I wouldn't be surprised by a revelation that he found an empty winstrol vial or two at the bottom of Hundley's locker, turned them over to Steve Phillips, and NOTHING HAPPENED.
