  1. "Actually, it encouraged me to come here," 60-year-old Ben Itri told the Daily News. "I figured once they got sick they tried to clean the place and make sure they cleaned all of the germs. So actually after I read that, this was the first place I had to come: that's my theory. We will verify that after the game." Ben Itri, I'm afraid you've got a problem.
  2. Don't quote me by name, but I heard he spit on Duda's burger.
  3. One thing worth considering is that most everybody does not have a major league career to think about. Some will pitch in college, few will will be drafted, fewer still will make the big leagues, and a gilded and blessed few among those have a chance to be the next Nolan Ryan.* So we're talking about protecting their careers, but pitching in the high school playoffs may have been the pinnacle of this kid's career. *And who here would be shocked if you heard that Nolan Ryan had a 194-pitch day (or three) in high school?
  4. It's hard to define when a closer strategy "works." What save percentage do you demand to see to validate the manager's choice? 80%? 85%? Or, since not all save situations are equal (one-run-lead-bases-loaded-no-out-in-the-sixth and three-run-lead-bases-empty-two-out-in-the-ninth being the most extreme examples), do you demand a subtler metric? It strikes me that saves blown by secondary figures in the earlier innings help obscure the argument. Such failures do not tend reflect on the manager with the standard designated-closer strategy, but they would on a manager that uses multiple players in save situations because those men blowing it in the earlier innings are also part of the mix of potential finishers.
  5. Josh Edgin is official. Mets bulk up on lefties just in time for... the Nats, who are pretty righthanded-heavy with Harper on the DL.
  6. Is it possible that everyone can agree that something is over-rated? Isn't this a paradox?
  7. Gil was something of a radical in terms of defensive alignment, twice (if I remember correctly) repositioning an infielder to create a four-outfielder alignment against Frank Robinson. I'm pretty sure he never positioned his firstbaseman in foul territory, though. That may be a tribute to Keith Hernandez.
  8. What must Valverde be thinking? "How did I wake up this morning with a job? What's that on the back of my neck? Smells uncannily like the breath of Vic Black." Did the Mets really pull a salary dodge on Farnsworth twice?
  9. Ah, the "second lefty." In previous years, it had been Jerry's answer to Jerry's "eighth-inning guy" --- his white whale, his bte noire. Haven't heard the cry for a second lefty much of late.
  10. What and I missing here? Montero and deGrom replace Gee and Germen, so who is replacing Specs?
  11. Met Count Central is predicting Binghamton righthander Cody Satterwhite, currently burning up the Eastern League with a 0.89 ERA in 20 1/3 innings. Cody and Mallory got married in jeans and cowboy boots. 12. Put your faith not in closers and no dread shall you know.
  13. I always associate poor Jackie Smith with wide-open dropsies. This game pretty much ended when Chris Young got thrown out. It's hard to call it the "turning point" when a team trailing by multiple runs loses a baserunner, but the Mets seemed to have put their faith in being clever, rather than good. When that blew up on them, they had nothing.
  14. Ok, you goofball cocky Mets, time to play. Abreu looks bad on a pitch for the first time this season, then gets mad and gets off the interstate.
  15. And that's with 22% more plate appearances than anybody else.
  16. Derek Jeter, putting on a clinic with the 30-foot RBI.
  17. Maybe this is Tanaka's act. Not overwhelming, but no mistakes, either.
  18. Not bad for a guy who looks 16 years old, Montero.
  19. I like you being cocky, Mets, but that doesn't mean you get a pass on brain-thinking. Look at deGrom's mane. We haven't had a Methead that resplendent since Daniel Ray Herrera.
  20. Or, you know, do something crazy stupid.
  21. Light him up like a Roman candle.
  22. See what I mean? Look at that flail!
  23. Does Gardner have a two-handed swing?
  24. There's a Mets rack? They might not have scored, but they smacked him all over in the first.
  25. Wow. You almost get the notion that Yankee management doesn't think of this squad as real Yankees, so they dressed them in fake Yankee hats.
