  1. I thought that he'd be packing it in. Trying instead to make all the NL East stops, south to north.
  2. A fault line in the alleged disconnect between statistical analysis and the art of scouting is said to revolve around old broken-down scouts turning in reports which describe which players have "the good face" --- a designation that since the late seventies has driven many modernizers crazy. Not that there isn't something to be said for the notion that intelligence, charisma, attitude, focus, confidence and resiliency aren't part of a ballplayer's makeup. And certainly people have long thought that they can glean traits such as these from a person's visage. But it all just seemed to stink to high heaven of unscientific guesswork reinforced by an anachronistic priesthood. Well, it looks like somebody has actually tried to turn this all into a science, quantifying the competitive virtues of the athlete's face, and teams are paying big bucks for the results. (The Bucks are paying bucks!) [fimg=350]http://www2.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Anthony+Recker+vvEaSZ28_Ucm.jpg[/fimg] La buena cara? Not so much.
  3. I'm working from the assumption that none of our left-handed batters are an automatic sit against lefties, but my guess is when Granderson sits, it'll be in favor of Mayberry in right, and when Duda sits, it'll be in favor of Mayberry in left and Cuddyer at first. If both Granderson and Duda were to ride pine together, Mayberry would be in right and Campy at first.
  4. Wow. Weird. But I guess a vet or two is what they see as missing. But that bullpen has seemed nearly impermeable the last three years. Rarely's the time I've thought, "You know, what they're missing is a mullet-headed veteran right-handed journeyman.
  5. Are you really advocating den Dekker playing against lefties? As the roster seems to break, he's not even positioned to make the team right now, let alone get reverse-platoon starts.
  6. I think they qualify as a contender now. But the future is unknown.
  7. So, for giggles and shingles, how do you imagine the lineup changes with Tulowitzki? Tulo to third, Wright to fifth, Cuddyer to seventh and d'Arnaud eighth? Or do you think Wright instead gets bumped up to second, and Granderson back down? Grandy leadoff?
  8. The problem there is that he uses "would" when the more honest term is "could" or "might."
  9. There's a lot of harsh going around. I don't think we know the substance of Mazzilli's grand jury testimony. He wasn't called to testify at the trial.
  10. It will be lamentable oversight if the Mets don't build a giveaway day around that poster.
  11. Sucks not to be able to see a full-size version. Great work. Also home of The New York Apollo (1980, and possibly 1981).
  12. What a terrible time for him. With Dilson already having leapfrogged him at the end of last season, and a handful of real infield prospects coming up behind him. Stop going to raves, LJ!
  13. I'm Larry Walker. Sucks to be me. 14. I'm trying to remember who it was that said he just worried about finding hitters. That he could shake a tree and 10 glove guys would fall out. But, if he stumbles as a fielder, and press and fans are getting on the team over his stumbles, that certainly can affect his hitting as well. It can also affect his speech, his driving, and his lovemaking. Confidence is confidence. So, as with Daniel Murphy in a prior age, it's at least somewhat important that he acquits himself respectably as a fielder.
  15. Trying to adapt to the Flores-at-shortstop outlook, which would be a more enjoyable experiment if so many weren't almost rooting for it to fail. I get this encouraging picture of his bat, which references this spirited if realistic defense of his glove. I want to get on board, I do. But I also fear that the toxic mix of growing pains, animated gifs perpetuating him at his worst moments, and a fan base that may largely see his presence as a symbol of organizational failure may lead to a downward spiral of confidence and performance. I also see Terry, as a sort of confidence booster, refusing to replace him for late-inning, save-situation defense (he didn't last year --- not regularly, anyhow), and that maybe backfiring in the presence of one high-profile game-turning error. Interesting to see the "heavy feet" tag used around here (coined by Zvon? MGiM?) is one the scouts have used also.
  16. Most of those guys didn't come in owed a particularly large amount of money. Some signed with the Mets themselves for a nice chunk. Alomar had a solid contract, but not out of whack with where his career was. The Mets have done a mostly good job of not taking on other teams' bloated contracts at full freight. Most notable exceptions I can think of are Mo Vaughn and Jeromy Burnitz. Carlos Delgado too. I mostly doubt this deal goes down at all. If it does, I feel confident that it won't be at full freight.
  17. Folks out there with mixed feelings. If Piazza gets in this year, induction weekend will conflict with the Heart concert.
  18. Nothing against John Shmutz, but... there's about eight guys outside looking in that shine brighter to me. [list:1xqajnfn]98.0 - P. Martinez 98.0 - R. Johnson 88.2 - Smoltz 84.3 - Biggio 78.4 - Piazza 70.6 - Bagwell 68.6 - Raines 56.9 - Schilling 43.1 - Mussina 39.2 - Bonds 37.3 - Clemens 25.5 - E. Walker - 3.9 - Sosa 2.0 - Garciaparra 2.0 - Pete Rose (Write-In)[/list:u:1xqajnfn] And how about Sosa? Six hunnert homers sure doesn't buy what it used to.
  19. Not [fimg=20:34qvtumd]http://media.jrn.com/images/HorseLogo.png[/fimg:34qvtumd]kewel[fimg=20:34qvtumd]http://media.jrn.com/images/HorseLogo.png[/fimg:34qvtumd] enough for the critical zeitgeist. Aren't now and weren't then. They'll get their due eventually, but the panel needs to realize that time keeps on slipping into the future.
  20. The notion that "I see 10 worthwhile players, but I will withhold voting for 10, because I only want to see three get in at a time," doesn't hold up logically. If everyone voted that way, there'd be one or zero inducted. Trust the process or agitate to change the process. Don't war with yourself and vote against your own perspective and better judgment. That p&bj is exactly what's being polled and what the writers allegedly bring to the process.
  21. "People always tell me, 'You know, if this baseball thing doesn't work out, you can move to Vegas'." That's, um, not a little foreboding, considering that's exactly where failed Mets end up moving.
  22. Right from the tree, baby. [youtube:25vin1mp]Qd5ag754UAQ[/youtube:25vin1mp]

  24. So, um, Steve Miller Band!
  25. Meanwhile, more significant VWL action has Wilmer Flores stroking it to the tune of .338 / .378 / .584 / .964 with 6 home runs and 16 RBIs in 19 games for the Bravos of Margarita.
