  1. Thanks for reminding me of that. His 1-8 1981 totally overwhelmed my memory and blotted out his start in 1982. His control was atrocious, particular compared to what it had previously been.
  2. Wow. Five authentic memories. lol-ing. After Edgin got farmed out at the end of camp, he was in line to become the elusive "second lefty," behind Rice. He got rocked in four of his five appearances, and Edgin started looking a lot better, surpassing our man Lannan, and then Rice. Eveland stepped up and became lefty number two. And it was a long season minor-leaguing and rehabbing for Long Beach's own. He also missed a good chunk of the summer due to a "personal matter" --- the nature of which I'm not sure ever came to light.
  3. John Lannan has signed a minor league deal to become a Colorado Something. You may find this hard to believe, but he pitched five games for the 2014 Mets. Photo evidence confirms this. I dare you to provide an authentic John Lannan memory.
  4. The Matt Kemp deal has reportedly hit a snag, as the Padres' physical has supposedly revealed that he is suffering from arthritis in both hips. It's a big snag, as the Phillies are in the mix too, as the Dodgers already sent one of the players they got in the trade, Zach Eflin, on to Philadelphia, so you can't just undo it. This might go to the league, who I imagine would insist that Dodgers throw some hip insurance money at San Diego.
  5. If he wanted Mets stuff, he should have just called his brother Matt.
  6. Murphy may not be a superlative hitter by third base standards, but the seeming back-of-the-baseball-card certainty he brings probably has a value. Somebody (the Mets!) once traded for Brian F. Schneider. Countering Montero with Rain Lara is good thinking. Ynoa good trade chip when you spot one.
  7. It's a shame we never saw even a shadow of that Randy Jones pitching for the Mets. Had somebody massaged his innings while he was young, like they would today, he might have stayed healthy enough to produce a Halladay of a career.
  8. No, I'm not arguing semantics. Man, you're off the rails.
  9. I'm still missing the "Oh shit" part. There's no nuance between "He couldn't hit" and "He did hit." Please don't try and suggest the inability to reconcile the irreconcilable is on other people. We're not dumb here. You didn't write, "the statistical measurement 'hits' at a good enough rate to be ready to be a major league 2Bman." You wrote, "Given that he couldn't hit... ." It's really easy to say, "Yeah, I guess I overstated that." I more or less agree with you beyond that.
  10. I don't know. Murphy may have one year of control, but Crawford has only two. Murphy will be 30 and has a 109 career OPS+. Crawford will be 28 and has a 91. I like him, but I think, as assets, they're closer than the difference Montero represents, to me.
  11. Ceetar wrote: when they're opinions formed on actual statistics (And Frayed Knot said similar things in his appraisal too, so it's not like I'm an oddball here) they're bogus. But they're not formed on actual statistics. And that's my only point, Johnny Sarcastico. I wouldn't throw him in the deep end either. He's 20, and the team has a qualified second baseman. But it's just not true to assert that he couldn't hit in his limited showing. It's perfectly OK to say "Oh, shit, I was off there. I still wouldn't hand him a job, considering his age and experience, but he acquitted himself perfectly fine in his big league opportunity, brief as it was." Because that's pretty much what you're saying, minus the "Oh shit" part.
  12. Better be a meaningful prospect. Montero's more than a throw-in. I don't like Crawford that much necessarily.
  13. Frayed Knot wrote: Padres get: Wil Myers, OF (from TB) Last time a Rookie of the Year got dealt so shortly after winning the award: Pat Zachry.
  14. There's a reason he does design and I, um, don't. [fimg=400:cc7io2ty]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/metsholiday.jpg[/fimg:cc7io2ty] Oh, well. I guess I can say that I gave it the Binghamton try.
  15. You think that's a deal that the Giants would want? Do you think it'd take a throw-in? I like Crawford a lot.
  16. How did LA not get in on that?
  17. Ceetar wrote: you're just arguing to argue. I like to think I'm advocating for facts.
  18. Ceetar wrote: Well, small sample and all. Interesting that it's a meaningful sample when you conclude that he didn't hit, but it's too small when that is demonstrated to be untrue. and it was .625 before he had 1 good game at the end and then didn't play again. The bottom line is the bottom line. (Did he get hurt? I'm blanking.) Yes. Hurt his quad. He did hit the ball hard. Nice solid contact when he connected, which is what boosted the SLG. You say the opposite above. But he didn't hit it enough. It wasn't an overall good performance. Extrapolated for 162 games, that's 27 homers and 99 RBI. What does enough look like? Not to say I wasn't very encouraged by what I saw though. Solid contact, and the ability to draw walks. Didn't embarrass himself as a 20 year old. Again, you say above that he didn't hit at all. Very encouraging. Definitely not ready as I see it. Definitely? You didn't even recall that he got hurt? How can anybody be definite? Wouldn't be surprised if he only needs another 20-30 games though... How do you get from definitely not ready to possibly needing only 20-30 games? I don't know what he is. I just disagree that he didn't hit at all. He did, certainly.
  19. Ceetar wrote: Given that he couldn't hit in his limited showing last year, and hasn't played at AAA at all, yeah, this season is a stretch. Outhit Flores. Outhit Campbell. Outhit Brown. Outhit den Dekker. Heck, going by his rates, he outhit a bunch of starters --- Lagares, Young, Tejada, and Wright (WRIGHT!) --- so I wouldn't conclude at all that he couldn't hit. He hit the ball hard. A .710 from a 20-year-old is sweet.
  20. I see Dilson Herrera as a starting second baseman on a good team. I'm struggling over whether or not to infer the words "this season" in this statement. The question seemed to be talking about the present status.
  21. Hints of (a) lineup shuffling, and ( saving Matt Harvey for the home opener coming from Met circles (Terry). 22. Cuba may certainly be torturing and repressing at a higher rate, but it doesn't make what the US does at the southeastern end of the island any less real.
  23. Pretty cool how that post reads as almost perfectly justified.
  24. Perhaps the menorah should slope downward from the center like the NYC skyline.
  25. Nicely played. You can use garland bunting, or gold ribbon bunting, in place of the bridge.
