Brian Bannister, pitcher and sabermetrician, turning into a scout and analyst. Looks better on your calling card than "Traded for a Cold-Blooded Killer."

Not quite certain I understand. 1. Am I to understand the Mets are trading Gee to free up room and salary to add James Shields? 2. Or is it that the Giants don't want to trade for Gee until they know Shields is no longer an option for them? 3. Or perhaps, the Mets and Giants are close, but both sides are niggling on the deal, and hoping the ultimate signing of Shields will clarify for both just what a Gee is worth. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN, SHERMAN?!

I'm so entitled, I demand the Mets consummate deals I wouldn't even like ten minutes after they happened.

Late of the Mets' third base line, Razor Shines stays in the Dodger system to take over the Tulsa Drillers. Five-game Mets infielder and unfortunate former Diamondback manager Al Pedrique is bringing new blood to the Trenton Thunder. Always with his heart on his sleeve, and still seemingly believing that he has a great track record of making winning happen, Willie Randolph is disappointed that he has not been rehired by the Yankees. Fresh off of a tour of Japan with the Rakuten Golden Eagles, Zach Lutz its jumping the Sea of Japan to join South Korea's Doosan Bears.

I don't get that "lying" business at all. The Mets are apparently now lying even when nobody from the Mets is saying anything.

Certainly pretty valuable.

Desmond is a little bit of fool's gold, isn't he? I mean, 24 homers from a shortstop is great, but he's not doing much else if his OPS+ is 103. Flores can do that, I think. Pretty good glove, though I wouldn't say it's necessarily better than Tejada's. Good player, but not for one year at those prices.

That's something funny about veteran relievers. They come in to dark metal, strut the mound area like panthers, flex their muscles after firing a a high fastball past the first batter, but... the radar gun says 91. I'm wondering who they're fooling, and then I look around, and, well, they're fooling everybody. Trevor Hoffman was running up to 88% bravado by the end.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: He hit a big grand slam for the Mets. That's really about it. It's nice at least that he had that one big moment. Most short-term players never manage to get that. You know, you're right. Hitting a granny in his one Mets homer is close enough. That may have been about 105% of his Mets value contributed in one swing right there.

"I'm building a great organization and people are going to overpay me for my assets." --- S. Alderson

Released by the Mets way back on May 26, but never officially moved on to pastos mas verderos until this week when he signed a minor league deal with San Diego.

Taylor Teagarden signs a minor league deal with the Cubs, leaving his Mets destiny unfulfilled. Wasn't he supposed to hit a game-winning ninth-inning homer off an elite closer somewhere in there?

That's a great story.

Pete was given a "Longtime Terrific Service Award" or some such thing they announce for employees supposedly too many degrees removed from the competition to qualify for the Mets Hall. It's the same reward I believe they recognized Bob Mandt and Jane Jarvis with.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: My bit was fun inasmuch as being asked to fill 2 minutes got me to thinking about having something to say: I looked into what was going on with the uni-number distributions -- i.e.: multiple first-time issues, primarily of high digits -- and came up with a theory that mirrors evolution of the game itself. Deets on the neglected web site. mbtn.net I liked that essay, and it's good to see the action pick up at mbtn. (You've got a typo in the word "traditional" in the third-to-last paragraph.)

But I think that's the point. The electorate was less restrained this time, not more.

Anybody who boos Flores on opening day gets such a noogie.

Any dispatches from QBC?

You can tell how great Pete Flynn was by comparing his work at Shea to his successors' work at Citi. IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE!
