I'm an infielder with high averages and first-round pedigree, but questions on whether I'll get over my errorly ways. Nonetheless, I arrived like a comet in the bigs, hitting well for a guy with seven trips to the plate. I've got more to prove in seventeen, and I need an opportunity in which to do it. And that opportunity has to come before that damned Rosario arrives and takes it from me. How do you see this playing out? Jeff Walters is food for thought for all the Marcos Molinas who got hopeful when added to the mets 40-man. Jeff had a fantastic year in Binghamton, was added, got hurt, got DFA'd, and then got added again the year after. But now departs having never tasted a big league buffet spread. (You haven't lived until.) He departs with what is easily the Binghamton Mets record of 38 saves. And as the Binghamton Mets are no longer, I guess that's a record he never lose. And while he never got called to the bigs, he sure had a big league mullet. Sorry to see Jon make his second departure while this thread noting his original departure is still active, and for him to depart as something of a villain. I note above that he was part of a string of seven different opening day pitchers taking the bump in seven years. Unless a situation develops causing the Mets to switch from Syndergaard to Harvey, it'll be eight in eight years.
-
That's a cromulent move, especially if you're the Yankees, whose second best starter might be seventh or eighth on the Mets' current depth chart. It would also leave Kelly Johnson as the last remaining unsigned 2016 Met.

A bunch of munny for facility improvements has been promised by St. Lucie, but it's not been without the typical controversy that you get when it comes to public financing of ballparks. http://archive.tcpalm.com/news/shaping-our-future/growth/analysis-st-lucies-60-million-stadium-deal-with-the-new-york-mets-a-very-smart-move-328246e2-1f17-67-379450751.html http://archive.tcpalm.com/opinion/editorials/st-lucie-county-needs-to-step-up-to-plate-and-justify-tradition-field-deal-331075ed-e7c5-1a23-e053-0-380155871.html http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-announce-55m-tradition-field-renovations-article-1.2874057

I'm not well-versed in all things MFY, but the chances are 100% that if I see Randy Levine's name in a headline, there will be a stupid comment from him within the article. Also, he's not the owner, and he's not the GM. What exactly does he do? And why should we care what he has to say? It's interesting question for any franchise. Who is the president and what does he do when he is not the owner and chairman of the board? I guess he's usually a guy who steps in and "oversees operations" when the owner is (a) old, ( aloof, or © forced to cease being and owner/operator due to conflict of interest or suspension. I guess they oversee all the management that's not about managing player personnel. Marketing, finance, public relations, infrastructure, community outreach, but that again triggers the question, "Why would Levine be commenting about Betances?" He should presumably be giving Cashman a budget and then mostly washing his hands of player personnel and contracts.

The catching depth chart probably looks something like this: New York Travis d'Arnaud René Rivera Las Vegas Kevin Plawecki Xorge Carrillo Binghamton Tomás Nido Colton Plaia St. Lucie Jeff Glenn Patrick Mazeika Columbia Natanael Ramos Brandon Brosher Glenn could move up to Las Vegas quickly if he proves he's healthy, or get a quick release if not, but he starting job in St. Lucie is probably soon to be Mazeika's. The most advanced of those waiting for the short season league or for a spot to open up include Anthony Dimino, Tyler Moore, José Garcia, and José Maria. Look for Dimino to appear in-full season A-ball pretty soon, as his bat was way ahead of the others last year, slugging his way through Kingsport and Brooklyn.

Wouldn't Levine, as president of the Yankees, presumably be making well more than a typical astronaut? I'll hang up now and listen to your answer.

The broader reality is that a pitcher has to win at least one game of Russian Roulette with his health before what's left of him ever gets a chance to see what free agency looks like. And there's every chance Matt Harvey (for instance) won't be worth nearly as much at 30 as he would have been at 24 or 26 had he been allowed to negotiate in a fair market.

Hey, guys. I'm 2011 draftee Xorge Carrillo. That's two r's and two l's. And one X. For eXceptional baseball. This is my second big league camp and I'm feeling like I'm fourth on the organizational depth chart. Maybe fifth, if Jeff Glenn finds his way back from a lost year. But I don't see Jeff hanging around big league camp, so ha. I spent most of last year at Bingo, but peeked in on Las Vegas. I've played some damn fine winter ball for Mexicali and I'm hoping to carry that over to some spring success in the WBC. But what's my summer going to look like? 'Cuz I'd like to peek in on New York. We wouldn't want to miss the all-important spring training number assignments. Unfortunately, while these designations are thrilling in and of themselves, we are robbed of some of the extra drama of seeing who gets a low-ish assignment. The answer is ... almost nobody. Since there are no new players brought in on major league assignments, no obligations have been felt by the equipment staff to dress most of these guys like major leaguers. Not even top draft choices like Cecchini or Smith have escaped the cross of the big number The big winner here is Ben Rowen, given the relative jewel among non-roster signees in a more-or-less viable 46. Also worth noting is Josh Smoker, who took the field in 58 and 59 last year, but now switches to 49. He takes that baby off of Jon Niese, threatening to turn it from the Mark of Armando into a designated lefthanded pitcher number. Previous portsiders to take that number out for a ride include Felix Heredia and Joe Crawford. I'm pretty sure veteran non-roster invitees Xorge Carrillo and Travis Taijeron got the same numbers they got last spring. Big numbers are tough, but continuity is nice. It means, among other things, that they remember you. NL East Enemies: 2017 Philadelphia Phillies

The clubhouse down in Clearwater has added more moving words from Philadelphia heroes to greet and inspire young Phillie hopefuls. -
Or they can pick up the option just to shop him around. That always works out!

The weird part wasn't that I was better than most expected last season. That certainly was good. The weird part is that I kept getting better as the season progressed. Now I'm in my walk year, with the team carrying a second starting shortstop to use as a utility player, and 2-3 shortstop prospects and one uber prospect are pushing at me from below. All that competition plus a little offseason chance to rest up and recover from my injuries could make me ... better? In 2017? Really? What do you think? The one thing I remember about Santiago is that he was sent down, cleared waivers, and then endured an extended DL assignment in the minors based on an injury sustained while on the big league roster, which kind of screwed him out of the big league pay he'd've gotten. And before you ask, no, I'm not sure that isn't actually a misplaced José Parra memory. I conflate.

Amed Rosario, as shown in this nice Times piece, waiting to get turned into a tarjeta de béisbol.

80% of that comes from his Wikipedia page, but yeah, he always struck me as one of the more star-crossed Mets, so his story has stuck with me, in a similar way to Sammy Khalifa's sticking with Coo.

Both correct. Like the guy ahead of him on the list, Roberts short-circuited his career with PEDs. That guy had a lot of drama for a parts-of-five-seasons career. And not all of it was his fault. After coming through the system as the last of the high-end pitching prospects of the 1990s Mets, he got absolutely raked in his only big league start, coming right in the midst of a playoff hunt. Basically got consigned forever to bullpen duty after the trauma of that one start. Was utterly fantastic through the first two months of 2002, pitching out of the bullpen with a nearly invisible ERA. After his first bad outing of that season, pow, he gets put on the disabled list in one of those "it's nothing" assignments that portends the beginning of the end. Newsday lists him as one of seven Mets actively using marijuana, shortly after teammate Mark Corey has a terrifying brain seizure after smoking some of Tony Torasco's shit in a parking lot. Remember when Newsday did investigative work? That minor issue that interrupted his season? That was apparently a torn rotator cuff that took too damn long to diagnose. He missed most of the second half of 2002 and his career was now looking like a runaway train heading to Craig Swan City. On top of that, Newsday comes out with a shot of him going down on a bong. It turns out, that bong shot was part of an extortion plot by an ex-girlfriend. Helpful hint to all gold-diggers: wait until the guy is making real money. Diagnosis and rehab plans go back and forth and most of 2003 is lost for the guy as well. He doesn't appear until September and plans for surgery on the cuff for the off-season. Fuck it. He decides NOT to have surgery in the off-season, putting him at odds with the team. He predictably sucks it up at the start of 2004 before landing, again, on the disabled list. He plans to finally have his surgery in mid-May. The Mets, pissed that he missed the opportunity to go through this in the off-season, are fuming. In an ugly-assed bit of vindication, with Roberts wearing a gown and minutes from undergoing surgery, the Mets DFA him, disqualifying him from getting the operation. Confronted by the MLBPA that that sort of dastardliness is not really allowed, the Mets relent, and he gets the procedure a few weeks later. He becomes a free agent at the end of the year, but amazingly, signs a minor league deal with the Mets(!), who are now under new management of Omar Minaya, which presumably washes away some of the bad blood with the previous adminsitration. Roberts fails to make the team out of spring training ... and fails a PED test. After serving his ridiculously short 15-day suspension, the Mets release him. Roberts signs a minor league deal with the Yankees, for whom the sort of drama he brings is a typical workday. He fails to impress with the AA Trenton Thunder and ultimately retires without returning to the bigs with another team, qualifying as a career Met, very much representing the black hat era in a nutshell. And here's our list of career Mets, interspersed with active players, who would qualify if they retired today. 1. Ed Kranepool, of, 1b, ph, 1962-1979: 18 seasons David Wright: 13 seasons 2. It Cuts Like a Knife: Injuries and Rehab in 2017
Edgy MD replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
TransMonk wrote: If he was being counted on the the ace or even the number two, I would agree that he was definitely not that guy yet pre-injury, but I'd be thrilled to have those stats from a fifth starter. The thing is, after being that guy two years ago, and being two years in the wasteland without throwing a pitch, and with him seemingly already on a tight innings ratio (Terry was talking 25 starts limited to five innings per, and that's the upside!), it would seem to be a far better ambition to invest hopes in Gsellman. I mean, 125 innings as a starter at 3.50 ERA. I imagine that's somewhere between 1.1 and 1.5 fWAR. And that's the upside? And yeah, Centerfield has a pretty good description of him above. I likened him to Pelfrey, getting ahead of batters and then forever wasting two pitches away. I'm considering anything the Mets get from him as a bonus. And I'll certainly congratulate him if he gets his career back on track after that long layoff. -
Is the 1980 infielder Mario [crossout:189j1yh2]Diaz[/crossout:189j1yh2] Ramirez?

Yeah, I kind of bent my own definition of "active players, such as Wright, who are still eligible to disqualify themselves by playing for another team," by including Mejia, but there you have it. He's certainly eligible to be reinstated, but although I'm generally of the mind that athletes who can perform will get a chance from somebody, I wasn't feeling particularly optimistic about Mejia at the time. 1.
