  1. Chad Ochoseis wrote: And Yankee imagery, to my seven-year-old self, was dull, stodgy, hidebound. This was a big difference to me. The seventies may not have been much of a Mets decade, but the seventies—at least a childhood in the seventies—was the colors and tones and and zip of the Mets.
  2. The 1973 World Series (particularly the Rusty Staub injury) whet my appetite, but the operatic tragedy of 1977 hooked me for life. One of the ballgirls went to school with me my freshman year. She was, of course, unapproachable. One day, having to eat and skedaddle to her evening job, she showed up at the cafeteria in her uniform. I was unable to breathe. I knew then the madness was incurable.
  3. This one is for Zvon, I think. Senior Graphics & Animation Designer
  4. Feel free to run with that one.
  5. Looks more like an infielder's body.
  6. Don’t wait for news. MAKE news. Yeah, it’s a slow offseason. But you’re not slow. Come up with a topic and make a thread, for Pete’s sake. Here are some examples. Thread Title: Tim Teufel Revisited Initial Post: Tim Teufel was a below average fielder. He was a hard-nosed and game guy, but probably on his best day, he didn’t reach average. He was particularly bad on the double play. So why was he our infield coach? Thread Title: Collins Systems, Inc. Initial Post: If Terry Collins wasn’t in baseball, he’d be selling computer systems. Pretty big contracts to mid-size companies. No bullshit. Thread Title: Nature vs. Nurture Initial Post: Many Met legends—Keith Hernandez, John Olerud, John Maine, Johnny Monell—were raised by minor league vet dads who came within spitting distance of the bigs without quite getting there. Is it perhaps better to be the son of such a man—with talent and a drive born of tantalizing frustration—or to be the son of a big leaguer, inheriting stronger genes, but perhaps given too soft a life to feed your motivation? Start a thread of your own! Here's some motivation. Whoever starts the baseball thread this week that gets the most traction—a thread that isn't about breaking news or isn't a parking space for developing situations throughout the season—will get a VALUABLE PRIZE to be determined. No Russians.
  7. Apparently he spilled the beans at Fantasy Camp. So he's active and stuff. And that which is inoperable isn't necessarily un-radiatable. Best wishes, AY.
  8. I'm guessing it's more like 30-to-one against him ever appearing. But sure, you're looking at a guy who hasn't swum in 11 years thrown right into the ocean in some pretty rough seas. It's fine to have an opinion about how he looks out there, but it's silly to declare it to be somehow definitive.
  9. "I think Tim Tebow should stick to announcing and probably never play baseball again,'' Law said on an ESPN conference call. "He was the worst player I've ever seen in the 10 years I've been going to the Arizona Fall League" Ouch. Let's hoping he's right about Rosario but not so much about Tebow.
  10. I'm suspicious that Correa and Correa alone takes the fall.
  11. Bob Klapisch tweeting that the Mets' famed pitcher has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. It apparently hasn't yet been determined if it is malignant.
  12. BaseballAmerica had Blastings Thrilledge ranked #9 going into the 2006 season. Oops.
  13. Syndergaard made Top 10 on some lists. Never top 5, I don't think. Conforto peaked around 80, but he jumped through AAA to the majors in one season and almost certainly would have been top 25 hadn't the Mets tabbed him that quickly. José Reyes hit top 5 on some lists back in 2003-ish. I don't think anybody since him has. OE: 'Til now.
  14. There'll always be a different standard for the rich than the poor. As for minor league players, well, they're the rich's cheap, unorganized labor pool. I think they'll get in!
  15. They've had goofy spring lids before too. It's unfortunately the law these days. 16. Welcome, 41Forever. Is that a tribute to Seaver or a really unambitious store at the mall?
  17. Centerfield wrote: Are the lefties prospects? I thought we had signed a couple of journeyman minor-leaguers. If by prospects, you mean guys originally signed and developed by the Mets, Rose[fimg=100]https://lostcoastoutpost.com/media/uploads/post/14486/57a5f0dd57a47e1bdb441cb7c5efc696.jpg[/fimg] fits the bill. Wilkie was a minor league free agent. But, you know, so was R.A. Dickey.
  18. Well, they're all minor league guys until they're not. Rose-BOOM! held lefties to a .141 average (and righties to .189) in Binghamton last season. OE: Adam Wilk held LHB to a .167 average in the International League.
  19. Well, Edgin isn't righthanded. Neither is Gilmartin, Roseboom, or Wilk. Plus Roseboom has BOOM in his name.
  20. Amazin' Avenue suggests that this seemingly hyperbolic claim may actually objectively stand up when filtered through the lens of Total Zone ratings. c8HJkv6SkJU
  21. I must've missed that. Good catch. Satin has retired from pro ball, citing diminished skillz due to head injuries, but apparently has enough left to do a few weeks of battling for the Israelis.
  22. Keith Law (Key Flaw!) has just named Amed Rosario the #3 prospect. In all of baseball.
  23. Well, among what can be considered Disney characteristics is the very forced PG-ness you describe.
  24. You love it, you hate it, but you ca ... OK, you mostly hate it, but it's competitive ball before competitive ball starts, and some familiar guys will be out there chasing the ball around, having fun, and pulling hammies. Let's take a look at the roster. Australia No Mets, past or present, on the Wallabees Canada 2016 Met Jim Henderson will be bringing it for the Canucks China This team, formerly managed by Terry Collins, will be distressingly Metless. Chinese Taipei This "nation," which has no legal standing except as a sports entity, also lacks the advantages Metliness brings. Colombia 2016 Cyclone/Firefly/B-Met swingman pitcher Nabil Crismatt will be suiting up for the Colombians, as well as 2015 Met Dilson Herrera, still the only Colombian in Mets history. Cuba No Mets will be playing for Cuba, as even after the US has returned international trade with The Pearl of the Antilles, their expatriate players are still considered traitors. Dominican Republic Paper Met Jose Bautista will join his Dominican hermanos, along with real flesh-and-blood Met José Reyes Israel Ike Davis, Met of 2010–2014 will join the Maccabean infield brigade, possibly fielding throws from current Met Ty Kelly, a native of the Stockton, California region of Israel. Italy Between pitches, Brandon Nimmo will be working on his Catalan dialect in the Italian outfield. Japan We don't need your stinking Mets. Mexico Every team needs a catcher, and 2016 Las Vegan Xorge Carrillo will be stopping pitches before they become passed balls. That might be a good skill to come to the table with, because 2006-2010 Met lightning rod Oliver Perez will be in the Jumping Beans' bullpen. Joining Oliver will be 2016 Met Fernando Salas and stone-faced 2013-2015 Flushing bullpenner Carlos Torres. Netherlands I don't know whether Kirk Nieuwenhuiss and Matt den Dekker are too good for the Dutch team or the Dutchmen are too good for them, but no familiar names appear on the Netherlander roster. Puerto Rico You just say the word, "Puerto" followed by "Rico," and Carlos Beltran is on a plane in 10 minutes, and he'll be representing his countrymen this year, hoping his post-season skills translate to pre-season tournaments. He'll be joined by Louisianan-Puerto Rican and 2016 Met, reliever Seth Lugo. Fellow 2016-er T.J. Rivera (Bronx' own) will be infielding. South Korea Utterly metless. United States Daniel Murphy loves his country and will fight for it in the WBC. Venezuela It's not a party without a guy name Asdrubal, so the Mets are loaning out Asdrubal Cabrera to the WBC, leading Venezuelans including Francisco Rodriguez into battle. Was that guy really a Met? Did that even really happen? Join me in wishing our brave men luck and health.
  25. Because the God-damn Mets are offering him more money, and here we are with our hands tied by that Votto contract. If only there was a way to strengthen us at catcher, lower our payroll, and maybe get some young talent that might mature around the same time as that package we got for Straily. If only there was a way ... Granted, all this wild-assin' by me is playing fast and loose with Mets' money that may well not be available. My general principle is the notion that Votto's deal is going to get better as the years pass, or at least not depreciate as precipitously as some others may assume.
