#1 is Craig Anderson.

Well, then Desmond Lindsay has already leapfrogged one! I thought, after the damage he wreaked on the New York-Penn League last year, that he might just skip the Sally League and go straight to St. Lucie. Mentally bump him up there, and add Jay Jabs to Columbia. Jay had an awful debut with Brooklyn last year (.498 OPS in 200 PA), but like I said, outfield pickin's are slim.

The outfield scene for the Mets is seemingly a lot thinner than the crowd of their infield brothers. There's depth up top, but down below, barely a prospect at each level. And them that ain't prospects haven't even tended to demonstrate themselves as useful role players. A whole bunch of outfielders at about the NY-Penn League and Appalachian League levels put up stats no better than Tim Tebow in AFL, and this was over a full (half) season. Things don't look a whole lot better from Brooklyn on down either, unless you think that some of the teams' infield prospects will move to the outfield. One thing to watch is how fast Desmond Lindsay moves up. There are a lot of guys he can leapfrog this season. That would be a favorite of cooby's. Welcome to the thread ... Darren Reed!

From the mean street of Falls Road in Belfast, I'm bringing the best ERA in all of MLB-affiliated baseball. Yes, you heard that right. And while not a lot of guys get invited to spring training with only a half season above low-A ball, but I'm not a lot of guys. I'm the ruler of the mound, like Caesar Augustus. The P. stands for pitching and J. is for justice! Anyhow, that sounds a lot better than it reads when delivered with what's left of my Belfast accent. You may think I'm not ready for the bigs yet, but I sure ain't living with Edgy forever. I'll see you soon. How soon? Only foreseeing fans can tell. He may not be THE authority, but he's AN authority. No getting around that. When the team's PbP guy says your name, that's how folks is gonna say it. It's like Bill Klem said about whether a pitch is a ball or a strike: "It's nothing until I call it."
-
A big part of spring training for me is hearing Gary pronounce names (presumably correctly) that I have known for years, and have been mentally butchering for years. WHO KNEW?! The big reveal last year was that Travis Taijeron's last name was pronounced "Tyrone." WHO KNEW?! To me, it's just an alternate spelling for Jorge, and pronounced the same. That's my story until Gary sets me straight.
-
Hopefully, he's not a gascan. Invited to camp?
-
You can actually feel it tick up, can't you? It's in the spring in your step. It's in the increasing clarity of the horizon. Foreign newspapers suddenly make just a little more sense. You take historical tours and find yourself asking more acute and engaging questions of the docents.
-
well, this seems like more of a license to print money to be honest. Well, yes, I'm offering a more out-of-the-box (and more palatable and honorable) way to obtain money to those who pursue money. Psychology.
-
In a move that should be a surprise to no one, but will nonetheless take some getting used to, Mets officials have announced a new name for their Spring Training home. Tradition Field, formerly Digital Domain Park, formerly Tradition Field, formerly Thomas J. White Stadium, will henceforth (or until the money changes hands a few more times) be known as First Data Field. Gary Carter Stadium, man. It would be a license to print money.
-
Boscan pitches impressively well in that game. Takes the win with an inning and 2/3 scoreless after coming on to strike out Ruf or Rupp or one of those guys with men on base.
-
So, he was a king supreme for half the season, and a chump for the other half. What we have here is a genuine enigma.
-
Know what's worth remembering on a cold winter night? That .422 /.483 / .727 // 1.209 line he put up in AAA. Yeah, it was AAA, and the PCL in AAA, and Vegas in the PCL in AAA, but that was over a 144 plate appearances. That's certainly not nothing.

Change to strike zone, intentional walks
Edgy MD replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
An executive order, done with no real vetting, and pretending that the public will is on your side because you know what's best. As if the world wasn't Trumptastic enough. If Manford tweets, "I'll see you in court," I'm pushing the plunger down. -

I realize suddenly that Dale Burdick is in over his head at Bingo and is likely destined to open the season at St. Lucie. Stand by.
-
Doug Harvey—who retired after the 1992 season, and was inducted 18 years later—it is. The only subsequent induction of an ump was for Pre-Integration Committee selectee Hank O'Day, who umped from 1895 to 1927, and who was a decent pitcher before strapping on the chest protector, and ultimately appearing in 10 World Series. I'm sort of getting the idea the HoF is moving away from perhaps seriously considering the induction of any further umps. But I sure don't think the place would be ruined by the company of Bruce Froemming, Dutch Rennert, Joe West, or Frank Drebin. Froemming umped more games than anybody in history, for Pete's sake. He probably did something right.
-
Mike Francesa's contract is up at the end of the year (point one in the the argument that universe is sometimes just). Mark Chernoff has declared that he will "be looking to do some stuff" (which is just the most reassuringly professional-sounding thing an executive has ever said). And by most accounts, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is on the list of potential candidates. It almost makes me want to stand up and applaud, in between hurls. Twelve geniuses locked in a room for a month could not have come up with a more insane choice. I mean, yeah, there are far crazier crazies out there, but as for a sustainably crazy act, where a metropolis of angry will tune in every day just to make themselves angrier. A Sports Talk with the Guv show on drive time would be flaming comet of insanity. I mean, it would be awful, for any number of reasons, for sports and culture at large. For pure spectacle, short of setting fire to the Empire State, it's hard to top. And it would give our awful president a cultural toehold in the metropolitan area five nights a week.
-
Trivia question: Of the 10 umps inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, only one has suited up post 1978. Name that ump.

JJ's a Loyola Marymount product signed before the 2014 season after three years in the indy ball wilderness. Baseball-Reference (who updated their layout today, which will take some getting used to) calls him "John," but he's "Jonathan" in the MLB.com database. Weird. #persistence #jonniesnotasconnie
