  1. Yeah, but it's a terrible system that forces a guy to pick between the two. If I have great civil engineering skills, nobody tells me I can't take a scholarship to Stanford if I take a job surveying over the summer.
  2. The key to overcoming kinky days by journeymen relievers? Score nine runs per game. Glad to see Cabrera and Flores get their licks in, and Wright get his first hit in an age.
  3. It's the Catalanotto Covenant.
  4. Good for him winning 20 for a terrible team while bearing the mantle of the name Ned. You don't get a lot of heroic Neds in fiction. It's almost always used for guys who just don't get it. Ned Flanders, the squeaky, serial God-bothering neighbor in The Simpsons. Ned Ryerson, the overbearing insurance salesman in Groundhog Day. Ned Nederlander, the petite, underemployed swashbuckler in The Three Amigos. Ned Schneebly, the girlfriend-whipped substitute teacher/failed musician in School of Rock.
  5. Few will doubt the CV of Omar the scout. But Omar the personal manager and budget manager and value proposition guy and philosophy champion and all that stuff a GM is supposed to do and be including stuff I just made up? That's a different story.
  6. Between Harvey being the guy and Syndergaard being the guy ... I was totally the guy. What happened there? Rookie of the Year, man. And it's not like I've even had much of a falloff. Will I someday replace Sid Fernandez and Ron Darling as the best pitchers in Mets history to never get the ball on opening day? Hey, whatever, I've been underestimated before. I don't have a played-out superhero nickname, or a page-six publicist. I just have the tenacity to hammer the strike zone every five days, and miss a lot of bats while I'm doing it. Leave the drama to those other guys. So, not to be dramatic, but how am I gonna do this year? David Wright is raising his hand in the back of the room. Sorry, I lead all active-at-the-end-of-last-season Mets in KABOOM!s. My mistake. My big, goofy mistake.
  8. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Running out of time? He's 22. I mean to suggest that he's running out of time before the Mets have commit. They were forced to add him to the roster this offseason despite him so far topping out with 40 ineffective innings in St. Lucie back in 2015. Now he's got three-ish seasons to find his way to the bigs and stick there before the Mets have to make a commitment, and he could end up getting pushed off the back end of the roster during one transaction pinch or another. If he's going to find his way to CitiField, where the rotation is looking pretty roadblocked, it may have to be as a reliever. Else, maybe the best he and the Mets can hope for is the fate of Logan Verrett and Gabriel Ynoa, sold below cost to an AL team to avoid the waiver wire. So, yeah, running out of time at 22, at least from a Metly perspective. That happens when you are signed at 16. Szacpucki probably finds his way to Columbia soon enough. Maybe out of camp, but maybe not. Right now, I think he's fourth guy below that list. But spring ends, there are injuries, releases, heartbreak, and Sizzle will hopefully move up. Smart money probably has him opening with Columbia, but we don't know which four guys will have to fall away to make that happen.
  9. I'm curious as to whether Molina emerges from his time away as a reliever. It's a quicker route the big leagues and he's running out of time.
  10. I hit 30 homers once and 27 another time. I lead all active Mets in KABOOM!s and I'm just 10 swings away from the all-time top 10 list. IMMORTALITY! But, I'm a big, enigmatic, goofy guy. And carrying around this much me is tough on the old joints. They hurt, like a lot. Blame who you want to blame. Maybe I shouldn't have played all that futile outfield and stuff. But now is now. Fortunately, it's early in spring training and there's time to catch up. And man, I'm raring to get go... OW! Shoulder! Shit! Is this how 2017 is going to look? Really? Let me know. 11. The team has no shortage of in-house options. Besides, Mike Napoli stole Danny Muno's girlfriend. He's dead to me.
  12. Conforto putting on a show.
  13. Rowen's bringing it from 7:30.
  14. Tigers make a pickoff attempt at second with nobody covering. That's what happens when your fielders are wearing the same colors as the umpires.
  15. Supposedly OK. Just a contusion. X-rays are negative.
  16. Mets up 1-0 as Reyes beats out a potential 6-4-3. Laggy has clobbered the ball twice but Machado has somehow snagged it both times.
  17. Forgetful fish from 2003's Finding Nemo remembers her family, and sets off on a quest to find them, bringing her and her southern hemisphere friends Marlon and Nemo all the way to California. Score by Thomas Newman. [fimg=550]http://cdn.collider.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/finding-dory-poster.jpg[/fimg]
  18. Here's a thing: If you walk, jog to first. Don't stand there taking off your elbow pad, and then your shinguard. Go to first and get undressed when you get there.
  19. Damon Buford is the Cubbie guy. OE: Nope.

  21. He is, and with a little luck, he'll be climbing rapidly.
  22. Wilmer's the backup, but things change when the starter isn't taking a day off, but is knocked out. They could end up with Flores, but also with Bruce, with Conforto, with Wright, or Smitty. But it's probably still most likely gonna be Duda. Although I imagine somebody on Twitter at this very moment is typing, "I TOLD you we shoulda resigned Loney!"
  23. Pete Smith is the original Manchurian Met
  24. Nice to see a comeback, but it was a sloppy game. Asides from that Plawecki play, where a buncha mugs seem to have played it poorly, depending on your angle, the first run on an RBI single from Conforto, in which the big guy gave himself up at second totally un-necessarily. It was also the second time in two games they come up empty after loading the bags with no outs. Wright went on about the depth in his in-game interview, saying it was the most depth he had seen on any Mets team he's been on. That was probably at least half spring training glurge, but it was totally the second and third string who hit them back into the game.
  25. While they've gone deeper at the top level the last two years, they're still pretty deep, perhaps impressively so, depending on what they've found in Wilk and Boscan, two guys who may (or may not) fit the profile of high-contact guys who struggle in Vegas but bloom in the bigs. They've got some interesting comers throughout the top of the system, and Conlon and Crismatt may come fast. Scarlyn Reyes has been leapfrogged by several guys, and I have him lined up to take a step backwards. That's unlikely, and if he doesn't at least pitch his way back to St. Lucie this spring, he'll probably be released. Justin Dunn, I have as starting at Columbia, but he may be join the Scarlyn jumpers and reach St. Lucie soon. Guys invited to big league camp are shown in red.
