  1. Was expected to participate in a partial schedule this year. Belongs in the Mets Hall of Fame. Safe journeys to you.
  2. MFS62 wrote: This is a place to find that news instead of a catchall Spring Training thread or daily game threads. This is a place to find information about wives and who is and isn't a douchebag.
  3. Two major surgeries in the last three years. It doesn't sound like a superhero story. But maybe it will by the time they're done writing it. I'm Matt Harvey, I like big cars, big-shot city life, partying with models, pushing the Harvey brand, golfing with our daily disgrace of a president, and Derek Jeter. And every fifth day, I like tearing through an enemy lineup. I hope I can still do it. Because it would be a shame if the last thing on that list was Derek Jeter. Can I still do it? 5. That's an interesting bunch of guys. One fact each about each of those muggs: Herm Winningham: Unlikely hero of the 1990 World Series, as the Reds swept Sandy Alderson's mighty A's. Jorge Toca: Schoolboy pals with Rey Ordóñez. Ben Johnson: Got most of his Mets PT during a horrible June swoon that forbode the team's 2007 collapse. They lost, like 10 of 11 with him appearing semi-regularly in a shorthanded outffield. I wouldn't be surprised if Johnson never appeared in a Mets victory. Ángel Berroa: In the Tim Foli/Ozzie Guillen mold of shortstops who seemingly hated to walk. Danny Muno: As noted recently, lost his girlfriend to Mike Napoli.
  6. Ruined a rally on the basepaths during his short stay, if I recall.
  7. If he's truly out of options, which I understand him to be, it'll be tough to ride the shuttle, as he'll have to clear waivers every time he goes down, including on April 1, if he doesn't make the club out of camp. That certainly can happen, but lefthanded relievers probably tend to get grabbed more than your typical waiver bait. I think it's stick-or-disappear time.
  8. Here's Luis going full Rey-O for Spain in last year's WBC qualifier against Colombia: http://mediadownloads.mlb.com/mlbam/mp4/2016/03/17/556697883/1458255592866/asset_1200K.mp4
  9. He'll be slow to come around to AA pitching, but when a vacancy gets him a AAA promotion (if only a brief one), his numbers will spike accordingly.
  10. Bob Ferguson had a 14-year career from 1871 to 1884—a career taking him from the National Association to the National League to the American Association. He was a notable player in his time (once leading the league with 24 walks), but his name would be lost to history if it hadn't been linked to one of the all-time great nicknames. Bob Ferguson was better known as "Death to Flying Things." Well, I'm Luis Guillorme, and I'm dusting that name off. You want to throw balls my way, I'll catch 'em. What else you got? A bat? Caught. A tire iron? Snagged. A hot clothing iron? It's in my back pocket. I haven't played above A ball. I've only been passingly acceptable with the bat, and have exhibited zero power. And yet here I am in Major League Spring Training camp. Why? Because I am Death to Flying Things. I've demonstrated my facility by SAVING BRANDON NIMMO'S LIFE, and already I've taken a big league pitcher deep for a three-run bomb. What does this foretell? Nothing? EVERYTHING?! Who knows? Maybe you do. 11. The Transaction Ticker wrote: Nationals sent C Spencer Kieboom outright to Triple-A Syracuse. Kieboom cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week. The 25-year-old will remain in camp as a non-roster invite. Spencer Kieboom! HOW DID WE NOT CLAIM THIS GUY?!
  12. Izzy breaks out with four runs in the first and is leading 6-0 over Chinese Taipei midway through five. Israel thirdbaseman Ty Kelly is 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Chin-lung Hu may not be the first guy you think of when you think of "designated hitter." In fact, he may not be in your top 1,000. But there he is, dh-ing and leading off for the Taiwanese, where he is currently 0-for-2. Israel is taking a more traditional approach to the DH, starting Ike Davis there, and enjoying his two hits in three trips, and his run scored and two RBI.
  13. The Daily News says, "Travis d’Arnaud is making the Mets giddy with his revamped swing." I think it's good also. I mean 9 hits with two homers was a good month for him last year. But the guy whose found his swing is also the guy who lost it, so he and they need to stick with the program, especially if he gets hurt and needs to find that swing again after a layoff. "I'm able to see the ball longer and not have to cheat to get to certain pitches,'' d'Arnaud said. "I've shortened the swing up so it's more direct and I don't have to overcommit too soon." Patzachry! He has liberated himself and he stands as a beacon of freedom to all. 14. In 2015, I was the Sterling Award winner as the team's outstanding minor league pitcher. But that seemed incidental. I mean, I didn't strike anybody out. How could I be a prospect. In 2016, I started striking people out. Maybe it was the Warthan slider. I don't know. But like deGrom and Syndergaard before me, I hit the big leagues like a comet after a mushy performance in Las Vegas. I gots the hair, too. Fluke? Small sample size? Phenom? You decide, here and now. 15. Your final is 8-2. Congratulations to floater Gene Cone, who debuted with two walks in two plate appearances, including a bases loaded jobbie.
  16. Phil Evans puts the Mets back on top with an RBI single and then the Junior Mets start piling on and break the game open. Two-run homer by L.J. Mazzilli. It's the first Time HR: Mazzilli has appeared in a Mets boxscore in 28 years.
  17. Good lineup instincts, Mr. Collins.
  18. Spotted on the Taiwan/Chinese Taipei roster: 2011 Met Chin-lung Hu, now an outfielder.
  19. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I see that as we've moved from "F" to "G" in the alphabet, we've switching from "Foreseeing" to "Edge of" It's punchier, don't you think? The folks in Sweden thought so. They said it has a certain "Stand back!" quality.
  20. 2016 Met Ty Kelly started at third and batted second for the Maccabeans, and took the collar. The real Metly heroism came when 2016 B-Met and Las Vegan (but currently a free agent) Josh Zeid came on to pitch the last three innings, getting in and out of trouble, giving up a hit and two walks in the first two innings, but putting them down in order in the 10th, striking out the last two. The host Koreans are somehow trying to win this thing while fielding a Metless roster, and they paid for it.
  21. Lefty Specialist wrote: Well, he was right about those two balls being called strikes. Yeah, that was goofy, wasn't it? I think when you've made a few All Star teams, being petulant and bitchy helps you get your calls. I think when you haven't, it helps you lose your calls. Umps aren't ashamed about being intimidated by Roger Clemens, but they want to show the Lowries of the world who is boss.
  22. TransMonk wrote: I would counter that all professional athletes are not duct-tape-40-ounce-bottles-to-your-hand, fang-mouthpiece-wearing, butt-crack-thumbs-up-giving douchebags. I'd understand where his Nathan-and-Koehler experience might leave him with that impression, though.
  23. I like the ball low. I top almost everything I hit. I'm shameless about hitting into the shift. I can disappear for a month at a time. Often the first month. I produce low averages. Yet somehow, going into the fourth year of my Mets contract, I've managed to remain a productive player. I've been a gregarious and generous and charitable public figure. I've stepped up in the leadership department in David Wright's absence. I've played out of position. I've batted wherever in the lineup, with no regards to how it may or may not affect my game. And I've shed the Yankee taint like few before me. But how long can I keep this juggling act going? One more year? You decide? 24. Boyish face, but massive hands. He could pitch a decent-sized pumpkin with those hands. You know, I see him in that position, with those enormous phalanges, and I'm thinking maybe he should try catcher.
  25. I Googled "Is Brett Lawrie a doucebag?" because I like to be up on the issues. Not a pleasant diversion.
