Well, I'm only half serious, but I certainly object to all the ways the league puts artificial restraints on the market. Tony Clark's reign as MLBPA president hasn't impressed me so far, and if he can score one against the suits, I'm all for it.

The guys I'm kinda disappointed didn't get an invite are the guys who went to the AFL, like Kyle Regnault our long-suffering knuckler Mickey Jannis. Those guys did well almost to the last man. No one will want to miss Lunchy! He goes on between two raffles!

It strikes me that filling up the roster early in December to protect players from the Rule V draft, rather than leaving two or so spots open, may be counter productive. If you lose a guy in the Rule 5 Draft, a team has to carry him all year long or offer him back. If you have a full roster, you frequently have to put guys through waivers when you sign free agents later in the winter, and if a team claims one of those guys, he's gone for good. By reaching the bigs, Chasen made good on a 35th-round draft pick from 2011, the first under the Alderson/DePodesta/Riccardi/Ricco regime, the 13th player from that draft to make the Show, with nine making it as Mets.

He wasn't actually invited last year, so much as floated. A lot. There used to be a limit on how frequently you could float a non-camper onto your game-day roster, but last year, it looked like non-invitees Tebow and L.J. Mazzilli got more plate appearances than anybody. Mets Roster Central has him as the 12th outfielder on the organizational depth chart, with non-invites such as Jayce Boyd, Kevin Taylor, John Mora, Wuilmer Becerra (invited as a 40-man roster player last year), and Champ Stuart ahead of him, but I recognize the now-or-neverness of his status. And I'm sure those guys will all get springtime appearances if they play their cards right. Stuart's probably the best ballhawk in the organization (apart from Lagares) and managers usually like to have one of those around, no matter how crappy the rest of their game looks. If Laggy gets dealt, Stuart will probably get a long look even if he's hitting .200 (which isn't unheard of for him).

LJ it is! The fourth of four members of our exclusive Yankees/Mets/White Sox/Cubs Club! We can go to our meetings in one car!

Szapucki won't be pitching, having had his season end in July of last year with Tommy John surgery. Also, he hasn't appeared above Columbia, and the Alderson-era Mets have a policy of only inviting guys who they think could conceivably make the team under a realistic scenario, so experience in the high minors seems to be a pre-requisite. I kind of liked the days when the team's top prospects, no matter what their level, would get an invite, just to give them a flavor of a big league environment, working out with big league players, before shuffling them back to minor league camp after a week with a ticket to Savannah or wherever.

A whole lotta beard. Whole lotta. Not the longest but perhaps the densest thing I've seen on a Metface since Pete Falcone. Also part of a strange subset of young Mets in recent years (along with Paul Sewald) who've come through Las Vegas who are actually from Las Vegas. As a guy who put up a sub-4.00 ERA in 2017, even with a lot of luck, I kind of knew he'd get claimed as soon as he was DFA'd.

Yeah, guys! You didn't play along with the 300 Homers Club! I guess they won't be breaking down the door to get into our club! Oh, man! They let YOU in?! SHUT UP! There aren't too many of us! Yeah, if somebody can find our fourth and final member, we'll have enough for bridge!

As per the standard in the Alderson era, the Mets have been particularly stingy with their spring invites. I'm guessing that recently DFI'd pitchers Chasen Bradford and Kevin McGowan will get invites if they clear waivers, but that remains to be seen. Starting Pitchers P.J. Conlon, L/L Relief Pitchers Matt Purke, L/L Drew Smith, R/R Corey Taylor, R/R Adonis Uceta, R/R Catchers Jose Lobaton, S/R Patrick Mazeika, L/R Infielders Peter Alonso, R/R Phil Evans, R/R David Thompson, R/R Outfielders Zach Borenstein, L/R Kevin Kaczmarski, L/R Tim Tebow, L/L Most likely names there to break camp with the team strike me as Purke and Borenstein. A good camp could get Smith onto the bus too, I guess.

I care.

Watching a manager stand on the field doing nothing while he waits for a second-hand signal from the dugout about what the video review team suggests doesn't add drama, it subtracts it.

Well, a lot of that can happen, as he notes, in Spring Training. He got a lot of points for working with Cody Bellinger last year, and not just retro-actively. Always nice to have a guy who knows the league.

I'm telling you: Disallow teams from delaying the game in order to do their own video reviews before deciding whether to lodge a protest and you cut 90 minutes out right right there. Any other measures are just dribs and drabs. And those dribs and drabs will immediately be offset by more video review delays.

I'm a little surprised by Bradford, as he performed better (3.74) than most Met relievers in 2017. Yeah, that's luck and sample size to a great extent, but ... well, I'm a little surprised. Go shave that raccoon off your face. Congratulations to Jamie Callahan for being the next in line. For now. May your fate be brighter than Chasen's. Bump me! I beat Delgado at ping-pong! OK, I tied him! Well I scored a few points anyhow!

Chastenings all 'round.

Vic Sage wrote: Sewald's still on the 40, yes? I think he has a shot at an opening day slot, as do Callahan and Rhame. At least one of them, anyway. I just don't want to see any more of Montero or Robles. He's still there, but in the next couple of days, there will be blood. And just as I type that, ABNS breaks in with the Bradford news. Chasen got chastened! And Seaweed is probably next on the depth chart. Vic Sage is brilliant!

You're right. I was thinking of your Sewald semi-endorsement. My apologies.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I think Sandy is pretty good at the Magic Quotes. One way to interpret "it's more likely we'll sign a FA" is "Pirates are currently driving too hard a bargain but I'm a patient man." I did too. It allows him to work the Indians, the Pirates, and Neil Walker's agent against each other. But the Twittersphere seems to have insisted on treating that statement as money in the bank and they've already gone out and written emotional checks based on it. He could keep letting the market come to him well into the spring. Fans might show up at St. Lucie with guns, but hey!

A Boy Named Seo wrote: Jesse O was Mexican-American Yeah, prob a bunch of those guys including "Mex" who is not actually a Mex. Omar Quintanilla comes to mind. A Tex-Mexer who was last seen playing for Los Toros de Tijuana. Daniel Ray Herrera was a Texican, too, and he had a glorious crown of hair that could put Jake deGrom to shame.

Karim Garcia is the first one to come to mind for me.
