I don't know if this is the opening day lineup, but it's weird. Reyes over Flores is certainly a stronger choice in theory at second. But the lineup doesn't particularly seem to shake out stronger. Not ideally, anyhow. The manager is perhaps tempted to shoehorn Reyes into his old leadoff position, dropping Nimmo or Cabrera into the middle of the lineup. I chose Cabrera, but neither is the way you really want it. Maybe things may line up better if and when another infielder comes along, but I certainly prefer keeping Nimmo up top as long as he is in the lineup. [fimg=200]http://offload.uni.watch/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/13094922/Screen-shot-2015-07-15-at-3.12.33-PM.png[/fimg]Wong, 2bCarpenter, 1bOzuna, lfPham, cfFowler, rfDeJong, ssGyorko, 3bMolina, cC. Martinez, spReyes, 2bNimmo, cfCéspedes, lfBruce, rfCabrera, 3bGonzalez, 1bd'Arnaud, cRosario, ssdeGrom, sp Maybe d'Arnaud tears it up in the spring, and he's the #5 batter, with Nimmo and Cabrera at the top of the lineup and Reyes seventh. I can work with that. If the Cardinals signed Dave Kingman to play first, they could have a DeJong to Wong to Kong double-play.

Mets will out-victory the Brewers. I guarantee it.

41Forever wrote: I don't know if I agree with that, Edgy. I just think people had unrealistic expectations. They probably thought they were getting the otherworldly guy they saw in the playoffs and were let down that they got a guy who was merely excellent. Met fans embraced Gooden and Strawberry and other African American players. Well, as I wrote, "Blacks and Latinos have always been welcome in Metland, but ... ." Big but, but if you haven't heard thinly veiled racist attacks on Strawberry and Gooden, you've led a happier life than I have. (First guy I met when I got to college called Mookie Wilson "Spooky.") But don't ask 2017 me what went down in 2005, ask 2005 Omar Minaya. Or ask T.C.!

A whole lot of racism was tied up in that. Zero percent will admit it, but hiring an Afro-Dominican-ish GM who made his first big splash by going out and signing an Afro-Rican-ish star, who then himself had the audacity to take the first question at his introductory press conference in Spanish brought to the surface a whole lot of Trumptastic Los Mets bullshit in the fanbase. Self-styled forgotten white men were acting all durr .... my team is being taken from me! Blacks and Latinos have always been welcome in Metland, but suddenly it was becoming apparent in an ugly way that their cultural ascendency was not particularly welcome at all. Nor was them merely expressing themselves as the people they were. The stupid stupidness of the Walter Reed debacle only confirmed the distrust such fans had held him in since day one. At another site, I was told that he "never went full extension" in pursuit of a ball (unlike true Americans like Lenny Dykstra, apparently, was the undercurrent). I posted 10 shots of him going full extension, including full extension into Mike Cameron's face, as well as glorious catches going over the wall and climbing Tal's hill, and the guy turned around and attacked my fucking patriotism.

Centerfield wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Yeah, that's what the team has to bank on. If at the time Conforto is activated, we find ourselves asking "Man, what do we do with all of these totally healthy and productive players?" I'll sign up for that right now. Yeah, that's pretty much right. And if suddenly a rash of health breaks out, Reyes, Gonzalez, and Cabrera are all on one year deals, making them more tradable or releasable, as needed.

Yeah, that's what the team has to bank on.

I see the difference. You're counting Conforto, but he's almost certainly not going to be on the roster for Opening Day.

Sure. Two catchers plus six infielders plus four outfielders plus 13 pitchers = 25.

No, I didn't forget Smith. And neither Flores nor Smith are in danger of being shed from the 40-man roster, which is discussed in the roster thread, so it isn't true either that no one is talking about it.

No, Roster Central is reporting plenty of room for Flores. Right now, the infield looks like: Asdrubal Cabrera# Amed Rosario José Reyes# Wilmer Flores T.J. Rivera (projected for DL) Matt Reynolds Adrian Gonzalez* David Wright (projected for DL) There are four outfielders. Another infielder isn't guaranteed, but if he or she comes, it's Reynolds on the bubble. Doesn't mean Florrie or somebody won't get shipped out in a trade, of course.

His legacy still lives on in the person of Carlos Gomez. Deolis Guerra, too, who has been pitching for the Angels. Phil Humber last pitched overseas in 2016, and Kevin Mulvey hung 'em up in 2012 after bouncing back to the Mets' system. I blame Johan for my relentless addiction to J.R. Watkins Apothecary Liniment.

I think that's part of his program. To help Céspedes with strength and resilience by literally throwing him under a bus. #barwismethods

I'll bet the Mets outpace the Brewers.

[Marlins General Manager] Hill made the trade as he began a trip to run seven marathons on seven continents in seven days. Not that I'm not impressed, but ... seriously?

On top of the exciting news of the Reyes re-signing comes the thrilling news that some of the Mets' minor league free agents are finding new employment! Unfortunately, next, we find out which pound of flesh the team will have to give up from the 40-man roster. Keep your head down, Sewald. Lorenzo Cain or Matt Cain? Or maybe Herman Cain!

Ceetar wrote: Reynolds and Cecchini aren't threats to be on the roster. They were the fifth and sixth infielders as of yesterday.

I'm not sure what Smith has to do with Reyes. One plays first and the other plays (hopefully) six other positions. Smith will start in the majors if he's demonstrated himself to be superior to AG, and in the minors if he hasn't. Reyes' signing knocks Reynolds or Cecchini off the roster, not Smith.

The Mets are rallying and looking to tack on when Vladimir Guerrero sinks their hopes with a little arm porn. You're nobody until Howie Rose says your name. [youtube:35x8ir3q]s29G5pJPrVo[/youtube:35x8ir3q]

I'm guessing that, while they were leaning toward Chicklo and Golia all along, they couldn't finalize the hires until they had this new senior training and medical regime in place before they could get them to sign off on the dugout staff.

That's not that big a stretch. He's exactly 100th all-time in pitcher bWAR, and hopefully has one more shot at adding to that.
