Benjamin Grimm wrote: I guess it also means the end of either Lagares or Nimmo as a NYM. Probably Lagares as he's too expensive to keep around as a 4th OF I'm not so sure. Unless I'm forgetting someone, doesn't the signing of Bruce give them five outfielders: Cespedes, Conforto, Bruce, Lagares, Nimmo? I can't think of who the sixth guy might be. Taijeron is gone, and so is Aoki. If Lagares or Nimmo goes, they'll need to get someone to replace the guy who leaves, right? Four guys until Conforto is back. The fifth guy until then is Zach Borenstein or one of our infielders faking it.

This isn't the move I was hoping for. As I've said, if they're going to bury Nimmo, I'd hope they would do it with somebody decidedly better than him. But if gives them depth at both corners and a cleanup hitter for opening day, even as it forces us to confront a longer-term future with Conforto in center. I'd also like to still see a fifth outfielder. Cool/not-so-cool Jay Bruce fact: He was born the day Dwight Gooden checked into the Smithers Clinic. I realize Gossage played a million years and spanned eras, but to describe him as the last of the three-inning closers is less true than it is to describe him as the first of the one-inning closers.

OK, Cards, how do you like these cards? Pete LaCock, Doobie Brothers-era firstbaseman and outfielder for the Cubs and Royals, is the son of longtime Hollywood Squares host Peter Marshall. If Nimmo starts performing at a 100-walk clip, he'll get the playing time. Hell, Tony Phillips got the playing time.

That's a good club. I always think of Lee Mazzilli as a guy who had 100 walks in him, but he never quite scaled that mountain. Edgardo Alfonzo too peaked at 95. Granderson got as high as 91 with the Mets in 2015. I guest the best current candidate is Nimmo.

While Kari Ann Gee certainly appeared a little juvenile back in her Mets days, it never occurred to me that Dillon might be lying about her age (shudder). I actually (very) unfairly disparaged Dillon there. I conflate him with John Maine, whose Mets career ended (and his nickname earned) in Washington, after he assured his coaches that he was fine and ended up getting pulled after just five pitches.

Hey, somebody just gave René Rivera $2.8 million to catch for them in 2018, and that somebody is the Angels. While you may have expected René to be in the take-a-minor-league-deal-and-live-in-hope phase of his career, following his trade from the Mets to the Cubs last year, he somehow went all Céspedes, laying down a .341 / .408 / .591 // .999 in a 20-game, 50-plate appearance blast. The 2017 season was just so weird.

The Mets have announced new Las Vegas manager Tony DeFrancesco's squad for 2018. Interestingly, their house cleaning included training staff. The Mets still haven't announced the big league training staff, so that means if 51s trainer Deb Iwawow isn't being given the mets job, she's hout. The 2018 staff is as follows: Manager: Tony DeFrancesco TonManaged the AAA Fresno Grizzlies in the Houston system the last three years. He was the interim manager of the Astros back in 2012. Pitching Coach: Glenn Abbott Glennie had been the pitching coach for Binghamton the last five seasons. Everybody's played for Glennie. Hitting Coach: Joel Chimelis Joel, whose name sounds like he should be the president of FOX Searchlight Pictures of something, was also a long-time member of the Astros' development team, having served most recently as the Low-A Midwest League Quad City Bandits hitting coach. Joel is also a rare guy who actually lost his chance to the 1994 players strike. He took the field in spring training as a replacement, and though nothing came of that, folks remembered, and when he was called up to join the actual non-replacement Giants in 1995, the players shunned him, and fearing a player revolt, the Giants sent him down after two days and no appearances.)\ Bullpen Coach: Jeremy Accardo Having finished his pitching career as recently as 2015, Accardo spent 2017 as pitching coach of the rookie-level Gulf Coast Mets. I didn't even know minor league teams hired bullpen coaches. Athletic Trainer: Grant Hufford Grant comes to the Mets from — you guessed it — the Astros, having most recently served with the short-season low-A Appalachian League Greenville Astros, keeping them in top condition for their matchups with the Kingsport Mets. Before that he was with the Lawrence Orthopedic Surgery Clinic in Lawrence, Kansas and served as athletic trainer for the Baldwin High School teams. Now he's a heartbeat from the big leagues. Go, Grant! Assistant Athletic Trainer: Kiyoshi Tada Kiyoshi Tada has been in the Mets organization since 2011, mostly with Brooklyn, but he worked for the low-A Columbia Fireflies in the Sally League last season. Assistant trainers also sound like a luxury in the minors, but Yoshi wants you to know that he is not here for your bullshit. Strength and Conditioning Coach: Josh Fields Last but not least, Josh Fields is the only member of the Las Vegas staff returning from 2017, so I'll bet my Marshall Crenshaw vinyl that he's got a hook with Barwis.

Lots of veteran sluggers — Hall of Famers and All-Stars — but then there's Tony F. Phillips. Lots of lefty hitters, but then there's Ricky Henderson, who probably came to the plate batting righthanded more than anybody in history. Lots of guys who finished their careers as Mets pinch-hitters/part-timers, but then there's Delgado and Olerud and others who were nothing but fulltimers as Mets. Lots of guys who were Mets post-1980, but then there's Richie Ashburn. Lots of guys who came to the Mets from the American League, but Bobby Abreu and Carlos Delgado came from National League rivals. NO pitchers. And a whole lot of runs scored. At LEAST 10,000 runs. Probably close to 20,000.

[fimg=400]https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AdgNjehx7Nk/VUZvmYNXWfI/AAAAAAAA3gg/MuMO4sd7nVk/s1600/mets%2Byogi%2Bberra.jpg[/fimg] I bet I'm in! The key to getting invited to be in a club is to go to all the members' funerals!

It'll certainly be counted if he's reinstated, which is the idea. Beyond that, I'm not sure why anyone would care if it'll be "counted against the salary," since there is no cap in baseball, and the luxury tax threshold is something that the Mets aren't likely to be approaching. And if they shock everybody and do, they aren't going to let their desire to retain the rights to a banned player handcuff them.

He's technically on the roster and has been all along, but suspended players don't count against the roster limit.

Those of you that collect these ding-dongs will do better. For the rest of us, it be a challenge.

It certainly will if he plays, and something in me suggests he will.

They may find themelves at an Ike-v.-Lucas point soon. I'd love to see them last together for years like Grote and Dyer, but that's not the way things tend to work out, and I expect one will be dealt off in a big Felix Hernandez deal or something.

Since payrolls are reported by non-stupid third parties, I'll guess not.

Brewers roll of honor: Eddie Matthews.

The statue that the Braves left behind in Atlanta and rebuilt in Cobb County is Hank Aaron.

The Braves' statue is Bobby Cox, who was something of a statue as a manager.

Sheesh, bouncing up old threads from old, failed romances seems to be a thing these days.
