You're missing ... something. If you knew not one iota of his background, you'd still get a kind of uncomfortable vibe every time the mic was turned over to him. It's off-putting. Like, you just know there's a not-particularly-reformed ex-con in the room searching for his next angle.

Yeah, the Mets added the third most last off-season and the fifth-most so far this off-season. According to spotrac, anyhow. There's plenty of reason to be encouraged by those numbers, if you're of a mind to. But there's plenty of reason to see it in such context as (1) hey, they started from an abnormally low baseline a few years back, (2) they had something of a selloff in the interim (though mostly of players in the last year of their contracts), and (3) that chart doesn't include salary added through trades, such as the Yankees took on when adding Stanton. I'd certainly say what Sandy said if I was in his loafers.

I've been using Brian Chicklo as a placeholder all offseason, so imagine my surprise when the new Met head trainer is ... Brian Chicklo! I'm all for internal hires, but it's passing strange to let all this time pass and the guy you hire is the guy in the next chair. The new assistant trainer is an internal hire too. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I partially agree. Colon is not the answer to the Mets rotation problems, but thinking things are "just fine" is way too optimistic. With luck, it could turn out that way, but importing another pitching option would help the odds. I'm not sure anything is ever just fine. Good pitching is ephemeral. All rotations are held together by spit and duct tape You try and build up redundancies, but there's only so much that can be effected by signing veterans. Sometimes you are just burying developing talent underneath somebody else's broken pitcher. The window to break through is short, so you've got to show some faith or lose your guy. But yeah, I'm all for pursuing Darvish.

Sheesh, let's start a journalism sourcing sub-forum.

I guess my application for director of low performance is still being considered. /*pumpsfist

What has been announced? All I've seen is general talk about a growing understanding that training goes beyond the two guys in the dugout, but requires a broad support team. All of that is true and hardly news and welcome to the injury-aversion specialist and all, but I'm still waiting to find out who the two guys (or women) in the dugout will be.

They should, yeah.

Putting aside the ADDED DRAMA of a Christianity vs. Paganism matchup in the finals, I went for BLUNDER too. It's the whole season in three words!

It's a pleasure to welcome back Israeli superstar Tyler Patrick Kelly to the fold and I wish him luck in battling Matt Reynolds and Gavin Cecchini for a potential 25th man slot. The most immediate ramifications, though, will fall upon L.J. Mazzilli, as it really screws up his quest to escape Binghamton, now entering it's fourth year. Nothing comes easy, Lee, Jr. It hasn't been announced whether Kelly's deal comes with a Spring Training invite, but these sorts of deals usually do, so I'm treating it as a safe assumption that he's a camper. Henry Aaron of the Braves (still in Milwaukee at the time) takes a cut against the mighty Roger Craig at the Polo Grounds. The "H." on Aaron's uniform indicates that his brother Tommie was on the team at the time as well.

That's terrific! More funny.

Zvon wrote: Who is this Jamie Callahan guy? I was reading this chart off to my brother and he says no such person even exists. I'm not sure if your brother watched too many Mets games down the stretch last season, but Jamie Callahan appeared in nine of them in September. JC is a righthander, one of three relievers to come over from the Red Sox in the Addison Reed deal, and (obviously) the closest to the bigs. A former second round pick out of high school, he initially floundered as a starter, but has had a pretty quick climb since switching to the pen in 2015. Doesn't really have any offspeed stuff, but he has a combo of a hard overhand fastball, a splitter, and a cutter that can bring life to a game and and make quick work of an inning if he's on. But sometimes the control isn't there. Baby-faced and built kind of thick around the middle. Not fat (not yet, anyhow), but kinda thick. Jamie Callahan. Know that name.

I'm not too sure about the have serious concerns/none play premium positions thing. I mean, sure, but Chris Davis, Prince Fielder, Jason Heyward ...

Well, he's being thoughtful, and trying to make nuanced distinctions. I'll give him that. Clemens didn't take "his fight all the way to the halls of Congress." He was called there.

I got 55 of 56. The only one I couldn't get was 1967. i came up with him just after time ran out.

I like Bobby Cannavale and his assortment of characters, but they all sort of project "Yankee fan," don't they?

"And that's ball four, and P.J. Conlon looks a little rattled. That's an unusually high three walks for him already in this game and we're only in the fourth inning. And here comes Colón. Manager Mickey Callaway has sent his pitching coach out to settle down the young pitcher. There he goes. Remember, there's a clock on how long a pitching coach's trip can last this year. Bartolo has just crossed the foul line. No warning will come from the ump; the clock just buzzes and you're done. Colón is just now reaching the mound, and has just enough time to wave at Conlon before he is forced to turn around head right back to the dugout."

If the team thinks he could help, and he only costs a minor league contract, I'm all for it. Considering his style, I'd imagine he'd be pretty vulnerable to a double-digit ERA if he got a Vegas assignment, and if that's the case, no promotion will come. If he does somehow get signed and manage to pitch his way onto the roster and perform effectively, I certainly wouldn't take that second hand report as a statement of intent to retire after six wins. If he did that while the team was pursuing something, and he was their best asset to help them pursue it, he'd go into retirement looking like a real turd.

I think, somewhere in the rumors, it has been said that he'd be willing to take a minor league deal.

Yeah, but I'm certainly humble enough to acknowledge that I don't know. There's a not necessarily on both sides of the question.

I'm not really arguing collusion, but I don't think the majority of guys left unsigned is necessarily a real and spontaneous market correction.

Of 166 free agents, 38 have been signed. Taking a random top 20 from CBS sports,12 of the top 20 free agents remain unsigned, including eight of the top 10. Those numbers go up to 13 and nine (!) if you don't count Shohei Ohtani.

Well, he's out there in the sense that he's still employed by the Twins at a below-market rate, so he's not exactly there for the asking. But yeah, he's certainly better than most if not all options being bandied about.

The funny part is the media outlets spilling 1,200 words over how Tim Tebow is a media distraction and not seeing the irony.
