But who is Eve?

Lots of action over the last several days while the staff at Mets Roster Central was busy doing other things. Draft choices signed and assigned, international amateurs brought into the fold, injured players coming back, and veteran pros brought in to replace Bingo sluggers Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil. Devin Mesoraco doesn't always strike. But when he strikes, he strikes late.

Struck him out! deGrom dialed it up to Murphy to put an end to the frivolity in the seventh. Gary Cohen. All-star.

Defense has been there for deGrom tonight. Not this inning, however.

Forget Seaver. Let's build a Nimmo statue.

Hang in there, Tony Randazzo.

Would it have been dirty pool if Rosario went for a takeout slide on Arrenado's double play?

Holy shit, Arrenado. He should have to play without a glove to make it fair for everybody else.

How terrific a fielder is Arrenado?

Drafted in the 29th round by the Pirates last year, young prospect Brock said fuck it and returned to school for his senior season. Taken this year in the 10th round by the Tigers, he elected to sign, making his debut yesterday. The prospect's last name? Deatherage! Brock Deatherage. If that isn't enough to make you shit yourself and die, his debut was today in the notoriously power-poor Gulf Coast League, and he hit THREE homers! Yeah, as a four-year college student, he's probably playing under his level, but that's the first three-homer game in the GCL in seven years! In his very first game! His pro debut! His wood bat debut! Against the Yankees' affiliate! His name is Brock Deatherage. Eat shit and die. [fimg=500]https://secure.milb.com/assets/images/7/3/0/281807730/cuts/960x540/cut.jpg[/fimg]

Yeah, but they can trade the clone at 24 at peak value!

I imagine nothing is imminent. Are options being explored? Certainly. And is a teardown one of those options? It has to be, as where they will be on July 30 is up in the air. If they weren't looking that option, they wouldn't be doing their jobs. But I'm rooting like hell for deGrom to win tonight, get a contract extension tomorrow morning, and never pitch in any uniform that isn't a trademarked with the Mets.

I hate listening to standard fucking. The thought of listening to fucking anything is chilling.

The Rox have also nicely used up a surfeit of pitching strength, struggling through a slugfest of a series in Texas. Yesterday, six twirlers took the mound, culminating in a disastrous showing by closer Wade Davis getting all of one out while giving up four walks, two hits, and four guns, and ultimately the game in the ninth, as the Rox lost, 13-12.

Edgy MD wrote: just like Nieuwenhuis 5 years ago today. same uni! Thinking the same. That team was even deader, I think. Has Bob Costas made a statement yet? Also notable is that the Arizona defense, which had been airtight and dazzing this series, made a few key miscues, but only when the uncharacteristically aggressive Mets put some pressure on them: Nimmo tearing ass down the line to beat out the throw to first as both the secondbaseman and firstbaseman rushedly played it poorly, Nimmo stealing second, Reyes beating out a bunt as the catcher panicked and picked it up. I also saw more of our lefthanders keeping the bat head back and shooting for the wide-open holes on the left side. Be aggressive, Mets! Kudos also to Gsellie for keeping his head after Smitty's miscue.

And since the Mets have his UCL and his rib, they can clone him if necessary.

I went for the 1967 as a matter of love. But one cool thing I never really thought of 1966 is that the reader is given Gil Hodges' perspective. It also strikes me that Hodges taking over as manager is the first time — seven short years into the life of the franchise — is the first case of an institutional icon returning to the organization to champion the cause.

I, of course, went for 1967. It's interesting how 1968 and 1982 echo each other — illustration featuring new manager that is hoped to complete formula of growing talent base, one summed up by a caption addressing the manager by first name and ending in "got you," and the other summed up by a caption addressing the manager by first name and ending in "got it."

Big fat dubble for Bautista.

But Reyes sees that the bunt single is a gift that we don't open nearly enough.
