I don't think this is the elephant in the room. And I don't think the Mets have a bad relationship with Scott Boras or his agency. Certainly not one that would lead Boras to guide his clients away from the Mets if they had the best offer.

batmagadanleadoff wrote: It's not Mo Vaughn hate. Its Fred Wilpon hate. The Yankees also needed a first baseman that off season. They went out and got the reigning MVP Jason Giambi. We get Fatso McFatso, who hadn't fucking played in a year and a half. Ferchrissakes already. Giambi wasn't the reigning MVP that offseason. Suzuki was. And, apart from looking at the Vaughn deal alone, the 2002 makeover was exactly the makeover demanded by everybody who was agitating at the Mets for their cheapness.

I don't think there's a mask there. I think you're looking at her hair flip.

Check out the giant Hostess cupcakes Mr. and Lady Met were dealing out.

Sheesh, he seemed like he was one decent year from HoF Status. He may still get in but he might have to wait until he's 70.

Fred certainly gave Omar 1.0 a chance to outshine the declining Phillips years by opening the purse circa 2005

Coco Crisp: Awarded lifetime membership on this team.

Centerfield wrote: Basically if you grew up Asian American, the holy triumvirate of "Songs I can do Without" are Turning Japanese, Kung Fu Fighting, and China Girl. And I know that the last one was meant as a satire to racism, but that irony was lost on most of the population. Kind of. Iggy Pop wrote it when he was recording the idiot and had fallen hard for Kuelan Nguyen, girlfriend of French actor/singer Jacques Higelin, as the two of them were staying at the same chateau as Iggy and Bowie. She wasn't, as the name may suggest, Chinese at all, but Vietnamese-born. To complicate matters a little more, Iggy ended up marry a young Japanese fan of his, and when Bowie remade the song, his video featured an Asian-Aussie model named Geeling Ng, whose name suggests a Cantonese background. Bowie ended up starting a torrid romance with her. So, sure, it's satire, I guess, but those damn rock stars get to have it both ways, and Iggy's still kinda weird. Nile Rogers wrote the goofy fake-Asian movie-cue guitar line that became the hook on Bowie's hit version, which is one of the more satirical parts of the song, I guess.

I'm certain he was on the verge of a AAA promotion when he got hurt. It's non-news to me too, but I guess it's a call that made sense to make early in order to maximize marketing potential.

There was an article at Deadspin some years back about how to hate all your team's offensive moves. This guy is over the hill. Let us reason that because his best years are apparently behind him, nothing good can possibly be ahead. This guy is at the top of his game. Let us reason that he'll demand a contract so long that he'll be an embarrassing corpse stinking up the clubhouse the last two or three years of it. This guy is a second-tier guy. Let us reason that the team doesn't really want to win. They just want to field a passable team and say they tried. This guy has been hurt. Let us reason that injuries never heal. And all players, once hurt, are doomed.

smg58 wrote: He has family in Fort Pierce FL, one town north of Port St. Lucie. He'd be a very popular addition down there.. I tend to put stock in this stuff. When the difference is big money, you'd think it wouldn't matter much what backwater the team trains in. But I correctly predicted that Rick Ankiel would ultimately be a Met, although he never got to St. Lucie as one.

He's been mentioned in other threads. Lefty who can close but isn't a brand name closer, coming off a poor season, did well under Callaway in Cleveland, has a Yankee taint. Like many late-inning lefties, he does a good job keeping the ball in the park, but has been known to walk a few.

Donaldson is a good option, unless they are shy about broken thirdbasemen. I like to think bringing him in would be something analogous to bringing in Ventura, who had also returned successfully from a long absence due to a leg injury, and while folks were encouraged that he came back, it was the Mets who gambled and gave him a multi-year deal.

The unwritten rule with inducting managers has historically been that two championships get you in. They've seemingly relaxed that with the likes of Earl Weaver (one championship plus a second one won by his team during the Altobelli Interregnum), and Whitey Herzog (one championship plus one lost on a lousy call). So maybe Davey (one championship plus a terrible call in right field robbing his ass of a pennant and possibly a second championship) gets some consideration in a new light. Championships aren't everything, though. Managers can only do what they can do.

Man, was I flunking biology badly until Brain McCann agreed to be my tutor. In exchange, I helped him with how to dress and talk to girls.

My crystal ball suggests the Mets are more likely to bring in a Wilson — either Ramos or Contreras. Unsure what the Cubs might want in a deal for a young, all-star catcher who also plays the infield corners and the outfield corners, I'm guessing Ramos.

That's what I was thinking. He wouldn't be the first executive that joined an organization initially as a coach, getting a front row look at the talent and processes and philosophies, and then moving up to management.

“I think he is a Hall of Famer," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Monday. "Whether he has been inducted or not, I think it’s important that I believe that the committee and people who have the power to votes be hard pressed not to acknowledge this was a transformative figure in all of sports not just baseball so I can’t imagine that he doesn’t warrant a nomination. ... Bottom line he was very impactful for this franchise and industry and clearly a Hall of Famer from my viewpoint.” I feel like I could break down this robotic, Kool-Aid-guzzling statement for about a month.

Me and Mrs. Jones: We gotta be extra careful, that do we don't build our hopes up too high.

Assistant batting coach usually hangs out in the clubhouse during games, as players file back to take extra robot BP in the cage between innings. "Stay back!" "Don't overcommit!" I get the feeling that they're not particularly easy to fire, even when their boss gets the heave-ho (Roessler only got the hitting coach job when his superior rolled), because the manager realizes he's scarcely seen or talked to the guy in months so it seems unfair to just fire him when you haven't really directly evaluated him. My guess is that he's welcome back, but if the new batting instructor wants to go in a different direction, he gets re-assigned. I wonder if Amaro applied for the GM job and didn't get an interview.

Thus lowers the curtain on Roessle Mania. It's too bad they waited until Jeremy Reed was off the market.
