Teammates have complained about his stinky attitude since before his first game. And beyond not hustling, sometimes he just shuts it down. Don Mattingly has also accused him of "grabbing something every time he strikes out, suggesting that he pretends to be hurt to cover up for failure.

According to the team release, Rojas "will be in uniform and will serve as a conduit between the front office and coaching staff on all issues including game preparation, strategy and analytics." The Mets have suggested this role is about "catching up" to other teams, who employ a similar type of coach, or an "administrative coach." I'm not sure a guy up from AA with his first MLB coaching ranks will have the juice to be the go-between from the clubhouse to the administration. Maybe Amaro would have been a good fit there. But I think they also probably want a Spanish-first coach on the staff. Personally, I'd rather see a catching instructor on the staff, a role that hasn't been filled since (I think) 2011, when the role was (again, I think) part of bullpen coach Jon Debus' portfolio. I also think Bob Geren unofficially took up the role for a season when he was bench coach in 2015, but no catchers have haunted the staff since then, and d'Arnaud and Plawecki have had to make do without a dugout coach to guide their development.

We have a coaching staff, including a new quality control dude. Also, with Flores gone, I've moved Smitty back to the infield unit and T.J. to the outfielders. I don't think Rivera's any more of an outfielder than Smith is, but if this is the roster the Mets deploy, then Smith would more likely get the bulk of his time at first, and T.J. would see more time in the outfield. At least more than Smiff. Yeah, see, that's two people right there. I even liked George Foster. Doug Sisk. I liked some of them more than others, but the only guy on the team I recall disliking was Dykstra.

It's like, line up the douchebags this winter. The Mets are coming.

I've got no problem with giving him a contract. The projected value is certainly non-negligible. And it's a single year. The most recent information about him isn't the only information. He's still got offensive and defensive value to project. The injuries are certainly frustrating, and could certainly continue, but it's not like anybody's reported a high re-injury rate for position players after UCL surgery. Besides, he's all heart. And that's something too.

Yeah, I went with my best inference of the lineup that Callaway wants. And last I checked, he wanted Rosario in the leadoff spot. I'm sure we'll know more as the winter develops. (Funny that the Mets had three main leadoff hitters last year, each lasting almost exactly 1/3 of the season. Conforto was the leadoff hitter in April and May. Nimmo was the leadoff hitter in June and July. Rosario was the leadoff hitter in August and September.)

The job is his if he can bite down on it.

Already suggested above.

Ban the NO DOUBLES outfield alignment!!

Willets Point, come collect your prize.

Well, that's fair in that he's probably coming off the best season, but a year ago, Gary Sanchez was the man, and now he can't get arrested. I think he needs more of a track record to claim consensus supremacy.

If, by "best catcher," we mean to measure him by his defensive contributions, I'd certainly put Wilson Contreras and Salvador Perez ahead of him, at least. Maybe he's got an argument for "best non-Venezuelan catcher."

I always thought he looked like Dwight Gooden. In the face and in his motion, right down to the way his neck distorted when he hit his release point and suddenly made him look 60 years old. But he sure didn't have Gooden's confidence. He threw nothing but strikes coming up through the minors, and then, upon his big league debut, lost the plate completely.

Who is the Mets most accomplished righthanded-hitting firstbaseman? Kingman? Clendennon? Huskey?

The last few weeks have seen a handful of Mets minor league free agents getting plucked away. The curious one to me is Nabil Crismatt, and not just because every championship team has a guy named Nabil. The Mariners have done a good job reviving the careers of guys they plucked off the Mets' scrap pile, such as Erik Goeddel and Chasen Bradford, which makes me even more nervous that they knew what they were doing on this Canó trade thingie. Jerry DiPoto is claiming that the Mariners had Kelenic down as their highest rated player in last year's draft.

The paradoxical logic would almost be worth it just to hear Jeff yell "CHEESESTEAK LICKING MUTHAFUCKAS!!!!!" at a public press conference.

Good play. Obviously the real art-collecting Mets owner was Mrs. Payson. I looked through Doubleday's estate auction, and his art was a bunch of smokey pictures of snotty young men on horseback, sometimes chasing foxes. I think the only art the Wilpons have collected is Howe.

It could be. The team has a lotta shortstops in the pipeline, but trading the one that's farthest along means that much more time waiting on develpment.

It's also probably more true that every year the Madoff situation is in the rearview is another year that the Wilpons gain back more freedom from their creditors and more control of their assets.
