How can getting three first base calls overturned in a widely watched post-season game help his suit?

I'm curious to see what impact this game has on Angel Hernandez' career. Pedro Martinez threw him under the subway train after the game.

Is this the MEMORIES OF DAVID WRIGHT thread or are we still processing?

Perfect example.

There are different types of suspicion!

The 51s season, like that of the parent club, ended just as they were playing some of their best ball. The Aliens won 7 of their last 8, boosting them to 20-13 from August 1 until the end of the season. The late season surge allowed them to finish their season in the black, at 71-69, just above sea-level. This was their first winning season since 2014, and a 15-game improvement from 2017's 56-86 squad. Maybe they’re leaving just as manager Tony DeFrancesco has figured out the trick to winning in an offense-happy park in an offense-happy league. But I guess few are sorry to leave Vegas, apart from the odd minor league vet slugger trying to pad his stats for one last go at the bigs, but those guys can still come to Vegas. They just have to sign with Oakland now. Speaking of minor league vet sluggers, Zack Borenstein was a blue plate special for Vegas all summer. While Jeff McNeil came and went like a comet, and Peter Alonso did everything you could ask and more in his half season, it was Zack who gave a full season of productive fun, going .248 / .357 / .477 // .834 in 572 plate appearances, slugging 25 homers and driving in 90. The batting average ain’t a lot, but the combination of a sweet batting eye and slugging bat gets him named as our CPF Las Vegas 51 Offensive player of the year. The 51s got an even better mercenary partial season from Patrick Kivlehan (.314 / .372 / .588 // .959) but he too came up short in the appearance department, joining the team for only 98 games and 390 plate appearances. No, Borenstein is our man. The 51s agreed, even as Alonso won the fan-voted MVP, the team named Borenstein as winning their official MVP trophy. Our pitcher of the year is Drew Gagnon, who is also the recipient of the team’s honor as well as being honored by the organization with the Las Vegas Sterling Award. A 6-6 record with a 4.57 ERA seems like dry hash browns at first glance, but you translate that performance over 157 2/3 innings in Las Vegas (along with a win and six shutout innings in Bingo), and you have a guy who has stepped up. He’s sure seemed to have passed Chris Flexenberg on the organizational depth chart, and by the end of spring training, he may well have passed Corey Oswalt, who spent the last two months of the season the Mets’ rotation. That ERA, well, it’s comparable to what Noah Syndergaard and Jake deGrom put up their first time around in Las Vegas. Look at the strikeouts and walks. That’s 167 and 43, respectively, for Drew. That plays! So, look for Drew — along with his namesake Drew Smith, and his geeky friend Jacob Rhame — to be among the last of the 51s pitchers to break through for the Mets. Yeah, I know Rhame has done squat for the big squad, but wait 'til 2019. Maybe, but his early-season performance certainly suggested to me that that he was on the field too early. It may just be coincidence, or maybe he was going to be rusty no matter when he came back, but he was getting murdered by hard inside stuff before the break.

The Yankees Crossed a Hotel Strike Picket Line in Boston

We need more black superheroes without "Black" in their names.

That's pretty cool that the shutout prevented the deGrom season sweep. Had the manager lifted Syndergaard again after six or seven innings, or had the offense put up five runs instead of one, the voting might have shifted a tick, and history may have been deGrom's.

I don't need any clarification. If there is to be a restructuring, it would make all the sense in the world that it would take place after the establishment of a new management team. I feel confident that a player on the "Physically Unable to Perform List" will not count against the 40-man roster limit.

Mets too.

Swarzie was probably coming off the best year of anybubby. Split over two teams, too. Alas, he doesn't have a history of pitching two good, healthy years in a row.

Keuchel is good-ish. But he's coming off a fallback year so it's an open question whether he still has it. Signing Donaldson would be somewhat analogous to the Ventura signing. A pretty unquestionable bat playing on questionable legs at third base.

Is Dallas Keuchel a top player? Is Josh Donaldson?

Originally named Municipal Stadium when it opened in 1934, it was renamed (like Long Island's beloved MacArthur Airport) in honor of General Douglas MacArthur in 1942. That unfortunately was long before the Jimmy Webb song was ever written. But the park that the song was written about was also renamed in honor of the general, having originally been named Westlake Park up until, you guessed it, 1942. Toward the beginning of The Wonder Years' first episode, Daniel Stern's voiceover narration notes that Kevin's junior high, like many across the country, was being renamed in honor of Robert F. Kennedy. I wonder if it was like that in Spring 1942. Everything was being named MacArthur. "Come to MacArthur Deli and buy one of our famous MacArthur sandwiches! Don't forget to ask for the MacArthur sauce!"

Cabrera was good. Walker was good-ish. Alejandro de Aza was not so good.

I imagine part of the thinking with the lack of appearances before his start is that they consider him fragile and didn't want him hurting himself before his tribute game. Also, if it takes a lot of prep work just to get loose enough to pinch-hit, maybe he just didn't have it in him.

Yeah, I thought he swung when he should have swung in his few plate appearances. Showed good pitch recognition. It just didn't happen, but he was clearly as ready to play as he was going to be, and that's to his credit.

Man, Lynn and Cobb! That sounds like it could have been some great depth in centerfield!

Ceetar wrote: Second half offense was 'fine'. We don't really have as far to go as it might seem. The plummet in June was extreme, and is making everything else seem kinda worse. Even just one great hitter, like Machado, and some talented platoon type bench guys would make a world of difference. The pitching is/can be pretty great. Even a lot of the disasters of the middle of the year were bullpen blown ones. Hold down those early leads and things look a lot different. Also, not a few of those blowups were attached to the Mets going to the pen early when they didn't have to, to preserve recovering arms. He also used bullpen back-enders in high-leverage situations, when the featured guys hadn't been overused, but were being held to a strict innings pace. (Gsellie smelted down the last month anyhow, but hey, first year as a big-league reliever and all.) Hopefully that won't be as necessary in 2019, and Callaway will be at least a little more aggressive with innings.

Ramos is a free agent, and given that he's coming off of surgery for a torn labrum, it ain't the best time to be in the market. I suppose he'll be happy to get a major league contract offer.

Yeah, he beat those teenagers down! With regard to upgrading the offense, most anybody can be moved to make room for incoming talent, but the softest spots currently seem to be catcher and third base. But I'm as interested in a philosophical upgrade as I am in a talent upgrade. I'd say I was actually more interested in the former, but often the former comes in tandem with the latter.
