I think we failed to mention in this space the September 26 release of Binghamton infielder Andrew Ely. Ely, who came to the Mets in the AAA portion of the Rule V Draft in 2017, got something of a raw deal, having hurt his shoulder, but being counseled by the Mets to play hurt and put his surgery off until the offseason. His offseason came and, according to his tweets, he got released before the Mets could get stuck with the bill. If you're like me, that doesn't seem cool. Rookie manager (and early Edgy DC adoptee) Sean Ratliff largely treaded water with his Kingsport Mets in his first season managing a squad. His final record, 33-35, dipped below .500, but Pythagoras says that shouldn't have been, and well, you can argue with Pythagoras, but considering he died circa 495 BC, good luck in getting satisfaction. This was nonetheless good enough for second place in the West Division of the Appalachian League, seven games behind the Elizabethton Twins, so whatever success they didn't manage to have, they were still close enough to smell, and it earned them aa playoff spot, with which they battled ably in their first-round loss One guy who didn't smell at all was starting pitcher Willy Taveras. No sir. He was not only effective virtually every time out, but he had all the run support luck that Jacob deGrom missed out on, turning his 2.93 ERA into a gobsmacking 5-0 record. Yeah, he didn't pile up the strikeouts (6.7/9), but he tamped down on the walks (1.3/9), kept the ball in the park (0.6 HR/9), and walked away with win after win. You honor that sort of performance. Yeah, pitching wins are misrepresentative, but it's not like he hasn't performed in his previous stops in the Dominican Summer League and the Gulf Coast League. On his career, he's 17-6 with a 2.55 ERA. You know what that has gotten him on Mets prospect lists? Bupkis. He's typically outside the top 30. But that's going to change. Those numbers are too close to Dwight Gooden's rookie season to ignore. He's about to blow up. But I hear you. You want more sizzle with your steak. Well José Butto went 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 32 2/3 innings before getting called up to Brooklyn. Due disclosure, he didn't do well there. But he's set the DSL on fire previously. He'll perform. I hear you, though. You want offense. Well you get plenty of it from Mark Vientos. The third baseman/shortstop whacked an impressive 11 homeruns and 52 RBI in just 60 games, en route to an .878 OPS. You like to see that kind of swatting in the lower minors, especially from infielders. Did somebody mention infielders?! Well, let's talk about Luis Santana! St. Louis helped bolster a strong offensive attack with a well-rounded .348 / .446 / .471 // .917. Along with Gavin Garay and Shervyn Newton, the K-Mets were hitting all around the infield. Look for more offense going forward from a team managed by a converted batting coach, and if you happen to be riding south down the Appalachian Ridge next summer, swing by The Model City and take in the action. If I was in that office, every Met, in order of acquisition or appearance, would be throwing out the first pitch all year. When the player is deceased, I'd invite the living descendents to take the honor. Hell, even after I got to somebody who is too disgraced to show his head in public, like Ambiorix Burgos (which might take a decade or so), I'd still invite his kids. Hobie? I'd invite him to the ballpark and buy him a house and treat him like a king.

I think that sometimes, when a relatively new guy in management makes inquiries about the players from his past organization, he can be looking through rose-colored glasses, and lead the organization to overstate his value. That said, Red Murff came over from Houston and convinced to organization to gobble up Jerry Grote, and all they paid for him was Tom Parsons + cash.

It's like when SMU football got the "death penalty" back in the 80s only not really since they play football now and have been for many years. He was eligible to apply for reinstatement after two. I'm sure that was a policy the union insisted on. Considering the shelf life of an athlete, there's really no point to allowing an opportunity for reinstatement if a guy has to wait 15 or 20 years to be eligible.

Detroit News reports Lewin is not a contender for the Fox Sports Detroit opening.

I voted for THOR SUBJECT, but THOR THUBJECT would have been better.

He's also somebody who has never quite gotten the lesson of Matt Harvey, carrying himself as if he's bullet proof, not knowing Karma is coming at the back of his head like a massive hammer.

I would consider it more of a George Lucas initiative than a Marvel initiative. But yeah, the only big screen Marvel character before that I can think of is a bunch Captain America single reel serials from World War II.

O'Rourke is in a good position. As he's coming in on a minor league deal, I wouldn't project him to make the team even if he wasn't coming off a year largely spent in rehab, but seeing as Daniel Zamora is the only lefthanded reliever on the roster, he may well have signed with the right team. Fernando Valenzuela won them both in the same season, although Tom Seaver and Jim Palmer and Tim Raines might have felt that Fernandomania overinfluenced the voters.

'Twas an important bounceback year in 2018 for the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Coney Island squad hadn't had a losing season in any of their first 14 seasons. It was a terrific track record of quality ball from the Babies. But then, in 2015, the worm turned, and in the next three years, they turned in three sub-.500, second devision campaigns, reaching a nadir with a 24-52 record in 2017. So when I salute their 40-35 record this past season, I celebrate more than their .533 winning percentage. The returned from the Cliffs of Irrelevance and probably saved Edgardo Alfonzo's managing career. They did it, as usual for the Mets, with pitching first. The 'Clones featured a 1-2 pitching punch of Christian James and Jaison Vilera. The former threw 71 2/3 to the tune of a 2.01. He seemingly did it with smoke and mirrors, because the peripherals aren't quite there. He struck out 45 and walked 20 in those 71 2/3 innings. He also gave up but four homers. But while the 2016 14th-rounder does likely move on to the prospect lists (at least, the ones that go deeper), he'll be no quickie. Having no such pedigree problems is teammate Vilera. Brooklyn was Vilera's playground this season as he put up as sub-2.00 ERA for the third straight season. Vilera was dominant (deGrominant?) in all aspects —not only charting a 1.83 ERA over 73 2/3 innings, but whiffing 78, walking 22, and giving up just a single homer. The weird part is his performance actually raised his career ERA to 1.78, while mostly starting. He even has a 13-4 W-L record for his career. A solid pen was led by lefthander Kevin Smith and righthander Tommy Wilson. While neither was in Mallrats or Back to the Future they really made their names their own this summer by the beach, as Smith gave up just two runs in 23 2/3 innings, for a Eckersley-esque ERA of 0.76. He struck out 28, walked six, and WHIPped to the astonishingly low 0.761. Griff Tannen was nearly as good, putting up a 1.23 ERA in 22 innings, striking out 27 and walking but seven. That's the power of love! On offense, rookie Ross Adolph got past his regrettable name to put up some team-leading numbers, the recent 12th-round draft pick out of The University of Toledo slugged seven homers while slashing .276 / .348 / .509 // .857. A combination of 12 triples (leading the New York-Penn League) and 14 stolen bases suggests the outfielder may have an intriguing power/speed combination. His outfield All-Star buddy was Jose Medina. The 21-year-old Dominican had been over his head in a few months in Columbia in 2017, but he was young enough to step back for a reset, and that's what he found in Brooklyn, going .271 / .342 / .429 // .770. Michael Wilbon is an idiot. Has been for a long time. Either that or he writes and says idiotic things to get attention. This, by the way, is pretty cool. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Wait a minute ... where are the other two Seavers? For that matter, what happened to Dickey's arm?

Alex Cora and Chris Woody were both frequently tagged by the guys in the booth as future managers.

The thing is that from the minute he came up, his only real detour has been that ulner nerve thing at the end of 2016. But then he came back seemingly 100% even after folks questioned his velocity the next spring. Apart from that, there was a 2 1/2-start hiccup in mid-2017 during a western swing when he couldn't get anybody out. But mostly, he's invariably brought his A-game every fifth day for something close to five seasons. He's got a better WHIP as a Met than Tom Seaver. Than anybody!! With even fair-to-average luck, he'd already be among the team's top ten winningest pitchers.

WAR is the name of two different stats that profess to measure the same thing. They come from two different sources — Fangraphs and Baseball-reference — so they are distinguished colloquially as fWAR and bWAR. As both are proprietary, it's not altogether clear what differences they bring, but most (not all) prefer fWAR. They seem to have more sophisticated defensive measurements, though that doesn't necessarily mean more accurate.

The commissioner stepping in seems like only an invitation to get more and more sophisticated. Cameras be everywhere! I'm no sure why they've generally disallowed electronic communication. Why can't the manager wear a headset and speak to his bullpen coach at the drop of a hat? Why can't the catcher tap a sensor under his chest protector and a voice in the pitcher's ear says "slider away"? I guess the resistance is from a sense of preserving the pastoral elegance of the game, and that's not nothing. But it's passing strange that a manager can put on a headset and speak to the booth and to the world in the third inning, but he can't speak to his staff that way when the game is on the line. Or that a third-base coach has to use an elaborate-but-plainly visible series of hand gestures to call for a squeeze, but the ump has all available communications techto call an office across the country to determine if the squeeze was successful.

Mookie's LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mookie-wilson-66271555/ (Didn't he and Rosa own a freight hauling business for a while there? And why are there no references to his gospel album?)

The subtext on that for me is that Tom Seaver has completely checked out, at least as far as paying attention to baseball, or at least the Mets.

He seemed to be pretty slump-proof.

Maybe plug up the holes and redundancies the trade would create by adding Frazier for Chatwood or somebody. Did I just write that?

I shamelessly went for all three Flores covers.
