Just saying the name Mallex Smith improves my virility by about 34%. So there's that.

I missed that. You get free fries the next time the Knicks score 120.

Frayed Knot wrote: You don't want Cespedes OR Conforto to be platoon players - and certainly not in one with each other!! And yet, that's still more appealing than giving 2/3 of the centerfield starts to Dominic Smith. Oh, Mallex. Never mind.

I think it takes far more work than it's worth to construct and feed false stories of dealings to the media. What possible benefit is there?

I think keeping Jeff Wilpon close to Shake Shack would be a more productive strategy. #7, push back the railing on the Party City Deck 20-30 inches, so outfielders can reach over and past the wall.

This is all true, but it's also possible the troubles that Smitty has endured the last two years were his crucible and he's ready to thrive, while the same crucible is ahead of Alonso. I'm not saying that's so, but while you don't want to keep kicking the can down the road, I don't think this is a choice the Mets will be necessarily forced to make right away.

No, but pulling and slices are. Both Tom and Brodie, Brodie and Tom, are the progeny of big shot golfers. Tom's father Charles was an amateur ace in the depression years, winning the California Amateur and Northern California Golf Association Amateur titles in 1933 and the Southern California Golf Association Amateur in 1934 becoming only the second dude to hold all thre e titles. He had previously won the great big NCGA National Championship. He also walked home with the trophy from the U.S. Amateur Championships and the Walker Cup, a tournament named in honor of the father of future Mets minority owner George Herbert Walker, Jr. He established the Seaver Golf Academy and ultimately died in Pebble Peach, which is a pretty hardcore place for a golfer to die. Brodie's dad, Jeff started a career as a professional golfer in the early seventies, but getting your ass kicked by Nicklaus, Palmer, and Hogan has limited appeal, and he went into business. But the bug never left him, and after succeeding wildly in the business world, he joined the senior circuit in the mid-nineties, joining the Champions Tour and (mostly) the European Seniors Tour. Undeterred by the one-two punch of Eddie Holland and Tommy Horton, he walked off with the the first ever (and last ever!) cup at the 2000 (and only!) Tui Golf Championship Fleesensee, following the David Soul/David Hasselhoff career track of Americans who make it big in Germany.

I applaud and celebrate Jim Riggleman for his long and successful track record of not being Gary DiSarcina. The Mets still have two coaching positions to fill. As for Peterson, if you dread seeing Tim Tebow, know that the Teeb woke up this morning as the seventh man on the Mets' outfiled depth chart, but goes to bed as #8. Brodie is from Southern Cal, while Fresno is in the Central Valley. BVW went north to Stanford for college, while Tom went south to USC. Bloom went to Yale, so you may be right about the smarty-pants thing. Brodie's signed a minor league free agent, and I imagine Tom signed some vineyard workers.

What do Brodie Van Wagenen and Tom Seaver have in common?

I think the 2018 Mets proved very well that strikeouts are different from other outs. Actually, I think the 2018 Everybody proved it.

Yeah, it certainly can be seen as an attempt at clearing the players left behind. But man, who leaves out trainers? I remember a story, maybe from Ron Darling, that portrayed Rickey Henderson as a peripheral figure's best friend at post-season allocation time. The post-season roster would gather and the rep would go down the list of shuttle-riders, clubbies, groundskeepers, and everybody, and at every name, Rickey would yell, "Full share!"

I went for Berkman. He could have tacked on a few more sunset years to pad the totals, but he was incorrigibly productive.

Stupid is as stupid does. I liked the idea of Donaldson. But we'll see what's next.

Indeed, there are four options already for the opening day/#1 firstbaseman. So a backup there isn't really a priority. But he plays some outfield, and Syracuse is very thin on outfielders. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mets immediately turned around and tried to put him through waivers themselves.

Despite sending all their best players away midseason to become redundancies with the DSL Mets 1, the DSL Mets 2 still managed to finish 34-37 in the San Pedro Division. Most of the best players, you've already seen in the summary for DSL 1, but it's worth while to take a second look at catcher Endy Rodriguez. Before going over to the A-team to backup, Endy was doing a Rod Carew imitation with the Deucers, going .385 / .444 / .487 // .932. Lookit that batting average! Yeah, it was only 45 plate appearances. He also caught 45% of would-be base stealers, which is something Rod Carew never did. Not bad for an 18-year-old, kid. Now go to Kingsport and do it again. Also, we haven't seen a lot of outfielders succeeding, either in the upper levels or down her in the lower ones, but 17-year-old center- and left-fielder Eduardo Salazar had a promising season, going .354 / .413 / .402 // .815 in 92 plate appearances before (again) he was added to the Mets 1. Bloody thieves. How about starting pitching? It couldn't be as good as the DSL 1 squad, right? Well, maybe not, but it wasn't due to Christofer Dominguez. Portsider Christofer went 5-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 48 innings, ultimately finding his way to DSL 1 AND the GCL. You want a lefthanded reliever that can make you jump up and shout "Amen!"? Then let me introduce you to Daniel Guzman. Danny Guzzles, which is what he's called by absolutely nobody, I imagine, was damn near bloody perfect. Seventeen times he was deployed by Manager Yucary De La Cruz, and almost all those times, he came back untouched, despite usually throwing at least two innings, ultimately finishing with a 0.70 ERA in 38.1 innings. Are you politically engaged? If so, lobby your members of Congress to pass a law disallowing an organization from packing one of their DSL teams mid-season at the expense of the other. If you're assigned to one team or the other, that should be your team until you move up to the stateside leagues. Thank you for playing Dominican as a Second Language this season. See you next year. As in 2017, in 2018, the Mets produced a Dominican Summer League juggernaut. Last year it was the DSL 2 Mets squad tearing through the league at a .704 clip (50-21), this year, their DSL 1 kinsmen tore the league down at a less alarming but still torrid .653 pace (47-25). The difference this year is that halfway through the season, when they realized the DSL 1 team was the better unit, they transferred a bunch of the better DSL 2 players over there to stack the team (see 7/27, above). That seemed really uncool. If one organization has two teams competing in the same league, intersquad transfers should be disallowed. Some guys really answered the challenge, though. Andres German, for instance, was 2-2 with a 3.13 ERA when he received his mid-season transfer to the DSL 1 team, and then he became almost unbreachable, storming home with a 3-0 record and a 0.76 ERA over six starts in his second half. He finished at 5-2 and 1.97, striking out 58, walking 15, and giving up just one teenaged homer. This made for a real nasty 1-2 punch in the DSL South Division, along with Christofer Dominguez, who started 10 games with a 6-1 record and a 1.36 (!!) ERA over his 53 innings. Combined with a bullpen that included the fiery-monikered Jefferson Escorcha (1.57 ERA, 57 1/3 innings, 63 strikeouts, 0.76 WHIP), Jhonfran Escalona (1.88 ERA, 48 IP, 0.78 WHIP), and Daniel Guzman (1.17 ERA in 46 13 innings), there was a good chance that, if you caught this squad, things would zip along without a whole lot of offense interfering with the proceedings. Which doesn’t mean the Mets themselves couldn’t put up fireworks. Catcher Andres Regnault was the very embodiment of an all-star, going .333 / .420 / .573 // .993 in 224 trips to the plate. He led a very impressive catching squad that also included Juan Loyo (.779 OPS) and Endy Rodriguez (.775 OPS) WRITE THESE NAMES DOWN! And if you want a little middle infield action, check out second baseman Felix Valerio. (A second baseman named Felix is always a good thing!) The Flexer led the squad with 114 total bases, going .319 / .409 / .433 // .843 in a season that looks like it catapult him to Brooklyn sometime soon. Who knows, with Caribbean teenagers, right? But when the present is dry, look to the future, even if you’re looking to guys several years away. Why do the call it the Gulf Coast League anyhow? The Mets are on the East side of the peninsula, facing the Atlantic Ocean, or perhaps more accurately, the Sargasso Sea. I'm sure several other teams on the Eastern coast of Florida are represented, but those long bus rides to the league's nominal base has to be a tough burden. But represent, the Mets did, though they didn't really represent much. At 24-31, they finished a half game behind the third-place GCL Marlins in the GCL League's Gulf Coast League. The first stop for most US-born high school draftees and survivors of the Mets Dominican Academy, the GCL Mets shone brightest during the short-but-viciously-torrid debuts of Mets' top draftees Jarred Kelenic (.413 / .451 / .609 // 1.060 in 51 plate appearances) and Simeon Woods-Richardson (2-0 with 2 saves, a pristine 0.00 ERA, 30 strikeouts and 8 walks in a not-insignificant 22 2/3 innings.) The two teenagers would enjoy quick promotions in their first short season, which might have kept the team from making a late run, but in the end, they were 15.5 games out. You don't want to stick around the GCL too long. You might become an institution. Attacking spheres on a more long-term basis was 17-year-old Ronny Mauricio, one of several high-bonus foreign shortstop prospects in the Mets' pipeline. Ronny was second on the team with 49 games, making himself noticed with a .279 / .307 / .421 // .728 line. We need more walks, Ronny. And when you do get on, maybe the running game isn't for you. A 1-for-7 stolen base rate isn't going to cut it. Already mentioned in reviews of other affiliates is Willy Taveras. During his four starts with the GCL squad, Willy just deGrommed it up. Totally. We're talking about a 1.23 ERA in 22 innings as a starter. He struck out 25, walked 8, gave up but a single homer, but remains on the outside looking in on Mets prospect sheets. You can ignore his dazzling record in his young career, you can write him off as too small because he's 5'11", but Little Willy won't go home. He in fact drives them silly with his star shoe shimmy shuffle down. Also making his mark as a starter is Oscar Rojas. Yeah, a 3.83 ERA isn't going to send skyrockets into flight, but his 42 1/3 innings led the team, and he also gave up but a single homer before getting a promotion to Kingsport. The GCL Mets share facilities with the St. Lucie Mets, regular going on the road when the Florida State League team is at home and vice versa, so big league Mets rehabbing down at the spring facility will often catch a few games with GCL teenagers if they need to get some games in but don't want to hop on a long bus ride to Vero Beach, but only two big league Mets had to appear for (and buy dinner for) the GCLers this past summer, Yoenis Céspedes and Eric Hanhold. Let's hope that number falls to zero in 2019. I'm calling NO HUH-Way on the first part, though it's probably less worthy of being a deciding factor than your team's own assessment of him. As for the second part, true enough, though I tend to think it was also Matt Williams' fault.

You can now!

So, right now in the Crane Pool, it's Rivera and nobody. What's the case against Roy Halladay?

I assume because of your analysis of his track record and scouting reports. Also, count me as a fan who won't be impressed by a Mets team that just goes out there and gets a Kimbrel or Britton. Landing name-brand closers has been a fool's errand for this team.

Later Vizquel was a heckuva fielder, and I booed to see an All-Star Game with a shortstop-filled AL roster, which Torre responded to by moving Vizquel to second, and keeping Jeter at short, but I don't think Vizquel was Smith's equal, on offense or defense.
