Houston currently has two prospects in MLB.com's 'Pipeline' Top-10 [OF Kyle Tucker; RHP Forest Whitley]... Forest Whitley is over-rated. Forest Whitley is the Confederate Civil War officer plagued by the Peter Principle. He was a good brigade and division commander, and along with being a scion of the respected Whitley family, this was enough to ensure his promotion to commander of the Army of Tennessee when battlefield attrition created just the sort of leadership vacuum that sucks up mediocrities like Forest. Nobody could say two bad words about Whitley, beloved equally by his colleagues and the men under his command. But the record is the record, and following the surrender of Atlanta, it was BAM! BAM! BAM! Whitley would lose every major battle he commanded in. Allatoona Pass, Spring Hill, Franklin, Nashville. There's no coming back from that. MLB Pipeline, my ass.

I always thought Grant Roberts would have made a good sell-high candidate. Whoah!

A babyface who would try the Ricky Shroeder technique at looking more malignant, rocking some chin fuzz and scowling. It only made him look more baby-faced. With Gerson Bautista heading to Seattle as part of the Canó trade, Stephen Nogosek will be the only remaining member of the fraternity of Red Sox pitchers sent down the Interstate as part of the Addison Reed package. No-Go, who was an AFL player this fall, will be heading to camp trying to escape St. Lucie and stick with Bingo.

While I don't share this notion, one thing about Harpy is that he's a younger free agent than most, having come up as a teenager, so not all of the usual caveats apply.

Which positions do them damn Steamer forecasts present the most success from? Well, I tried to do the math, with some interpolation and induction and real Fields Medal stuff like that. Takeaways: Steamy is real bearish on the viability of the Mets' catching situation, and sees all available candidates getting less PT than you might expect, and so leaves 18 starts behind the dish as a problem to be solved. 2018 breakthrough dudes like Nimrod and McNelt are also grizzlies. The team remains kind of thin in the outfield, compared to the infield, and I ended up giving a chunk of McNally's PT to to right field. Who knows how that'll break, however. The notion is that the team will have to find 50 or more starts in the outfield, and they don't think Gregor Blanco is going to fill that role. They do see playing time for Rajai Davis, but of the utterly futile kind. Steamer thinks that Smith is an absolute load over at first base, but will still get plenty of time to prove just what a load he is. While more is expected of Alfonso, they don't exactly see him as a savior. Wow, not a lot of that is good news! Bryce Harper might not be coming, but an outfielder of some stripe might be. I'd move the Unisphere to be remounted on the upper right field concourse, where the Coca-Cola sign is. I could be wrong, but I don't think the pedestal would take away too much space from the food court below, and diners Could eat in the shadow of the globe. Players could take their shots at becoming the first guy to hit Burundi or Austria or Thailand with a mammoth homer. (In my scenario, the Unisphere very slowly rotates.)

Edgy MD wrote: My crystal ball suggests the Mets are more likely to bring in a Wilson — either Ramos or Contreras. Unsure what the Cubs might want in a deal for a young, all-star catcher who also plays the infield corners and the outfield corners, I'm guessing Ramos. Holy shit, my crystal ball was right!

Greinke is interesting. For a guy who is admittedly mentally flakey, he's been real stable, winning 13-to-19 games each of the last eight years, pitching 200 innings in six of them, and bagging two ERA titles six years apart. He's got five straight golden gloves, and he knows how to handle a bat. Plus he's within pretty solid reach of his 200th win. And he costs (dear GOD!) $104.5 million over the next three years.

I'd like to have him aboard, certainly, but hitting the free agent market for big time starting pitching too often seems to be about paying out big time for the seasons the guy has already had, and really eating it as the contract progresses. Certainly Pedro Martinez and Johan Santana provided some thrills, but both had to be carried broken across the finish line despite being handled with kid gloves. Which I guess is my way of saying that, if the Mets really have money for Keuchel, I'd rather see it go into the Harper fund. And as noted often enough, I really don't like Harper.

The real alarmism with Omar Minaya's signing of Latinos really began when Beltran was asked, and answered, his first press question in Spanish. But yeah, Minaya's Dominican background made him a suspect right out of the gate.

Matt dD. is currently a free agent.

One of the oldest plots in the book. Two song-and-dance men are killing it in a partnership until a female joins the act and comes between them.

Four and five at the moment are something akin to Kevin Kaczmarski and T.J. Rivera. Non-roster players such as Gregor Blanco, Rajai Davis, and Braxton Lee hope to displace them. The Mets let go of (or didn't re-sign) of a LOT of upper-level outfielders in the offseason. A lot will change, but as it currently sits, opening day should look something like: New York Brandon Nimmo* Michael Conforto* T.J. Rivera Yoenis Céspedes (injured) Kevin Kaczmarski* Juan Lagares Syracuse Gregor Blanco* Tim Tebow* Braxton Lee* Rajai Davis Patrick Biondi* Binghamton Matt Winaker* Quinn Brodey* Desmond Lindsay Raphael Gladu* Jacob Zanon St. Lucie Walter Rasquin Ross Adolph =#0000FF]Tucker Tharp (looks like he's retired) Zach Rheams José (Miguel) Medina David Miranda Columbia Wagner LaGrange Anthony Dirocie Raul Beracierta Guillermo Granadillo Ranfy Adon

Agreed, but the concern is that none of the three come with the option to hide out in AAA, though if they're all still around on opening day, d'Arnaud can spend the first few weeks on a rehab assignment. So if they're going to carry three of them, at least one better be ready to play elsewhere.

If I were fWAR, I would guess one thing that would suggest a decline would be if he far exceeded my prediction of last year. Also, who knows how they calculate in the injury factor. He had a partially collapsed lung in July of 2017, and suffered a hamstring strain at the top of that season and most relevantly, one more at the end of 2018. Maybe the math doesn't distinguish a strain from a pull, or a partial collapse from a collapse.

When I was a kid, we never heard of a zebra allergy. Now, it's every third kid in the classroom: Ooooh, I'm allergic to zebras! And you wonder why millennials need everything done for them!

Maybe it's just my perspective, but those zebras look awfully small.

After Brandon Nimmo had something of a breakthrough season, going .263 / .404 / .483 // .887 over 535 plate appearances, I was distressed and dismayed while chilling over at FanGraphs to see that Steamer predicts more playing time but a big fallback from him in 2019: .240 / .352 / .397 // .749 over 627 plate appearances. This will obviously be revisited at the time we put up our Notions of Nineteen threads, and .749 is no disaster, but what is Steamer seeing? That's something like a two-win difference in fWAR.

I'm perfectly happy with the notion. The Mets are set up right now to get caught in a three-catcher pinch, so they ought to develop positional flexibility among the catchers and he's the most athletic. Hundley joined the outfield late in a season after spending most of the year on the DL. It was an emergency situation, they had acquired the top catcher in baseball in the interim, and his arm wasn't ready to catch much anyhow. But plenty of Mets catchers quite apart from Hundley have acquitted themselves more or less respectably at other positions on a part-time basis, including the outfield. Gary Carter, Mackey Sasser, Jerry Grote, John Stearns, Álex Treviño, Jason Phillips, Hawk Taylor, Clint Hurdle, etc. Heck, Carter was a star rollout high school quarterback, and even two or three years after he had come up, the Expos still were on the fence about whether to develop him as a catcher or an outfielder. If he's going to play the outfield, it's only going to be after extensive workouts out there, unlike Hundley, who was all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and gave it a longshot try. That said, I think it's just as likely (or more) that d'Arnaud is trade bait, and the Mets figure the market for him is stronger if they play it out like they aren't forced to trade him because they intend to carry him as a catcher/utility player.

Blanco puts one more body between Tim Tebow and the big leagues, which adds up to one. Plus he has a damn good chance to take Kevin Kaczmarski's spot on the big league roster. Until then he joins the club of Gerald Williams and Michael Tucker of outfielders in their late 30s to whom you say, "Really? You'd rather be a AAA Met at this stage in your life than call it a perfectly cromulent career, and just toil in the minors with dudes 15 years younger while you wait for someone to get hurt? OK." Well, coming to the end of the Mesaraco and Bailey deals, the Reds can breathe for the first time in years. For a while, those two and Votto were some ridiculously outsized portion of their payroll.

Ooooh, lookit the Reds! That's got to be the third blockbuster Kemp has been a part of.

Wow, Todd still lives in Toms River? That place is seriously white (like Trump rally-white), isn't it?

If your agent is doing his job, he tells you to pick 10 teams with big markets or big budgets to put on your no-trade list, if you have the juice to get one. They'd be the teams most likely to throw in some extra $$ to get you to waive your rights.
