Gosh, Acuña got some height on that one. It seemed like he was at second before it came down. In retrospect, it wasn't a very fair assignment to leave Ávilan with.

Two out. The Braves should have been stealing home.

I think of him as an Expo, as between him and Bill Gullickson, there was always a good chance we'd catch a 'son in a series against the Expos. But he was a part of that great 1985 Cubs rotation where every one of them was a retread that suddenly all recaptured their magic at the same time. It seemed like the best makeshift cobbled-together rotation I'd ever seen. Lucky punks.

ROSENBOOM!

And I keep thinking he's Jefferson Davis Hogg.

What if the first three guys to bat in an inning were the guys who got the putouts and assists the previous half inning? You'd be bending over backwards, moving your best player to first with two out, or to the outfield if you're facing a flyball hitter. If the catcher wasn't a particularly good hitter, you would encourage him to drop the ball on the third strike so he could throw it to first. If he was an outright bad hitter, you wouldn't want to strike out the last hitter at all, and hope to get him to put it in play instead.

I haven't watched since they instituted the rule holding all pitchers to an eight-pitch limit.

Makes sense, and demonstrates what a dumbass racist I am.

I'm used to the Mets' Dominican closers — children of Benitez all — as being broad across the middle, with big football necks. Diaz seems sly and slender, like a secondbaseman. He seems less like a warrior and more like a thief. Less like a soldier and more like a spy. Less Colossus and more Nightcrawler.

It's funny. Granderson was coming directly from the Yankees AND would start his Met career in a terrible slump, and yet, sure, he was a perfectly familiar and relatable figure from day one.

Canó has Yankee history and PED history working to keep him under suspicion, but also that Samuel/Baerga/Alomar association of veteran All-Star second baseman coming on board to do big things that will never happen. He needs to break that mold.

I'm not particularly comfortable with using the options on young relievers to create a 28-man roster or what have you. I think a guy up from the minors needs more than one or two outings to acclimate. He needs to learn what adjustments he needs to make and make them. Getting a few low-leverage innings and getting shipped out over and over again never allows you that opportunity. That said, Oswalt has been a starter. Maybe if he has a good outing or two, he starts putting pressure on Vargas. Anybody remember what I think was a New York Times Magazine cover story called "Gooden's Golden Season," about this then-almost-unknown teenager in the Mets' system doing the unthinkable, striking out 300 batters at Lynchburg?

How long into a season does it take for a new Met to appear in his new Met uniform, and you think, "Yeah, that guy is totally a Met"? In a year of big turnover, like this one, I can be slower to adapt. Ramos totally feels like a Met, in part, I guess, because so many veteran catchers rotate around the league that they're good at adapting, happy to be where they are, insinuated into the staff and into my subconscious, and I get used to adapting to them. But Diaz, he totally looks like an alien. I still feel a little suspicious about Canó, and I'm not sure that's going to abide any time soon. Davis has had a Met moment and I'm still not 100% there on him. In part, his discomfort on defense has me a little uncomfortable seeing him represent himself as a Met. Like a spy in an American army uniform, trying to act all American and cool as he puts mayonnaise on a hot dog. I think Alonso is probably close to being recognizably Metly, if not completely there. Part of the benefit of coming up with a team (at least in Habituation Quotient terms) is how easy you are with guys in the dugout, even guys like Smith who are competing for you with playing time, because you've played with many of them in the minors and in previous camps. I remember seeing HoJo on opening day in 1985 and thinking, "Who's that weirdo?" I adapted soon enough, but others — Neil Walker, for instance — never stopped looking foreign in a Mets uniform. It's almost like a body-swapping suspense movie. He's playing the position, he's swinging the bat well, he's got the hat, and his stats are going into the record books. All evidence suggests he's a Met, but the dog won't stop barking.

You guys are crazy. I can't think of anything good about that Johnson cover. He doesn't even have a hairy forearm like Shamsky. I have a real bug in my pants about Spring Training shots. They compose these shots as if, "God dammit, here are the METS doing METLY things — you may now stare with wordless awe" ... but they're all shown in fake mesh Mets uniforms in a fake Mets ballpark. Here, Gary and Darryl inexplicably join Dwight on the mound, posing on either side like they're mob collectors about to kneecap him. At least the Sadecki Spot photos featured the players in real Mets uniforms.

>>> "Mr. Markakis? Sgt. Wickers down at the station house. We've found property that matches the description of your missing items in an abandoned SUV about a mile from your home. Guns, cash, watches ... . We'll have to hold it as evidence. But if you come down to the station, you can identify it and we can give you a receipt." >>> >>> "Great, was anything else found with it?" >>> "Well, about $50,000 worth of human growth hormone. I guess these perps were real juicers, huh?" >>> >>> "Um ... yeah."

Vote for McCall's. It does gay better than the gay.

Taking three in a row from the Tampa Tarpons (Shmankee affilliate) has pulled the St. Lucie Mets to a 4-3 record and within a single game of first place in the Florida State League South Division. All in all, it's a four-game winning streak following an 0-3 start, with the turnaround begun by two consecutive shutouts, one against Bradenton and the second in the closing game against Tampa. Kyle Wilson has been the best of the starters as the season opened, throwing 5 2/3 shutout innings in his one start, coming in the pivotal fourth game of the season that turned their bad start around. Kyle the Smyle has already made it far, considering he is a 35th-round pick out of Peculiar, MO. I hope he makes it all the way. Starring out of the pen in the early going is Carlos Hernandez. The big-eared reliever out of (you guessed it) San Pedro de Marcoris, Dominic Republic has thrown 4 1/3 shutout innings over two games, saving one, striking out three and walking nobody. It's early, but it's never too early to say that a 0.23 WHIP is pretty sweet. Did I say "sweet"? What is truly sweet is the start of Blake Tiberi's season. Besides having a name that's just sweet to say, Blurry Tiberi, after opening the season on the bench, has already ensconced himself (yes, I say ensconced) not only into the lineup, but into the leadoff slot. That's what's going to happen when a guy is going a smooth .400 / .500 / .500 // 1.000 through the team's first six games. Blake is a Louisville product, but don't hold that against him. He's alright in my book. Tune in tomorrow at 10:30 AM (yes, you read that right) as the Mets try and complete the difficult four-game sweep against the hated Tarpons. Tony Dibrell toes the rubber for the heroes. Diaz! It gets warm after this one.

Don't be a fart! Vote for Lauren and Art!

Now another dude has the baby, and the two of them are gone. #intrigue

Now he's moved back to sit next to her. Either they were together the whole time or he's a fast worker.

Check out the guy in the front row busting a mack with the unaccompanied lady with a kid behind him.

I think I've figured out all these comebacks. Team gets a big lead, relaxes a little, puts some subs in, makes the pitcher sit during a rally ... all of a sudden everybody's cold. Team that's behind is staying out on the field, jumping around. They're warm. In the late innings, they start chipping away, and whoever comes in for the trailing team on the mound is that much colder. It's a thermal thing.
