Down 3-2 with two out in the bottom of the ninth with no one on base, your Columbia Fireflies rallied last night to blow the minds of the the Hickory Crawdads, and escape with a 4-3 walkoff victory. =#FF0000]Hickory leads, 3-2. Brian Sharp called out on strikes. =#FF0000]One out. Juan Uriarte grounds out sharply, shortstop Chris Seise to first baseman Sherten Apostel. =#FF0000]Two out. Wagner Lagrange singles on a sharp line drive to center fielder Pedro Gonzalez. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Chandler Avant replaces Wagner Lagrange. Anthony Dirocie singles on a sharp line drive to center fielder Pedro Gonzalez. Chandler Avant to 3rd. Bradley Marquez singles on a sharp line drive to center fielder Pedro Gonzalez. Chandler Avant scores. Anthony Dirocie to 3rd. =#FF0000]Game tied, 3-3. Wild pitch by pitcher Scott Engler. Bradley Marquez to 2nd. Scott Engler intentionally walks Ronny Mauricio. Walter Rasquin singles on a sharp ground ball to second baseman Jonathan Ornelas. Anthony Dirocie scores. Bradley Marquez to 3rd. Ronny Mauricio to 2nd. =#FF0000]Columbia wins, 4-3! The fans go crazy, swelling onto the field, the turf gets torn up, mounted police get called in, the mayor calls a curfew, but that doesn't stop the Columbia faithful from marching through the streets with Rasquin on their shoulders, beating drums, blaring horns, banging on trash cans ... . Joy spread across the city like a virus, children filled their diaries with tales of the funnest day ever, reminding themselves that someday they will tell their grandkids of the Walkoff Win over Hickory. That's the way the aftermath went down in my head, anyhow. And for all I know it was true. But the part about the comeback win has certainly been verified, raising the Flies record to 6-4 over the last 10, 7-7 overall, and only one game out of first in the South Atlantic League South Division. It grabs the opener of a three-game set with the Crawdads, who came into the game with a 10-3 record, second-best in the entire league. (The best, by the way, are the Delmarva Shorebirds, currently riding a 10-game winning streak. Not all the news is bad for the Baltimore organization.) You blink and you'll miss it, but one of the coolest things in that late rally was the penultimate play: Hickory walking Ronny Mauricio. Given a chance to choose their poison with the game on the line, The Hicks walked Mauricio — the youngest guy on the team, and possibly the youngest in the league, having just turned 18 a week or two ago. They weren't crazy to do so. Some-People-Call-Me-Mauricio had two four-hit games already this week, and has upped his line to .345 / .390 / .400 // .790. That batting average is good for third in the whole circuit! Did I mention he was just a bebe? And he's a shortstop, too. Yeah, he hasn't walked much, but hopefully that free pass suggests that his hitting will help generate walks. Thomas Szapucki is being brought along real slowly in his return from Tommy John surgery. While he has only gone three innings in his two starts, they've been three shutout innings. Reports say he was getting swings and misses, even though the velocity was only 91-93. The Mets have pulled him back, demoting him to the Brooklyn roster, which effectively means more extended spring training. Hopefully it's just building up arm strength and confidence. Reports say his breaking stuff was all there, however. I suspect that if they can't get him where they want by mid-season, they will be switching him to a relief track. And, you know, when a person talks about relief, it's not long before the name Willy Taveras comes up. Heaven must be missing an angel, because Willie leads the team in innings pitched despite pitching exclusively out of the bullpen. Through 14 1/3 innings, Where There's a Will has a sub 1.00 WHIP and a 1.26 ERA. He has struck out 13 and walked 3. I suspect that Little Willy won't go home anytime soon. But this series against Hickory ... this is the big test of this young season. The team has declared it Copa de Diversión weekend, filling the park with all sorts of things popular amongst our pan-Latin fans, which is guaranteed to be ... at least a little condescending. Dedniel Nuñez toes the rubber tonight, looking to build on his 2-0 record. COUNTRYWIDE. Don't forget that "R." Speaking of which, there's a spelling error on that cover. Terrible copy-editing in journalism isn't just a latter-day thing.

I think Curt Gowdy, Jr. is your man. He's the guy to speak to about programming. https://www.linkedin.com/in/curt-gowdy-jr-99326715/https://www.linkedin.com/in/curt-gowdy-jr-99326715/

He's 19, but probably starts out in the DSL.

I'm all for the respect. But the down side is respect-creep. One guy says you're not allowed to celebrate after jacking a homer. Then next guy over-interprets that unwritten law and demands that you not celebrate as you cross the plate. Or when you get to the dugout. I think that's silly. If you stop and face a guy as you celebrate, you are showing him up. If you pump your fist as you round a base, you're not. If you point to the crowd and encourage them to scream as you reach the bases, you are showing him up. If you accept a high five from your base coach, you are not. If you stop jump on the plate and shake and/or twerk your ass, you are showing him up. If you take a leap to land on the plate to savor the moment you are not. Let's have some nuance here. It's like a moral version of the civil liberties axiom that your right to swing your arm ends at the point that you're hitting my elbow. Your entitlement to show how good you feel ends at the point where it's deliberately directed at me to embarass me and make me feel like shit. Also, while I agree that the stomp (and the flaming arrow) are stupid, when the game ends, the field belongs to the winners. If a guy gets a game-winning hit, or completes a save, he is by definition part of the home team, and the loser's job is to quietly withdraw while the players and fans celebrate the win.

Explains something of the vulnerability of the past week. Mets = Petrie Dish.

=Ceetar post_id=7602 time=1555592935 user_id=102] As a reliever right? I don't know why you'd let him start, nor why Nightengale thinks he's an ace.

A 7-2 St. Lucie victory over the Ft. Myers Miracle featured a Todd Frazier homerun and drove the team's record to 7-3 over their last 10, upping the overall record to 8-6, two games off the pace in the Florida State League South Division, and a nice recovery from the squad's 0-3 start. While starting pitching has been strong, Luc Rennie has been a particular dynamo, working so far with a 2-0 record and a lilliputian 0.82 ERA. A single solo homer marks the only blemish on his record. He goes this evening against Palm Beach at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. I tend to think three starts is where you judge if a guy is genuinely pitching well, vs. just having things work out for a bit, so go, Luc! Use The Force! You've heard about Rylie Gilliam's stellar relief, but Carlos Hernandez is also giving manager Chad Kreuter a second lethal option. Unscored upon in his first seven innings 'Los has given up just four baserunners as yet, on ONE hit, two walks, and plunked batsman. Hernandez is in his fifth year, and reached St. Lucie already last year, so look for him to move up to Bingo if he keeps this up. And any talk about "keeping it up" has to lead to Blake Tiberi. The secondbaseman's strong start has morphed into a strong month, logging 17 hits and walks in his first 50 trips to the plate, including a lead-leading six doubles and 3-for-3 in the bag-swiping department. It all adds up to a mouth watering .386 / .451 / .523 // .974 line, with those ballooning numbers good for third, fifth, sixth and fourth in the league respectively. Sixth in slugging, and he's jet to hit a homer. SWEET! But now the rubber hits the road, literally, as the Mets head out on the road for the next seven days (I suspect Todd Frazier will instead head north to Syracuse), starting with tonight's match in Palm Beach, but with St. Lucie Luc opening the series and the also hot, Columbia-skipping Tommy Wilson to follow, the trip has a good chance of starting off well. Fifty choices is the new max.

I'm still thinking that Keon Broxton's lousy throw on the sac fly for the first run felt like the TPotG. It was a can of corn, but he was playing much deeper than Lagares or even deeper than Nimmo and possibly Conforto. He had to make a running catch whereas Lagares would have had it lined up. Then, rather than turning his hips, setting and throwing, he tossed it in on the run and got nothing behind it. That said, one thing I never realized before this series is that by catcher standards, Realmuto can really motor.

I can expand the polling. I'm not sure "This All" is a thing yet, but that team ERA is a real thing.

Oh, K-on, you should have been sitting on that fastball.

That's a wicked splitter, but it's usually dropping out of the strike zone.

Two runners on. Something a brewin'.

Just as I was thinking that we might remember this trip to Phillie as the series when Alonso fell to earth, he almost undresses Arrieta and (finally) knocks him out of the game. Tying run up in the form of Canó and possibly Conforto. I'm guessing they're going to a lefty.

Smitty is main guy right now.

Good turnaround by Wheeler today. The hitting, not so mucho.

http://cdn.chatsports.com/thumbnails/4179-73085-original.jpeg> I'm gone. A memory. A wisp. I went to Spring Training with the Mets, having spent the last year recovering from Tommy John (what do you think the T.J. stands for?), and at the end of camp, I was set free. But I was there, so I get a thread. It's a rough deal for an infielder to get set loose over a shoulder injury. I don't need to throw 95 on the mound. I just need a good enough arm to throw to first. And hey, I'm a good contact hitter. I may not be a righthanded Jeff McNeil, but then again, I may be. You don't know! Just the notion of that should get me some attention.! But now, here I am three weeks into the season without a new system gobbling me up. Will I be an Omaha Royal? A Red Rock Expresser? Or maybe I'll be a Duck, an Atlantic City Surfer. A Texas AirHog. I would kill it in indy ball. Maybe I go to Japan to be a Hanshin Carp, or to Korea to become a Busan KT Sonicboom. Why not? Or maybe I head back to the Bronx, and coach at my alma mater. No shame there. Or maybe Dilson Herrera and Ruben Tejada get hurt, and the Mets call me back again. I guess I'm not really anticipating that call, but I entertain hopes and that's my right. I don't want to see anybody get hurt, but when I close my eyes, I dream that an opportunity opens up with the Mets, and I crack the lineup, and the next thing you know, I'm hi-fiving a disembodied arm like I'm doing above. I'm T.J. Rivera, and my career is up in the air. Where's it going to land? Maybe you know.

Um, Keon? About that throw ...

But yeah, this is a good day to give Jeff McNeil a game at second and put aside the outfield adventures for a day. Heck, play Smith in left. You know you want to.

SARCOSCOPE certainly got my vote. It's a very eighties look for an early 60s cover. But a lot of 80s design referenced the early sixties after retro nu-wavers like The B-52's rose.
