  1. https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/ryan-orourke.jpg?quality=90&strip=all> Hi, I'm Mets lefthander and famed Vaudevillian master of ethnic comedy, Ryan O'Rourke. You don't know who is going to be your lefty specialist at times. So you pack in a pile of them and tell them they've all got a chance to make the team. A good chance. And we all believe it too. And then we get to our lockers, and look around and suddenly we see a half dozen or more lefthanded journeyman relief pitchers, and we hear rumors of two more getting tryouts. And then we get mad and start treating each other meanly. As if it's the other players fault when a team jerks me around. But when we start piling up, somebody who was hoping to go to Flushing is going to end up in Binghamton, and that's a big fat reality check. Didn't happen to me though. Ávilan and Wilson are lefthanding it with the big club, and me and Zamora started in AAA. Nobody's quite sure what happened to Roseboom, but I think he got left behind in extended spring training, the poor dude. The poor dude who I HATE. Not really, but it's a competitive world. And so I don't exactly celebrate when Luis Ávilan bombs out trying to finish last night's game, I figure, if it's got to be somebody, it might as well be the guy whose job I want. I'm not made of stone. Besides, the Mets won. It's a win-win. Unless you're Ávilan. I'm from Worcester, which produces a lot of hard-living white people, seeing as the jobs mostly left about two/two and half generations ago, but don't make too much of that, as my folks sent me off to the fruity St. John's High School in Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury is the sort of name that almost makes it's population want to beat themselves up. I've got my TJ surgery behind me, missing 2017, and the Twins club had to bear with that, and then I rehabbed back in 2018 with the Orioles. But now I'm over the bump and ready to bring it. I throw from a 2:00 angle (that sidearm shot above is me making a play), which has the lefties bailing out. I pitched to a 1.74 ERA this spring, and stuck around until, like, within a week of the end of camp. Fun fact: In my 54 games with the Twins, I got to appear in every American League park except T-Mobile(?!) in Seattle and Fenway. And the Mets aren't going to Fenway this yeah either. Gahdammit, I wanna pitch in Bahstin! WoostahSTRONG, baby!! So, that's how it adds up: I got a repaired arm, a lefthanded orientation, 54 games of experience, and I'm a step away from The Show. How's it going to roll out?
  2. Yes, a canyon makes every pitcher look better, but it makes guys whose main vulnerability is the deep fly look better still. And they don't make every pitcher look better to the extent that a bandbox makes every hitter look better, but helps lesser hitters improve more than better hitters.
  3. =G-Fafif post_id=6331 time=1554380804 user_id=55]Perhaps it's coming up in a later round, but that Dead End Kids photo appeared to have been culled from a shoot for New York magazine in 1988 when Doc and Darryl appeared on the cover in that pose in advance of the NLCS.
  4. =G-Fafif post_id=6331 time=1554380804 user_id=55]I think it's fair to ask WTF is Alexa?
  5. There's certainly good players to get if your home is a big field. 1) Good pitchers whose main vulnerability is to the deep fly. 2) Fleet-footed Willie McGee-type outfielders, who on defense can cover more real-estate than the opposition, and on offense can hit one into the gap and run forever. 3) Anybody else that's good. The deeper the park, the better. Bandboxes stink. The smaller the park, the more it makes bad hitters look good, without proportionately making good hitters better.
  6. Finding a roster ain't always easy. I've seen a few preliminary ones so far for Binghamton, some with 21 Rumble Ponies, some with 29, so we're not quote there yet. What's new is the Eastern League is switching to a split season format this year, strangely waiting until the dawn of the season to announce it. Also new is Bingolami manager Kevin Boles. Boles seems like quite a coup, having managed 18 years in the minors, including the last nine in the impressively productive Boston system. Mookie Betts, Anthony Rizzo, Miguel Cabrera — these are some of the big shot dudes he helped wean, and if you're like me, you're sure hoping to see Andres Gimenez and Anthony Kay added to that list. Kay will be the Ponies Opening Day starter, having split last season between Columbia and St. Lucie. The Mets are clearly fast-tracking him after three years of college and two years lost to Tommy John. It's only his second pro-season, and he's 24, so you can see why the Mets are putting the gas down a little on the lefty first-rounder from 2016. On a much slower track is knuckleballer Mickey Jannis, returning to Bingo for the fifth straight season. The New York Mets pitching staff is filled with guys who played alongside Jannie back in Bingo, but he's still there and they're all gone. In fact, it's at least the second straight year that the Jannis-headed pitcher has become a free agent only to return to the Mets' system. Adonis Uceta and Ryan Ryder look forward to continuing their career-long bullpen argument over who has the pornier name. I think Ryder wins if we're talking about heteroporn, and Adonis if we mean man-on-man action, but the fight goes on. Stephen Villines, Stephen Nogosek, and Matt Blackham will be other interesting names popping out of that bullpen. Apart from Gimenez, the infield will feature a returning Will Toffey. Some injuries have slowed down the ascent of Toff, but the former hockey player is found money, having arrived from Oakland in the Jeurys Familia deal, and remaining after Familia has returned. A big part of the offseason has been restocking the upper minors with vets to play alongside homebrewed prospects. This is especially true among outfielders, and is exemplified in Syracuse, where Gregory Blanco, Carlos Gomez, and Rajai Davis have arrived to show Tim Tebow what a big leaguer looks like, but it's even more true in Bingo. Five of the six outfielders on the preliminary roster were acquired this offseason, with only 2018 Met Kevin Kaczmarski joining newcomers Barrett Barnes (nephew of Anthony Young), Alfredo Escalera, Jason Krizan (also an infielder), Braxton Lee, and Dario Pizzano on the preliminary roster. The chilly game time tonight will be 6:30 as the Ponies head to New Hampshire, taking on the Blue Jays' prospects, featuring starter Patrick Murphy, coming off a fine season in The Florida State League. I'll get the roster up as soon as it becomes verified.
  7. One of the most revered and classy figures associated with the Mets was radio announcer Bob Murphy. But during the 1986 playoffs in Houston, Darling reveals how the team filed into the clubhouse in the Astrodome before a game to find Murphy passed-out drunk on the trainer's table. He was so sloshed, the team had a meeting around his prone body, as if he was the roast in the middle of a buffet table. Didn't Murphy take some sick leave during the 1986 post-season, and was substituted for on the radio broadcast by Ralph Kiner?
  8. How about that Ben Crenshaw?
  9. https://a57.foxnews.com/a57.foxnews.com/static.foxnews.com/foxnews.com/content/uploads/2019/02/640/320/1862/1048/Brandon-Nimmo.jpg?ve=1&tl=1?ve=1&tl=1 > I walk a lot. I get hit a lot. I strike out a lot a lot. Sometimes I even put the ball in play. I smile a lot. What I've been doing a lot of recently is taking what I say is ball four, and running halfway to first before the ump is all, "Slow down, Son. That was a strike." That's no way to make a living. Plus, my hand feels really crappy right now. I'm Brandon Nimmo, the Mets breakthrough star of 2018. But man, 2019 has been a big turd of a season for me so far. Right now, I'm 2-20 (.100 / .280 / .100 // .380) and that's not getting it done. I've struck out in 13 of those trips to the plate, so I'm not even feeling the pride of putting the ball in play. The pitchers are wasting fewer pitches and the umps are giving a bit of a squeeze to the zone. I'll adjust. That's what got me outa Wyoming or wherever I'm from. Adjusting. In the meantime, I stink like yesterday's fish. But that can't last forever. Something's gotta give. But what something ... and when?
  10. I got no problem with Avilan for two. I think fewer, longer appearances is healthier for a pen than lotso' shorter appearances.
  11. Which Web browser to you use?
  12. That was more than another awesome game by deGrom. That was super-awesome.
  13. Should have gone to Diaz before the tying run came up.
  14. =Fman99 post_id=6289 time=1554338079 user_id=86] I love these damn hitters.
  15. Frayed Knot wrote: And there's another by-product of the shift. Yeah, you never saw the lip of the infield screw up infielders before, because infielders used to play in the infield.
  16. Holy shit, that changeup.
  17. Wow, deGrom is actually throwing better deeper into the game.
  18. Alonso's got some jets!!
  19. No more borderline calls for Nimmo.
  20. Can we give deGrom the 2019 Cy Young now?
  21. Rosario gets the infield flare issue licked.
  22. Marlins camera on Derek Jeter in his private box, as announcers wank themselves to the idea that he'll match Rivera's 100% vote.
  23. Weird fuckup by the infield ends as an E-6. Rosario may have gotten caught deferring to his elder when he needs to take COMMAND. Anyhow, all it did was give deGrom another chance to strike out a guy, and of course he did.
  24. Below we have some late-breaking and overlooked transactions from earlier, as minor league rosters are finalized. Fun Fact #1: Barret Barnes is a nephew of the late Anthony Young. Fun Fact #2: This makes the second (possibly third) straight off-season that Mickey Jannis has had free agency before him and opted to take another minor league deal from the same organization that has had him in AA for-ever. Fun Fact #3: Patrick Biondi becomes the third light-hitting ballhawk centerfielder in the upper minors released by the Mets since Brodie VW took over this offseason, following Champ Stuart, and Matt den Dekker, if you want to count him.
