"All anybody wanted to talk about this year was Nats baseball. That and impeachment."

Everybody's in the sun except the first lady, who has a pall of shadow over her. She looks like she's phasing in from another dimension. I must have misheard him, because I thought the president just thanked Hitler.

Nobody, as far as I can tell, is wearing the RESIGN NOW!!!! shirts I sent them. Marine Band is playing "Baby Shark." I shit you not.

The problem with hiring the most qualified guy you can is that 100% of everybody disagrees on what qualifications a manager should have. Hey, you know who went out on top? Edgardo Alfonzo went out on top.

deGrom, however, doesn't even crack the NL's top 10 pitchers according to ESPN's Cy Young Predictor http://www.espn.com/mlb/features/cyyounghttp://www.espn.com/mlb/features/cyyoung The only possible explanation for deGrom's omission there is that the ESPN tool must be heavily weighted towards a pitcher's W-L record. Yeah, I think the predictor isn't based on who should win, but who has tended to win in the past, so the league leaders in wins and winning percentage get a lot of weight. But the past is the past.

Having won four world championships in the last 15 years, one as recently as a year ago, I'm not sure what Boston's motivation would be to unload their MVP candidates. If you want to steal a superstar from somebody, you'd probably have a better chance of landing Trout.

Reality strikes before the hangovers are done, as Strasburg declines his option and chooses to exercise free agency.

Here's the team born to be creamed. The tournament's equivalent of The Kent State Golden Flashes, or the Washington Generals. I hope they have a few friendlies scheduled, because it'd take a major cataclysmic event to keep them from falling fast and hard to California in Round One. Here is your proud-but-doomed team representing the United States Merchant Marines. Taking the field to the battle cry of Acta non Verba! these players are all current or recent members of the Merchant Marine Academy's baseball squad, and if you go get your reading glasses, you'll see that they aren't all the same person. The propensity at their usual level to enjoy a handful of players who both hit and pitch allows for some flexibility in roster construction, and that's a secret weapon they look forward to deploying. And that sort of versatility is good, because one imagines a parade of pitchers coming and going on the mound. Also, watch out for Rumanian-American twins Brad and Jeff Suciu out of the bullpen. Another desperate strategy they have lined up is to get the two of them warming up at once and blowing the opposition minds. Or perhaps having one come in two innings after the other, forcing California to argue that "Hey, didn't this guy already get removed from the game?!" so vociferously that all or most of them end up getting ejected. Manager Michael Notebaert acknowledges that this strategy may be a stretch, as the photos suggest that, while they may be twinkies, the two brothers aren't identical at all. The last remaining strategy involves prayer, and maybe firearms. Wish them luck. Terry's was probably the best outcome. He got to retire and retain a role in the organization without up and breaking his hip.

Oddly enough, Beltran himself got to go out on top as a player, retiring after winning a championship with the 2017 Astros. But yeah, managers are, by and large, hired to be fired, so "It won't end well" is an easy enough prediction.

Apparently Joe Partykeg still had some controllability left, so surprisingly, rather than hit free agency, he's been outrighted to Syracuse. I guess that effectively makes him the Beltran Era's first big league vet brought in under a minor league contract. Met fans' desire for a flaming hothead as a manager must wait a while longer. Do those still exist any more? Tightly wound, ump-baiting, locker-room spread flipping managers? I would think Girardi is as red ass they come anymore, but Carlos was always a cool, calculating cat. The other thing mook Met fans are going to be reminding you of over the next few weeks is Walter Reed Medical Center.

I believe he does.

dinosaur jesus wrote: One of the many reasons this is an interesting and surprising choice: there are very few successful managers who were star outfielders. The only one in the top fifty in wins is Dusty Baker, at 19th; Frank Robinson is 56th. It's pretty rare, in fact, for stars at any position to make it as managers. I'm curious why the Mets think Beltran can be an exception. Casey Stengel was a borderline star outfielder. OE: I guess I'd put Lupa Nella in that category also.

Terry is the closest thing to a holdover from Beltran's last season with the Mets. If Ruben Tejada stuck last season, he would have brought a taste of 2011, but nope. Where's Brad Emaus?

If he works hard to get in shape, they can activate him in September.

Wow, who'd've thunk it? All respect to Gabe Kapler and Frank Robinson, but I tend to think that former outfielders get even fewer managerial jobs than former pitchers. Beltran would be the first former outfielder to manage the Mets since ... Casey Stengel!! (Interim 1983 manager Frank Howard was also primarily an outfielder.)

Also worth noting that two of the best here exclusively pheature Phillies in the photo illustrations. I voted for one of those (RAIN, PAIN, AND INSANE), but it was only circumspection that kept me from clicking both.

I thought I remembered your love for The Last Dragon. Thank you for reading that far.

I came close to selecting two Newsday covers, and that's deeply against my sensibilities.

That Penguin rally invokes Barry Goldwater's famous quote from his nomination speech: “I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!” Penguin's version is hardly decipherable as Burgess Meredith is trying to sing at a high tempo while clamping his teeth shut on his cigarette holder, but the Interwebs tells me it's: “Extremism in defense of vice! Moderation in pursuit of virtue!” which is pretty good writing despite the fact that almost nobody could understand it the way it was rendered. A take on this motto was also used as a rallying cry for early Mets fans. [FIMG=450]http://www.oldpoliticals.com/ItemImages/000021/30941_lg.jpeg[/FIMG]

If I invoked Shawon Dunston, that was a long time ago, but yeah, I pretty much have understood the name "Cubbage" that way since, like, 1978.

But they did win 116 games in 2001, the most ever. But that was before getting pied by the Yankees in the ALCS, four games to one. Playoffs shmayoffs.
