  1. Speaking rather generally, an awesome MLB team wins 60+% of the time, an awesome NBA team wins 70+% of the time, and an awesome NFL team wins 80+% of the time. So it makes sense that there is going to be more variation and volatility in the final outcomes. There's more volatility baked into the pie.
  2. G/O's statement to The New York Times: They resigned and we're sorry that they couldn't work within this incredibly broad coverage mandate. We're excited about Deadspin's future and we'll have some important updates in the coming days. So, they've apparently hired President Trump as a publicist.
  3. This was surprisingly enlightening. It mostly followed Berry and Smokey, and Berry, who has done some ugly things in his day, seemingly has aged into a genial dude. Smokey was always genial, and the persistence of his green eyes well into his senior years is shocking. Maybe he colors them with lenses. Clearly they're both on their second or third set of beautiful teeth. Some big stars (notably Diana Ross) sat this one out, but they got some real great memories from Mary Wilson, Valerie Simpson, Martha Reeves, Otis Williams, Duke Faqir, and others. Stevie's there too, and even Neil Young — who was briefly on Motown in between The Squires and Buffalo Springfield when he played with Rick James in a Canadian R&B outfit called The Myna Birds. Holland, Dozier, and Holland, who I always thought of as professorial, were actually seemingly regular guys who just flourished under the in-house competitiveness that Gordy intentionally fostered. The film-makers put it together with a cool stylish animation thing of recalling old scenes by using live audio and placing photos of the speakers around the room as their voices played back, making you feel like a fly on the wall of some of these legendary sessions. They skip over some of the darker chapters — only hinting at the power plays by Gordy and Diana Ross that created decades of bad blood. They skip the Jacksons' defection and the tragedy of Tammy Tyrell entirely, but do a pretty good job covering Stevie and Marvin Gaye's personal transformations in the seventies — how it worried Gordy to give them that much creative control, and while it deeply affected the Motown brand, it also gave the world some of the best soul ever. Berry also deserves some extra blame setting the brand adrift by moving the whole operation to LA and breaking off from the roots and the family vibe that made everybody show up to work early and row in the same direction. He was looking to diversify, but I'm still waiting for the guy to produce a good film. Even this doc was made by a British production company. But for a bit there, it really gives you faith that, if the circumstances are right and the vision is strong, a mom-and-pop shop can still conquer the world.
  4. Nats fans have really stepped up their game in this run. Maybe losing Harper made them realize the heel turn never suited them. Philly and he belonged together.
  5. =41Forever post_id=25606 time=1572542148 user_id=69]But it seems to me that if the owners want to have a sports website, and readers are seeking a sports website as a respite from what's in their face everywhere else, then it's not unreasonable to request employees post sports-related stories.
  6. I'm kind of adapting to the Eduardo Peréz thing. Good pinch-hitter. Son of a Hall of Famer. Baseball-lifer even though he didn't have to be. Second-generation manager. Almost single-handedly saved professional baseball in Puerto Rico. Seems ... proactive?
  7. He strikes me as something more than a shithead. There are unrelenting narcissists like Dykstra, and then there are semi-self-aware narcissists like Hamilton, whose narcissism is a thin cover for a deeper (but not so deep) self loathing. He's like President Trump with pro-wrestling-level testosterone and serious addiction issues. The idea of him off the wagon at this stage is terrifying. //armchairshrink
  8. Willets Point wrote: I always conflated Deadspin with Barstool, so I never read it. Apparently, I was way off the mark. Deadspin writers revile Barstool as a safe place for meatheaded misogyny, but it wouldn't be unfair to suggest that they helped paved the way for the latter, in the way envelope-pushing good things often inadvertently (but not necessarily blamelessly) pave the way for hateful bad things in our culture.
  9. GetaLifeAlready.com just got that much bigger.
  10. And congratulations to Bryce Harper, whose goal of bringing a championship to DC was realized.
  11. The last championship in the city of Washington, the last four innings were thrown by Walter Johnson, who got the win out of the pen in the 12th inning.
  12. Of course Druby makes the first out of the ninth.
  13. Do you think they'll all show up at the White House for President Huntsman?
  14. Hey look! It's Joe Smith! That J.J. Putz deal may yet turn out OK for the Mets. #faith
  15. Well, that's likely Rendon's last plate appearance as a National. The Yankees probably already have his uniform measured.
  16. Managers don't compress their staff in critical situations any more, it's true. I don't think Hinch is alone in that. But yeah, it's maddening.
  17. Will Harris: not my idea. I just wanted to make that clear.
  18. Greinke did all that without any more than 90 on his fastball?
  19. Astros strike first!! https://media0.giphy.com/media/PcdnGpgsDeLGo/giphy.gif>
  20. Is Greinke-Scherzer the best Game 7 matchup since 2001?
  21. =G-Fafif post_id=25511 time=1572476981 user_id=55] Fairly played in 21 different seasons, homered for six teams, went deep 215 times overall, yet didn't total 100 homers for any one team. Never hit as many as 20 in a single year nor drive in as many 80 runs in a season. Still seemed solid as hell for a long time.
  22. Ron was probably the most consistent hitter on those highly-successful-but offensively-spotty Koufax/Drysdale Dodger teams of the early-to-mid 60s. Their 1965 team was probably the poorest hitting squad to win a championship going back to the dead-ball era. Drysdale had a better OPS than anybody in the regular starting lineup.
  23. Deadspin has plenty of thoughtfulness to it. It is less snarky and sarcastic than it is frank and profane. To the extent that they are snarky, they're sort of meta-snarky: For instance they open the football season by doing profiles of each team from the perspective of each and every one of them sucking, calling the series WHY YOUR TEAM SUCKS. It has some of my favorite writers in addition to folks I don't care for, and their bullshit meter is almost always calibrated to a level several places past the decimal point. In a world of Stephen A. Smith on TV, and Bill Madden winning a Spink Award, I find them far less foul than a lot of other media I could plug into. The comments section is, well ... it's really hard to find an outlet that puts much energy into curating the comments section. While the quality of Deadspin isn't really the subject here, the challenge of surviving in the digital media age is. I nonetheless can link to multiple stories that will make you weep, quit your job, lose 40 pounds, live in a monastery, change your children's names, dedicate yourself to a life of the mind, and thank the author for all of it.
  24. That's genius.
