Little-observed side effect of the Carlos Beltran appointment: In the great tradition of players coming back to manage the team with which they enjoyed a long and/or successful tenure, he has apparently (at least, if you believe the press greeting), been re-issued 15, the number he played under. This number, of course, had been seemingly mothballed in preparation for the debut of Tim Tebow. As soon as Tebow was signed, you knew Matt Reynolds was a goner. Luis Guillorme grabbed the number for a callup in 2018, but that was just until Asdrubal Cabrera ceded him #13, the most desired number among Venezuelan infielders. So, that left the number in reserve for Tebow from the start of 2019, the year he would have been expected to make his debut, if there was to be one. As is well known, Tebow spent most of the first half of the summer playing terribly, and a good chunk of the second half hurt (for the second year in a row). Not to spend too much time reading tea leaves, but I see Beltran's number assignment as a strong indication that the Tebow experiment may well be winding down.

Well, it's Newsday, and that almost never is consistent with the others. Stupid headline, but I can't argue with that photo, and it got my vote.

I love the nice positive ones this week! Went with "Pete of the Moment," "Rail Splitters" and "Revival Meeting." Thems were great, and I selected one of those, but I was also beguiled by the play-at-the-plate photo illustration that decorated YOU CAN'T LOSE 'EM ALL. The goofy Cardinal baby blues only add to the way the photo hearkened back to a day where, if you could get an unobstructed shot of a play at the plate, you knew you had tomorrow's back pate. I couldn't not click MICKEY MOUTH CLUB also, especially with the vapor coming out of Mickey's mouth.

The league knew what they were doing by laying off of Kimbrel, though. His 2019 was so bad that Edwin Diaz is all, "Man, at least I'm not him."

The funny thing about those predictions is that the only win they predict for the Yankees is re-signing Brett Gardner.

Preach!

While "REIN OF ERROR" is a little too forced, unless we can establish that the guy did indeed fall off a horse. It looks less like a pun and more like a mis-spelling.

No, it isn't. 1. The "consecutive days" thing is an artificial construct. 2. It was instituted under the regime of a manager who has since been dismissed. 3. Even that manager begrudgingly abandoned that rule eventually as the situation forced him to confront grim options. 4. In games when he did pitch on zero days rest, Lugo still pitched effectively, giving up two runs in eight innings. 5. Any injuries that Lugo is recovering from are one more year into the past. 6. Loogie himself spoke on more than one occasion last season, suggesting that he didn't agree with how the team was coddling him. 7. If Diaz is truly a better option, or even one as good, then he is welcome to show his quality in those opportunities where Lugo allegedly can not perform due to having pitched the previous day. 8. Just what could you count on Diaz for on zero days rest, any way? (Looking it up ...) He had a 13.50 ERA in 10 innings over 13 games. Opposing hitters went .404 / .463 / 1.000 // 1.463 against him. Goodness, gracious, he basically turned the whole league into Ted Williams' better-hitting younger brother in such situations. So no, it isn't particularly simple at all. And to the extent that it may be considered simple, it's simple in the opposite way, I think, from what you are suggesting.

Is there any reason to be so disappointed with Seth Lugo that you want to announce he's lost his job on paper in November> If Diaz wins the job back, great. If Familia finds himself and shows his best self, better. Not declaring somebody has "won" the job helps Mets win games. You want to be a closer? Pitch like one. It's not complicated.

Frayed Knot wrote: I wouldn't have called that (the 1st base interference). If the ball hits him a stride or two earlier then, yes. But in his final stride where else is he supposed to be? It turns out that that your question is addressed in the rule book, and you would have been right not to call that. 5.09 Making an Out (a) Retiring the Batter A batter is out when: (11) In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three-foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, and in the umpire's judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base, in which case the ball is dead; except that he may run outside (to the right of) the three-foot line or inside (to the left of) the foul line to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball; Rule 5.09(a)(11) Comment: The lines marking the three-foot lane are a part of that lane and a batter-runner is required to have both feet within the three-foot lane or on the lines marking the lane. The batter-runner is permitted to exit the threefoot lane by means of a step, stride, reach or slide in the immediate vicinity of first base for the sole purpose of touching first base.

Yeah, I think, more than being Rule V-eligible, he was in a position to become a minor league free agent if not added to the roster. There have been a lot of Blakes and a lot of Taylors through the system in recent years, so it was easy to lose track of him.

But, lest it go unsaid, the Neyer/James formula wasn't created to fairly designate somebody as the very best, but to predict the winner based on voting patterns of yesteryear. I think it's clear that since that book was published 15 years ago, voting patterns have changed meaningfully.

So, Gonsalves probably comes in behind such figures as Chris Mazza, Drew Gagnon, Walker Lockett, Chris Flexen, and Corey Oswalt on the starter depth chart — and maybe even Harol Gonzalez and David Peterson. But much of is a byproduct of missing most of last season with an elbow injury — officially termed a "stress reaction." If he comes to camp and shows he's healthy, he could be very much in the picture. Before the injury, he had killed it at almost every minor league level, chalking up a 2.50 ERA in 612 minor league innings. My shortlist of potential Met Gold Glove candidates would include (surprisingly) Alonso, as well as Matz and deGrom at pitcher. But when the numbers are crunched, I don't think any of them would be particularly close to winning.

=Centerfield post_id=26028 time=1572969487 user_id=65]More on who he looks down on. I don't think he ever thinks about it too deeply. I think he splits people into two categories. People who like him, and people who don't. I think if he had ever been really accepted by the NY elite, we wouldn't have this right wing conspiracy theorist. But the NY elite didn't accept him. Probably because they felt he was too stupid to get their respect. So he kept talking, and tweeting, and eventually he found an audience that adored him in the deep red states. And here we are.

I'm thinking that one day, technology will advance so that the equivalent of StatCast data can be extracted from digitized game films and videotapes. Maybe not in my lifetime, but I'm sure somebody somewhere is working on it today.

He's the Joe Morgan of firstbasemen. So committed to the old school values that he doesn't even realize how much smarter and better he played than the old school values would have appreciated. So dumb, he doesn't know how smart he is.

The weird part is that Keith himself tends to consider Garvey to be the better candidate. This is, of course, nuts.

Blake Taylor did too well in the Arizona Fall League, and pitched his way into Rule V vulnerability.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: I guess the nice thing about the Mets not having won a championship during the Trump presidency is that we haven't had to learn which of our guys would wear a MAGA cap. I have another way of looking at it. It's a good thing that the Mets haven't won a championship during the Trump presidency, because then they'd go to the White House and shake his hand, and everything the president touches turns to shit.

Other no-shows included Anthony Rendon, Victor Robles and Joe Ross. And yes, I can totally get behind a SIGN RENDON, ROBLES, AND ROSS NOW!!!! campaign. And yeah, I know only one of them is technically a free agent, but sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do.

Nats fans have generally dismayed me. I blamed the worst of the Phillies fans who, during the Phillies run, traveled frequently to DC, and gave a lousy example to a not-yet-established fan base in how to be an asshole frontrunner. Nats fans have really showed me a lot the last few months. The Nats themselves — both the organization and the players — are a group I still can't get behind.

I like that the "Today's Game" ballot includes Marvin Miller, who is 102 years old and dead.

A least one. Sean Doolittle. A https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/11/01/sean-doolittle-declining-white-house-invite-i-dont-want-hang-out-with-somebody-who-talks-like-that/conscientious no-show. And yes, I'm all behind a SIGN DOOLITTLE NOW!!!! campaign.

He pronounced Asdrubal as "Astro-ball."
