  1. [fimg=390:3dyidzab]http://venividivici.us/sites/default/files/John-belushi-animal-house.jpeg[/fimg:3dyidzab] Final one of the year - and obviously a biggie as the idea is to get this thing clinched before ever getting back. Itinerary: Cincy for four. Day off Monday. Philly for three. Meanwhile the Nats have the extra game remaining (11 games to our 10). They do one more with Baltimore (at 4 this afternoon), then host Philly for three, have a one-game make-up with the Reds on our off-day Monday, then go to Atlanta for three. Obviously taking five of seven gets us there and should be quite doable. 4-3 clinches a tie even if the Nats manage to run the table. And even 3-4, as disturbing as that would be given the competition, would force them to go 7-1 in order to make the final series meaningful (read: cringe-worthy.).
  2. How likely is it that he was "sending a message," Look, I had just tuned in when this happened so I'm not going to claim to have had my finger on the pulse the entire time. But it was a 3-2 count when he hit him so that's not a set-up for the put-away pitch coming up. And it was the second one that AB separated only by a slider away. It was also 2-out/none-on so perhaps he feels like he can put Machado on AND take some flesh with him without putting his team in too much danger. And do remember that we're not exactly dealing with the sharpest razor in the barber shop here; probably figured that hitting him is better than pitching around him. I was also taking my cue from the O's announcers (not Gary Thorne who usually does their games) who seem to have no doubt it was intentional although they certainly could have a bias on the topic. The ump also obviously thought so immediately and Machado himself did as well.
  3. Well, we can look at it this way: - It was a really bad home-stand where our lead went from 9.5 games down to 6.5 ... - on the other hand, the magic number dropped from 11 to 5 over that same span and the NHOP, the pct of remaining games that need to go our way, dropped from around 29% to below 22% The advantage to building a big lead is that you still have [u:1vrftzis]A[/u:1vrftzis] lead remaining even after you suck for a spell.

Just caught the replay on MLB... it seemed like a really questionable ejection. Except that Machado had hit the game-changing HR his previous AB and the HBP was the second in a row that was headed near his noggin. Taken by itself it's certainly questionable. Add it all up and maybe not. Now the question is why Papelbon is allowed to stay on the bench after being tossed?!?

  7. Blue Jays wind up taking two of three in this series -- lead by 3.5

  10. Headed to the 9th in Washington. 4-3 Orioles. 3R HR by Russell Martin makes it 4-0 Blue Jays over the Yanx in the 8th These are what pass for good news tonight.

Yogi's big 'return' was right around the time he and his family were getting that museum thing going in Jersey and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if part of that deal involved George making a fat "contribution" to the project.
  12. Three Braves walks and I believe all three were on 4-pitches. Two led off innings and one was with 1 out following a POS infield single.
  13. It increasingly looks like if we're going to win this we're going to have to back into it.
  14. I REALLY wish we'd make them actually earn their runs.
  15. On to Yogi the player for a minute: -- 7 consecutive seasons Top-4 in MVP. From 1950 at age 24: 3rd, 1st, 4th, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 2nd And, sure, the team he played on and his personality could have given him a leg up on other players who maybe were as deserving, but still -- 19 years, 414 career strike-outs (or, as it's known to some guys these days, about a season and a half). I know times and the game have changed and all, but that's an average of right around 28 for a 500 AB season and he topped out at just 38 (at age 34 in 472 ABs)
  16. I'm just hoping that those who write pieces over the next few days that are sure to say how much Yogi liked and was liked by everyone also remember the one guy who mistreated him badly enough to make Yogi refuse to talk to him or even mention his name for years when they think about writing their 'Steinbrenner for HoF' columns.
  17. Tough to figure Reed [lather rinse and repeat for just about all relievers] He was a 'Certified Closer' for two seasons with the White Sox [29 & 40 Saves] and then one w/Arizona (32 Saves) but maintained ERAs of around 4.00 during those years with WHiPs that were kind of ordinary as well. Not that those numbers tell-all with a closer but overall he seemed kind of average-ish at best. Early this year he blew a few saves and by May they had taken his closer's ID card away from him and his K, BB, & HR numbers were all going the wrong way - although you figure that maybe the HRs are connected to the park. He'll be merely arg-eligible this winter meaning that, with Clippard a FA, Mejia out of the picture, and Parnell iffy at best, he's at least a decent bet to think about for set-up man next year.
  18. Harvey - 4.0 Cuddyer - 1.0 Campbell - 0.5
  19. Gilmartin - 1.0 Parnell - 0.5 Granderson - 0.5 Murphy - 0.5
  20. Matz - 3.5 Robles - 0.5 Reed - 0.5 Familia - 0.3 Duda - 1.5 Uribe - 1.4 Murphy - 1.9 Wright - 0.4
  21. And this is why you build big leads, to be able to absorb the inevitable speed bumps along the way.
  22. And they're going to extras in Toronto. Jays left bases-loaded in both the 8th & 9th, but the Yanx had a runner thrown out at the plate in top-9 so they're going at it both ways here [cue FMan joke here]
  23. Dioneer Navarro (one time MFY farmhand) HR's off Andrew Miller to tie the game w/one out in the 9th in Toronto. [crossout:2nkq8s75]First[/crossout:2nkq8s75] HR allowed by Miller this season. Actually 4th HR by Miller. Note to self: don't take the initial word from overly-excited Blue Jays announcers
  24. All Braves runs with two outs tonight.
  25. Would I be mistaken if I opined that on missed strike threes they seem to reach vs us a lot more than the other way around? I'm thinking we're about negative-15 or so this season on those.
