  1. The O's did everything they could to lose that game but weren't able to. They handed the Nats 6 walks plus 3 errors and dropped/missed two catchable pop-ups (one fair, one foul) in the 9th inning alone.

That's most likely a product of the photographer using a wide angle lens, probably 24mm or 28mm in Ed's picture, thereby exaggerating the size of anything closer to the camera. That's what Anthony Weiner was looking to do as well.
  4. Yeah, it's not the number of the inning that's the problem, it's that small things seem to turn into big things and that one big inning -- whichever one it is -- is enough to ruin an otherwise good day for him. Last night it certainly looked like it would be the 3rd after his 8 straight groundouts were followed by an inexplicable 4-pitch/2-out walk to a sub-.100 hitting pitcher. That was then followed by a ground single by Bourn which was different than all the previous grounders only in that it became a 'tweener', and then by the error by Flores at which point Freeman is suddenly up with the bases loaded even though none of the first 12 batters hit the ball even remotely hard. That Freddie's knuckling liner to CF found Cespedes's glove was as fortunate as the previous three batters had been unfortunate but that hasn't been the way things have gone for Niese lately.

  6. So did any one of the scribes or mics come up with an explanation of WTF was going through Murphy's head last night, besides the usual cool breeze of course? Or, for that matter, what was the rush to get Niese out of there?
  7. So far we've scored a total of 3 runs off this Wisler guy over 2 games/14 innings - and one of those came via a balk. It seems to be the rest of the league that smacks him around to the tune of an ERA around 6.00 Be a nice idea of several someones decide to get their hittin' shoes on tonight rather than hoping that Verrett will continue to throw out dominating spot-starts on demand (2 ER, 7 Hits over 13 IP in 2 Starts)
  8. Colon - 2.5 Wright - 1.0 Robles - 1.0
  9. Wright - 1.0 Conforto - 1.0 Granderson - 1.0 Goeddel - 0.5 Parnell - 0.75 Stauffer - 0.25

He hasn't been the same since Stony Brook alum Tom Koehler drilled him in the hip. Perhaps there's an injury there that he's been getting over. I don't think it's a coincidence that he went 0-19 after being drilled... I do.

  12. Price's relievers trying hard to blow his game for him. At 4-0 heading into the 8th, Price was gone and the Yanx promptly got a run in and 2-on, tying run at the plate and still no one out. But Brett Cecil K'd Gardner, ARod, then McCann to end the threat.
  13. cooby wrote: Guys, it's a rare occasion that I can watch or listen to a game. But I am aware that they are farming out innings for Matt Harvey. Is there a reason why? Basically because he has yet to pitch a full Major League season, going from 10 starts as a rookie in 2012, to 26 starts/178 innings in 2013 before his injury, then no pitching at all in 2014, and now is attempting to go start to finish for the first time ever. It's is generally thought that it's not so much the number of innings thrown but also the increase over and above what he's thrown in the past, trying not to exceed the previous max by too much at once. That this is his first season after recovering from the ligament transfer makes everyone even more cautious. Then there are other factors such as it not being handled very delicately by his agent while Harvey himself tries to play all sides of the fence by not publicly disagreeing with said agent, or team mgmt, or the fans, or destroying the tough-guy image he's adopted over the years.
  14. I think that was the first ground ball we've ever hit past Andreton Simmons.
  15. Zvon wrote: Then Reed leads off the inning at the plate. But of course he won't, which means the second outing in a row for him that's not only 1-2-3 but on 7 pitches.
  16. So now all we need four different pitchers to all have good nights in the same game.
  17. Price & the Jays leading the Yanx 3-0 in the 5th. But with this pitching matchup (Adam Warren for NYY) this was essentially Toronto's 'Gimme' game anyway so they should be putting it away. Should the Yanx manage to 'steal' this one it would really throw that division up for grabs. The big series for this week is Angels @ Astros A lopsided loss for either one of those might knock them out of post-season.
  18. Re: what G K & R are discussing -- There's a quote floating out there somewhere about the new generation of players playing only for money, etc. It was spoken by Ty Cobb in the '20s. Which isn't to say that the topic they're discussing is meaningless, but the idea that the attitude just changed with the present crop is as old as the game itself.
  19. Lefty Specialist wrote: They should be up about 5-0 in this game, and Niese just had the 'narrow escape' inning which often precedes his 'meltdown' inning. 5 hits including a 2B & HR plus 3 BBs in 4 innings should equal more than just 2 runs. But two outs on the base paths and, once again, only one hit w/RiSP and even that one didn't score a run.
  20. Our NHOP for clinching prior to the final series is up to .400 -- aka: 8 of the 20 games prior to the final weekend need to go our way in order to make that series meaningless.

  22. Nats hosting Baltimore for three while we're busy with Atlanta. Tough to figure out the Birds this year. Mostly hanging around .500 (3 games under for the year, 10-8 in Sept) and no chance of repeating last season's surprise division winner. Mostly their pitching has let them down and the Nats are hitting right now. One can only hope that Buck and his boys manage to steal at least a game or two because after that it's a steady diet of Braves (3), Reds (1) and Phils (3) for the Washingtonians en route to the final series and it's smelling like they could run that table with a minimal number of breaks.
  23. Just a reminder that this is a [u:9ram1tgt]ONE HIT[/u:9ram1tgt] inning for the Yanx.

  25. I'm tired of even discussing Harvey - especially when the bats are 1-for-14 w/RiSP this series (the 1st inning Wright 2B). Not sure which is worse, the one hit part or the fact that we've only had 14 ABs w/RiSP over 25 innings.
