  1. Yeah, finger numbness is often the warning sign for this sort of thing, so either JF just woke up with it today and realized was more than simply sleeping on his hand or he's had a mild case of it for a while and decided to fess up now after it grew worse. He's slated to see Harvey T.O.S. guy in St Louis tomorrow.
  2. The other mystery here is what triggered this diagnosis. Despite the bad outing yesterday, Familia claimed afterward, "I feel great, my arm feels great" and just said that his command was off. Ackert's first article (NYDN) on this claims that the Mets had been "privately worried about" Familia and quotes some unnamed scout saying how "disinterested" and lousy he's looked this year - but much of that sounds like nothing more than after-the-fact justification. Prior to yesterday he had given up just 1 hit and no walks in his previous five innings/outings, something which is kind of tough to do when you suck and don't care. Something either was being hidden or just cropped up over night.

  4. Sandy has countered with the argument that while Vegas is further away it's a lot easier to get flights in and out of there compared to just about any other AAA city so you gain some of that time back as while the flight may be longer the wait's often shorter. But of course he has to put a good spin on it. The biggest problem is that there are eight "western" (Mountain or Pacific time zones) ML teams but nine western AAA teams so some eastern squad is always going to get stuck with their top affiliate most of the way across the country. Norfolk/Tidewater left for Baltimore because the Tides owner also owned several other Baltimore affiliates (an owner can own multiple teams as long as they're not at the same level) and wanted the advantage of dealing with just one team that his 'vertical' alignment allowed. There was some talk at the time that the Mets hadn't been "servicing" the Tides well enough (with the usual Jeff W. implications) but, even if true, that likely played no factor. Buffalo essentially did the same thing with Toronto, their closest ML city, plus it didn't help that the Bisons weren't very good during their four-year NYM association and attendance was down. So when that happened only western sites remained available and the Mets found themselves as that one eastern squad without a chair when the music stopped. IIRC, At the time the Mets linked up with Buffalo there was talk of them opting for Syracuse instead but they liked the stadium in Buffalo better and would opt for Syracuse only if the Wilpon's could buy at least a partial ownership of the team (and presumably fix or replace the stadium, etc). But that was around the time of the economic crash and Madoff so those plans, however serious they were, went away quickly. I believe only the Braves own their AAA affiliate. Deals for minor league affiliates are up only at the end of even numbered years so the Mets are committed to LV thru at least 2018 although I'm not sure if the new agreement they signed at the end of 2016 was for two years or four.
  5. It was only a matter of time ... [fimg=450:bva4vn1c]http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.3154855.1494475524!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/article_1200/fan.jpg[/fimg:bva4vn1c] South Florida, a hot babe as someone's "guest" in the prime seats dying for attention, TV cameras on and pointed. The full show was about a 3 or 4 second long 'dance'. My only surprise is that it took this long.
  6. Who's Adam Wilk? Was he once a Met?
  7. I too was against using Familia on Tuesday because I thought it had the potential for going wrong on us if he had a lengthy outing. But he didn't which is why I'm not buying the idea that the reason he couldn't find the plate today [26 pitches - 12 strikes] was on account of him being gassed from the grand total of the 22 competitive pitches that he's thrown over the previous eight days. He simply sucked today (as did Wilmer, as did the bats) and I'm afraid we've fallen into the habit of blaming Terry each and every time any one of the relievers has a bad outing.
  8. I'm not buying this "bullpen mismanagement" angle folks. Despite all the other problems -- leaving 2 runners on in the 6th, 7th, & 8th, then one more in the 9th, Wilmer turning four outs into one, etc. -- we wound up in the 9th inning with a lead and the closer in the game. That he then proceeded to serve up two walks plus three hits (including a bases clearing double to a 21 y/o rookie) while getting a grand total of ONE out isn't the manager's fault, nor am I buying that this was all caused by the ten pitches he threw last night or the 22 he's thrown since Friday.
  9. Wilmer should have been on 3rd. I hope THAT doesn't come back to bite us.
  10. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Yeah Flores isn;t a good fielder Two balls hit to him today: runner on 1st/1 out, and 1st & 3rd / 1 out and with a chance to get four outs he got one. And one of those potential Das would have ended the game.
  11. I always keep in mind that the 'Based on Actual Events' claim doesn't remotely mean you'll be viewing actual events. But in a lot of ways I'm more OK when writers take what I'll call 'macro' liberties with the facts than I am with many of the more micro liberties that show up in films. So that when Aaron Sorkin totally conjures up Mark Zuckerberg inventing Facebook as a reaction to getting tossed over by his date it didn't bother me even though I knew it wasn't true because he was merely setting the basis for a story about creating Facebook. Which brings us to this movie where I accept that the macro story was true but then sat through a bunch of the scenes within it thinking that many of them just didn't ring true; the cop scene early on; the crowbar to the bathroom sign; John Glenn on the phone minutes before his liftoff asking for her calculations personally. Yeah, not buyin' it. I mean it certainly wasn't a bad movie. But I did fear it would be a little too cutesy going in and that turned out to be pretty much on target.

  13. Flores goes for the out at home instead of the DP try. The good news is that it gets Cain out of the game. The bad news is that if PH Morse comes through here the Flores decision is going to look like a real bad move. .... and Salas K's Morse!!
  14. [u:2is2wvlr]Carlos Beltran HRs off of Bartolo Colon[/u:2is2wvlr] 1) 6/29/2000 Beltran for KC, the 27th HR of his career. Colon with Cleveland, 59th allowed in career 2) 5/10/2001 same teams. 32nd HR for Beltran, 76th for BC 3) 6/30/2001 4) 6/30/2001 first one in the 2nd inning, then again in the 4th. 39th & 40th career for Beltran // 88th & 90th for Big Bart -------- 16 year gap ------- 5) 5/9/2017 in Houston last night. #424 for, 387th against Heard some stat about it being the longest gap between same batter/same pitcher HRs "in the expansion era" - or words to that effect.
  15. I suspect Terry's answer might be something along the lines of, with a day off on Thursday, that if JF is not needed in Wednesday's game he could wind going from Friday (the 5th) thru at least this coming Friday with the five pitches he threw on Tuesday as his only work. Either that or he was leery about bringing a struggling Montero into a game where he faces Posey right off the bat, but when the worst that can happen there is just a solo HR that one doesn't fly with me.
  16. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Maybe I'm not following. Is there another way to label the anonymous source(s) that would, in your view, enhance the credibility of the story? Or is your beef the fact that the sources are anonymous and no re-lableing would fix that beef? I don't object to the concept of using anonymous sources but, between the vagueness of phrase "baseball sources" (players?, front office?, fans?, clubhouse boy?, Keith Law?, the ghost of Ty Cobb?) and the leap that just because whatever person they got this 'info' from is in some form connected to baseball that it gives him knowledge of Matt Harvey's personal life, this conveys the notion that this is Page Six getting out of a story what they set out to get in the first place which is of course that the big gossip story du jour has a connection to some hot babe. It reminds me a bit of a scene from BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES where the writer -- fictional, but not coincidentally from the NY Post -- sets out to pump up his story of a teenager getting hit by a high-end car by getting a teacher at the kid's school to first define 'Honor Student' as anyone who showed up regularly and didn't piss on him, and then to get a quote about how the kid never actually pissed on him, as enough license to trumpet 'HONOR STUDENT' in the paper's headline. As I said earlier, this story may well be true but it, like the BotV scene, has a ring to it about going as far as you need in order to find enough 'evidence' that will allow you to write what you set out to write before you started and, call me crazy, but I don't put that past the standards of journalism at the Post's Page Six crew. The Daily News, btw, runs a similar story today and they at least went as far to call it a "Mets source" which certainly narrows things down a bit.
  17. batmagadanleadoff wrote: But why would the phrase "baseball sources" hurt the credibility of the story Because it's so vague that it could mean practically anything, and because the phrase alone offers nothing as far as being up on the inside dirt of Matt Harvey's personal life.
  18. Any word yet on rescheduling? Officially: "A later date" They considered rescheduling it to an earlier date but, for some reason, logistics got in the way of that plan. June 10th, a Saturday game originally sked as a 4:10 start, is now a "split" DH
  19. The story may very well be true but "baseball sources" could be anything from a teammate or front office guy, to someone in a different organization or just some fan who claims to know something. Hell, Paul LoDuca has been all over everywhere since this story broke, claiming to have the inside word on this and the facts on that, and I had no idea he was in any way actually still connected to a sport that didn't involve betting on horses and chasing underage girls, and yet he could be the "baseball source" on this one.
  20. Not to denigrate the fine reporting history and taut journalism that 'Page Six' has long represented, but forgive me if I question the validity of phrases like: Lima “really messed with Matt Harvey’s head,” [u:2da0ba3l]baseball sources[/u:2da0ba3l] said. Baseball sources ... Really?!?
  21. Mets win, climb back to .500 Nats blow a 9th inning lead then lose in 12 (Mark Trumbo game-winning single) Looks like Muffy got hisself ejected in the 10th, not clear over what exactly Marlins led 5-1 until Cards score 4 in the 8th to tie then notched the winner in the 9th in Miami Phils also blow a lead (led Seattle 9-5 after 4) and lost in the 9th Bartolo gave up 5 to the Astros in the 1st as Braves lose 8-3 And the freakin' Yanx finally had their winning streak busted in Cincy That makes this like a Sex-tuple Happiness Night!!!! (continuing with the dildo theme)
  22. Oooooh, and just as we get the last out, the Orioles push across two with two outs in the 9th to tie the Nats.
  23. Edgy MD wrote: Sheesh. Montero is a big league pitcher and stuff. Trust him with a five-run lead. Yeah, I don't particularly like this one.
  24. MFS62 wrote: Two pitchers in the eighth? Of THIS game? Is Terry trying for some kind of Tony LaRussa Award? Terry used three pitchers in the 8th; there were two in-inning changes
  25. Adam Lind, whose ran into the final out of last night's game in Baltimore, just hit a 3R 8th inning HR for the Nats to break a 1-1 tie
