1. Verlander no-hits the Blue Jays, the 3rd no-no of his career (none of them perfect). The only runs in the 2-0 win came via a 2R HR in the top of the 9th for Houston. Kate's husband is now the 6th pitcher with more than two career no-hitters. Who are they? Glad you asked: Bob Feller, Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, Cy Young, and Larry Corcoran (played 1880-1887)
2. Wright passed Gooden years ago - after the 2013 season if I'm adding up the numbers correctly. And, just as in David's pursuit of Straw's all-time NYM HR record, it was widely assumed here that it was only a matter of when, not if, he would catch and pass GTS for the top of this list too. But unlike the HR race, he never really came close in this one. Two more good seasons after 2013, or even three above average ones, would have had him knocking on the door. But instead, we judged him to be the 11th best Met of '14 and the 15th best in '15 before his back-of-the-pack points in 2016 (24th best Met) were the last ones he'd get.
3. Tall third-basemen are a good thing. Matz deserved better. After the Harper HR he got burned on three shit hits: Error - Bloop - Bloop
4. Now 5-2 with 12 outs left to get. We should be up in this game by a lot more than we are.
5. The whole 'bat control/bunt' guy as the second hitter dates to the time when teams typically had two or three hitters in their lineup that simply weren't very good, or at least were in little danger of taking a pitcher out of the park. So you'd stick your 'contact guy' into the #2 slot so as to minimize Ks, execute hit-and-runs, hit behind the runner, and all other sorts of outcomes which were 'productive outs' at worst and singles w/the runner in motion if you were lucky which was often the best upside you could hope for from a 165-lb middle infielder. The philosophy changed--too slowly in many cases but habits die hard--both because the stats revolution showed that the upside was never as good as folks thought it was and because those wiry 165-lb glove men now lift weights and clock in at 220 and are capable of taking even good pitchers out of the park to the opposite field.
6. Hoskins getting run brought the Philly bench down to three players, and then the double-switch during the pitching change notched it down to two ... and with four-plus innings still to go. The pitcher's batting slot leads off the 5th inning here (K is your result) but was Kapler really convinced that it's worth getting a second inning of what we just saw from Blake Parker?
7. =Elster88 post_id=20413 time=1567217962 user_id=118] Cano to start a rehab stint soon. Not sure how many more games the minor leaguers even have at this point. Maybe the Mets will still be in the hunt when Cano gets back.
8. Can we save some of these runs and apply them to games played earlier in the week?

Not being able to get the ball out of the infield tends to negate that effect somewhat. Frazier read your post. So did Conforto. I'd guess that neither of those gets out of Dodger Stadium. And so did Frazier.
10. A 10-pitch inning for Diaz. Ten pitches was the first batter total for him -- whether he retired the hitter or not -- for much of this season.
11. Philly pitching needed to face 21 NYM plate appearances in order to get the first 18 outs. It then took them 15 PA to get the next six.
12. Take Three (Rosario): FINALLY!!!!!!!

14. And it's RiSP time again (JD Davis) ... AND IT'S ANOTHER FUCKIN' POP-UP!!!!
15. And it's RiSP time again ... AND IT'S ANOTHER FUCKIN' POP-UP!!!!
16. And the recent RiSP numbers go down even further. With two on base (Rosario's AB) and then later with three on: a pop-out, line-out, and pop-out were sandwiched around Ramos's single.
17. Always fun when you IW a guy to load the bases and get to their pitcher because you KNOW that they're not going to PH for him ... and then get out of the inning because of it and THEN have that pitcher not last the next half inning (got just one out). And that's got to be at least the third time in this hitting streak that Ramos has extended it only after entering late game.

19. Well, Darvish was struggling coming into this week's series ... and we got one run off of him Lester was struggling even more than Darvish ... and we got one run off of him Nola is decidedly NOT struggling coming into this series ... so maybe we'll kick the shit out of him. That's really poor logic, but it's all I got. Except that Harper is having a hot August (which still just brings his season up to mediocre by his standards), that Mikael Franco is in the minors at the present time (and you could look it up), and that Rhys Hoskins mostly isn't hitting [.138/.327/.276 in August ... that's a LOT of friggin' walks] AND he can't field no matter where they put him.
20. Make that seven outs (w/the error thrown in) on about ten pitches.
21. Tough to make any noise when the last five outs we've made have come on like six pitches - which is especially difficult considering that there were two strikeouts in there.
22. We're doing the LOB thing and the non-support of deGrom thing again.
23. Wilson Ramos just can't be slowed down ... because he's so slow already
