Or are the Orioles really that hapless? The odd part is that they got mostly good pitching this past week [0 R / 4 H; 1 R / 4 H; 7 R / 11 H] despite having several of their better pitchers missing due to Covid. They did it by using 4, 5, and 5 pitchers in those games (iow, almost as many pitchers as hits allowed) w/only two guys going longer than 3 innings (including the guy who gave up most of the runs). On the other hand it was Baltimore and the Marlins won those games by 1, 1, and 1 run

  3. Ahh yes, the "Horace Clarke Yankees". From the inception of WFAN in the mid/late '80s through the early parts of their 1990's WS run, YLDB's saying that they were fans "from back in the Horace Clarke days" was their version of claiming to be a 'long suffering' MFY fan and/or a badge of honor to differentiate themselves from the mid-'90s bandwagon jumpers.. I often wondered how HC felt about being tagged as the poster child for the only era in the memories of many fans when the team sukked.
  4. It would be considered good for a pitcher with 80 pitches under his belt to be through the first out in the 6th (or 17 outs). Porcello is through 7 full (21 outs).
  5. That was the Mets 11th GiDP of this season. At the start of the day, only SFG had more (12) and that includes both leagues. Given that we're tops in the NL in OBA (behind only Houston) and yet below average in RS/G, I'm sure this surprises no one.
  6. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=42937 time=1596669919 user_id=68] What happened to Scherzer?
  7. I was almost happy to see Ramos strike out in that situation [2 on/ none out / Top 4] because, right before that pitch, I suddenly had visions of him grounding into a triple play.
  8. I guess having your manager opt to not PH for Tomas Nido but then does PH for you an inning or two later more or less serves as the DFA equivalent of writing on the wall. I remember picking Cordell out during ST (the original one) as a player to watch. Still not sure I wouldn't prefer him to Billy Hamilton but I admit that's largely speculative.

  10. Frayed Knot wrote: That was an ugly looking injury. And whatever it turns out to be, a calf/achilles injury to a pitcher, particularly on his push-off leg, figures to be a long one. Mike Soroka is done for the season -- torn achilles. That's certainly what it looked like. He made just a slight and quite innocent looking bounce on his right leg as he turned to cover 1st -- something every pitcher has done a thousand times -- but just as he did you saw the calf/ankle kind of quiver and about a half second later he was on the ground.
  11. As Dennis the Menace almost never said: Thank you Mr. Wilson.
  12. And don't get me wrong, I'm still nervous here. But this pen protecting a 5-run lead with [CROSSOUT]9[/CROSSOUT] now 8 outs to go is a helluva lot better than with only a 3 or 4 run lead and the books not yet closed on the 6th.

  14. Considering that, given the quality of his ABs lately, he might have swung at maybe half of those 12 balls ... it progress.
  15. I'm declaring this, the bottom of the 6th, to be an official 'Big Inning' in this game. If Jake gets through cleanly I'm going to feel good about it from here on in. But if we have to go to the pen before the next three outs and protect a shrinking lead with three-plus innings left then I'm going to officially have nervous.
  16. Jeter is denying that rumor ... but, then again, he has a vested interest in having that idea squelched.
  17. Remind me again why we allowed an uncontested SB?
  18. Well, four is better than three ... I just hope we're not going regret not getting more in the next hour or two.
  19. Having said all that, I think recent events have told us that this is NOT the time to take your foot off the gas. Get as many of the three runners on across the dish to add to the three already in.
  20. That was an ugly looking injury. And whatever it turns out to be, a calf/achilles injury to a pitcher, particularly on his push-off leg, figures to be a long one.
  21. Covid concerns AND playing time/bonus concerns could Both be true ... it doesn't need to be either/or
  22. * Except that now I gotta start out with an edit here since I started this thread prior to them scoring tonight in the 3rd. So this should all read through the 2nd inning tonight ... Over their last 23 innings -- beginning with the frame after upping their lead to 10-5 in the 6th inning on Friday [and going through Monday's 2nd inning] -- the NYM 'Noffense' has scored just one run - This despite having 35 base runners during that span - In only four of those 23 innings were they retired 1-2-3 - they had one baserunner in a frame six times - they had two baserunners eight times - they had the bases loaded three different times ... which included the one time they scored, btw that came via a Sac Fly, not a hit. - So think about that for a second: having two or three runners on base was more common than none or one (11 to 10). That's unusual even when you're scoring often! - There were 11 ABs with a runner on 3rd during this span with, obviously, only one of them scoring. Five of those 11 ABs came with <2 outs, six others after two were down There are probably some more (ugly) factoids I could dig up about this stretch ... but for now the good thing about all this is that since this suckitude ended while I was creating this thread, I'm going to claim credit for ending the drought.
  23. Shohei Ohtani to the DL for "arm discomfort".
  24. Now five HRs in five games for Judge. 6-6 after six for Yanx/Sawx
  25. And now follow up stories indicate that Ces was upset over not being in the starting lineup and that his decision to opt out over "corona virus concerns" may actually have a bunch to do with the idea that not playing everyday will hurt his odds of reaching various performance bonus levels.
